Swoo Pay partners with Mastercard to target Southeast Asian market

Netherlands-based mobile wallet Swoo Pay has joined forces with global financial giant Mastercard to target the Southeast Asian market, offering crypto cashback on everyday purchases.

 

Crypto loyalty tokens

The partnership was announced via a press release published on Cointelegraph earlier this week. Through Swoo's platform, users stand to gain crypto rewards, specifically Swoo Loyalty Tokens, for each contactless payment made via the app using digitized Mastercard cards.

 

The partnership marks yet another step forward in the convergence of traditional financial systems with the burgeoning world of cryptocurrency. It reflects a broader trend among major financial institutions and retailers, who increasingly view cryptocurrency integration as a means to revitalize loyalty programs.

 

Once users accrue “Tokenback” in the form of Swoo Loyalty Tokens, they have the flexibility to either exchange their rewards for popular cryptocurrencies like USDT or BTC within the Swoo app or convert them into fiat currency through partnering services. As Swoo continues to refine its crypto rewards platform, it will incorporate more Web3 features, further enhancing the utility and value of loyalty tokens within its ecosystem.

Targeting emerging markets

Swoo Pay is targeting emerging markets. Alongside Southeast Asia, that also brings the Middle East region and Africa within the scope of its marketing efforts for this product offering. Emerging markets have long been seen as ideal markets within which to bring about crypto adoption more generally.

 

The significance of this announcement wasn’t lost on Nicki Sanders, chief technology officer (CTO) with tokenized real estate enterprise, Realio. Taking to social media, Sanders cited crypto adoption as one of three main reasons as to why this partnership could be a game-changer.  

 

Sanders feels that the nature of the offering will result in crypto adoption as daily crypto use will be boosted. In turn, that will bring digital currencies into the realm of mainstream acceptability.

She also feels that the product offering will be significant in terms of financial inclusion as it’s very accessible to underserved communities. Additionally, Sanders identifies the inherent innovation as being likely to result in mass adoption. “Focusing on Android and Huawei users, Swoo Pay navigates around Google service sanctions, offering a fresh pathway to digital payments,” she claims.

This partnership builds upon the success of a previous trial campaign dubbed “Super Tokenback with Mastercard.” During the three-week initiative, users enjoyed 5% Tokenback (crypto cashback) on all Mastercard purchases made through Swoo Pay. The results were positive, with over 17,000 participants conducting upwards of 128,000 transactions. Not only did this drive increase card spend, but it also introduced a wave of new consumers to the concept of crypto-backed rewards.

 

Representatives from Swoo emphasize the seamless integration of crypto into mainstream markets, ensuring compliance with local regulations and simplifying the launch and scalability of marketing campaigns to attract new users.

 

Conversely, officials from Mastercard underscore the company's commitment to expanding the possibilities of digital payment instruments, prioritizing convenience, technological advancement and security. They highlight the role of Swoo Pay in addressing issues with tokenized payments for Android device users, thereby broadening accessibility to these innovative financial solutions.

Remarkably, these transactions propelled China to become Binance’s largest market, accounting for a massive 20% of global trading volume, excluding trades by a subset of major traders.Almost one million active Chinese usersDespite the supposed ban, Binance’s internal discussions highlight the pivotal role China still plays for the exchange. Current and former employees indicate that Binance’s investigations team collaborates closely with Chinese law enforcement. This partnership aims to identify potential criminal activities among the 900,000+ active users in China, underscoring Binance’s efforts to maintain oversight.However, Binance now faces regulatory challenges tied to its secretive global operations. In June, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against Binance and its Founder, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), alleging illegal operations and misuse of customer funds.Meanwhile, the Justice Department is conducting its own investigation. A report by Semafor on Wednesday suggests that authorities are considering fraud charges but they’re concerned that such an eventuality may lead to a run on the exchange. This regulatory onslaught has seen Binance’s market share among US users plummet, leading to a reduction of over 1,000 jobs out of its 8,000-strong workforce.Circumventing regulationThe clandestine existence of Binance’s footprint in China offers insights into the exchange’s ability to function surreptitiously in unwelcoming environments. To circumvent restrictions, Binance directed Chinese users to visit local websites with domain names before rerouting them to the global exchange. This tactic allowed Binance to keep a foothold in China, even after the government blocked direct access to its website in 2017.China’s central bank, responsible for imposing the crypto ban, remained silent when questioned about these developments. Binance’s official stance is that its website is blocked in China and inaccessible to users there.Holding on to its China-based users is crucial for Binance as it navigates a treacherous regulatory landscape that threatens its future. The company’s history with China is intricate. CZ established the firm in Shanghai in 2017, only for the government to initiate a series of regulatory attacks on crypto exchanges soon after. This led to concerns about money being illicitly moved out of the country, and Zhao eventually relocated Binance’s operations to Japan.Despite this move, Binance retained a significant workforce in China, a decision that raised concerns among its US arm regarding data control. Binance’s Chinese heritage also attracted attention, with Zhao addressing the company’s challenge of being labeled both a “criminal entity” in China and a “Chinese company” in the West.Binance’s relationship with China remains complex. As the exchange navigates these murky waters, its ability to operate under the radar and maintain its foothold in markets like China will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining its future trajectory.

Polaris Office marks 10th anniversary, POLA rises 14%

South Korea-based document management software firm Polaris Office announced the 10th anniversary of its office software (SW) cloud service launch, according to local media News1. Reaching this milestone has coincided with the rising price of its native token, POLA. At the time of writing, POLA is trading at KRW 48.89 ($0.04), up 13.99% from the previous week.  The 10th anniversary of its service launch appears to be a direct cause behind this recent rise in POLA prices, despite the recent downturn in the crypto market. This growth is attributed to the increased adoption of hybrid work environments.  By consolidated standards, Polaris Office recorded KRW 107.9 billion in sales, KRW 6.2 billion in operating profit and KRW 24.4 billion in net profit, marking YoY increase of 346.1%, 277.1% and 91.2%, respectively.  Joining government-led document AI projectMeanwhile, Polaris Office has been designated as a participatory company in the "SW Computing Industry Source Technology Development Project" led by the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea, as reported by crypto media CoinNess on April 15. In this project, Polaris Office is expected to contribute to advancing the document AI technology.

TZ APAC strikes marketing partnership to drive Tezos gaming

In the past, gaming giant Ubisoft has leaned on Tezos in providing in-game items for some of its gaming titles. The project has partnered with Google Cloud in an effort to enable Google Cloud customers to build Web3 applications on the blockchain. It’s still early days for Web3 gaming and with that, this partnership is seeking to advance gaming development on Tezos.
