Recognition of Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 6 has led to many crypto proponents in Asia foreseeing a positive outcome for crypto within the Asian region, and globally.

Bright future for crypto

According to a report published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), crypto proponents in China are expectant of a bright future for crypto both on the Chinese mainland and in Hong Kong. The mindset seems to be that a pro-crypto stance in the U.S. will lead to other jurisdictions taking a similar approach. HashKey CEO Livio Weng expressed such a view, stating:

“Trump’s pro-crypto stance is expected not only to invigorate the US virtual-asset industry, but also to encourage Hong Kong to further relax its own virtual-asset policies in its quest to become a global Web3 hub.”

Prior to being elected, Trump had promised to fire Gary Gensler, who as Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has pursued a strategy of regulation by enforcement, a course of action that has been broadly criticized by crypto market participants in the United States. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse wasted no time in calling on Trump to act, and to fire Gensler.

Influencing regulatory attitudes

There seems to be a consensus among commentators that the regulatory approach to crypto in the U.S. is going to become crypto-friendly. Crypto analyst Miles Deutscher suggests that “a Trump victory is a WIN for US tech innovation, as it would solidify [the United States’] status as a crypto powerhouse.”

Weng believes that “this shift could also positively influence regulatory attitudes toward virtual assets in mainland China.” That view is mirrored in South Korea by KP Jang, head of Xangle Research. Jang asserts that “if Trump implements bold virtual asset policies while improving existing regulations, it is expected to accelerate regulatory reforms in Korea as well.”

Sumit Gupta, CEO and co-founder of India’s largest crypto exchange, CoinDCX, outlined on X that Trump’s victory is a pivotal moment for global crypto, adding:

”The direct effects of Trump’s policies might not alter India’s regulatory environment right away. However, global sentiment and investor behaviour will be influenced, eventually reaching India.”

The CoinDCX CEO believes that should Trump now appoint regulatory leadership that’s crypto-positive, any resultant crypto regulatory framework adopted by the U.S. could become a blueprint for use by other nations.

Gupta identified further potential upside insofar as the implementation of positive crypto policies by Trump would lead to a more attractive environment for crypto, “potentially opening up enhanced funding opportunities and partnerships for Indian startups as investors seek global growth.”

Bitcoin price surge

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin unit price is up 0.64% over the course of the past 24 hours, at $74,884. American business news channel CNBC reported that Bitcoin could reach $100,000 before Trump even takes office.

Matthew Hougan, chief investment officer (CIO) at crypto asset fund manager Bitwise, said that Trump’s election victory could herald in a “golden age of crypto,” with a friendlier regulatory environment leading to greater institutional investment and mainstream adoption.

Worldcoin launches in Singapore post India hiatus

Digital identity and financial network Worldcoin, the cryptocurrency project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has revealed its expansion into Singapore.Photo by Meriç Dağlı on UnsplashFive Orb-scanning locationsFollowing the successful launch of World ID 2.0 and the open-sourcing of the Worldcoin iris recognition pipeline in mid-December, the project now offers World ID verifications in Singapore through the Orb, its custom hardware device. The product launch in the Southeast Asian city-state comes hot on the heels of Worldcoin pausing its activities in India. According to a blog post published by the project on Wednesday, Singaporeans can now avail themselves of World ID verifications at five locations through the Orb, the iris-scanning device that forms a crucial part of the project's identity verification process. Adding to its presence in Singapore, Tools for Humanity (TFH), a Berlin-headquartered project contributor and the lead developer behind Worldcoin, has become a member of two prestigious startup and tech associations in Singapore: ACCESS and the Singapore Fintech Association (SFA). Through these associations the project’s developers are seeking to further embed Worldcoin within the region's technology ecosystem. Expanding global footprintExpanding its global footprint, World ID verifications are not limited to Singapore alone. The project has also extended its services to Seville and Bilbao in Spain. Moreover, in South America, World ID verifications in Chile have expanded to Concepcion, Curico and Viña del Mar, joining Santiago. Meanwhile, Argentina achieved a notable milestone, setting a national record with over 10,000 verifications in a single day. In Japan, Fukuoka on Kyushu Island now joins new locations in Tokyo for proof of personhood verification via World ID. Earlier in December, Worldcoin introduced World ID 2.0, an upgrade that builds upon its existing "proof of personhood" protocol. This upgrade introduces "Apps, Levels, and a series of core improvements" to the protocol launched earlier in the year. The accompanying apps enable World ID integration with various services, including Reddit, Discord and Shopify. Market challengesIt's worth noting that despite these positive steps being taken to expand the Worldcoin global footprint, the company has faced challenges in certain markets also. It emerged in recent days that it has temporarily halted its services in India, France and Brazil. Despite the temporary pause, World App continues to gain popularity in India, where thousands download the app each week. The Worldcoin Foundation explained that Orb-verified proof of personhood services has been scaled back temporarily as they work on developing a safe and orderly process to meet the increasing demand for World ID in India. Sources close to Worldcoin suggest a relaunch in India is anticipated in 2024. Despite its expansion, Worldcoin has faced criticism since its launch. Reports from August indicated that German regulators had been scrutinizing the project since 2022, while French officials raised concerns about the legality of collecting biometric data. The authorities in Kenya suspended the activities of Worldcoin within the country a few months ago, pending a review by public agencies in respect of security and data protection. Earlier this month, Tiago Sada, head of product for Tools for Humanity, tried to allay privacy concerns on the basis of the product’s anonymity. Sada stated:“You can use it completely anonymously; the only thing you’re doing is proving you’re unique.”

Leveraging the power of blockchain technology, the notes were tokenized on the Ethereum blockchain. UBS announced the milestone development via a press release published to its website on Friday. The Swiss banking giant has some expertise in this area, having first issued a tokenized fixed rate note in December 2022, recorded on a permissioned blockchain and established under English and Swiss law. On this occasion, the Hong Kong-issued tokenized notes will be compliant in terms of both Swiss and Hong Kong law.The issuance of these tokenized notes involved a significant amount, with BOCI issuing 200 million Chinese yuan worth of notes, equivalent to approximately $28 million. The collaboration with UBS aims to simplify digital asset markets and products for customers in the Asia Pacific region, specifically by developing blockchain-based digital structured products tailored to their needs.Ying Wang, Deputy CEO at BOCI, expressed enthusiasm for the digital transformation and innovative development of Hong Kong’s financial industry, recognizing the evolving digital economy in the region. Wang expressed the view that the development puts BOCI “at the forefront of innovation in technology finance and digital finance.”She sees the UBS collaboration as a means of driving “the simplification of digital asset markets and products, for customers in Asia Pacific through the development of blockchain-based digital structured products, designed specifically for customers in Asia Pacific.”Embracing digital assetsHong Kong has been actively working towards establishing itself as a hub for cryptocurrencies. Paul Chan Mo-po, the Chinese autonomous territory’s Financial Secretary, has emphasized the region’s intention to embrace regulation in this domain. Despite recent fluctuations in the virtual asset market and the closure of certain virtual asset exchanges, Chan remains optimistic about the prospects of Web3 and believes it is the opportune moment to drive its advancement. This month, Hong Kong lifted its ban on crypto retail trading and encouraged crypto exchanges to seek licenses within the region. The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has introduced exchange guidelines, leading firms such as Huobi, OKX, and BitMEX to express their intentions to apply for licenses in Hong Kong. Furthermore, in light of the recent lawsuit filed by the SEC against Coinbase, Hong Kong legislator Johnny Ng extended an invitation to the exchange to establish a hub in Hong Kong. The collaboration between BOCI and UBS is significant as unlike UBS’ previous tokenized note project which was established on a permissioned blockchain, this Hong Kong-based project is making use of Ethereum. By issuing tokenized notes on the Ethereum blockchain, these institutions are exploring the decentralized potential of digital assets and paving the way for further innovation in the Asia Pacific region.
