Planetarium Labs opens pre-registration for Nine Chronicles M

Web3 gaming company Planetarium Labs is set to release Nine Chronicles M, the mobile version of its popular game Nine Chronicles, on Nov. 22 at 2 a.m. UTC, accompanied by a global pre-registration event that will run from now until Nov. 21.

Nine Chronicle M is a fully on-chain open-source massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) — the first of its kind — set against the backdrop of Norse mythology. The PC version of the game has been in development since 2020 and has consistently topped the ranks of dapp store DappRadar’s blockchain game listings with more than 200,000 users worldwide.

 

Bringing Web3 to gamers worldwide

“Through this mobile release, users will be able to enjoy Nine Chronicles anywhere at any time,” said Kim Jae-seok, CEO of Planetarium Labs. “We expect to introduce the Web3 experience with an approach that is familiar even to ordinary gamers who are not familiar with blockchain technology by supporting in-app purchases on Google Play and Apple’s App Store.”

The pre-registration event will be open to participants all over the world in regions like East Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe. Participants will be eligible to receive various rewards, including up to 10,000 units of the in-game currency Nine Chronicles Gold (NCG), which can be used to purchase in-game items or staked to earn additional rewards. The event will also offer diverse benefits to attract a larger user base through activities such as the Gacha Workshop, which when unlocked presents free rewards like NCG and rare costumes.

To overcome the currency exchange-related roadblocks that tend to stand in the way when releasing Web3 games in Korea, Nine Chronicle M’s Korean release will exclude the bridge function that moves NCG to the Ethereum network.

 

High hopes

“Nine Chronicles M can play a crucial role in promoting widespread Web3 adoption and is expected to grow as one of the representative games in the idle RPG genre,” said Alan Lau, Chief Business Officer of Animoca Brands, a blockchain firm that invested $32 million in Planetarium Labs during their Series A funding round.

The network launch signifies the latest in a series of attempts by various layer-2 projects, including Polygon and StarkWare, to address the persistent challenges of high transaction fees and network congestion that have hindered Ethereum’s usability in recent times. Speaking to layer-2 development, co-founder Sandy Peng stated:“We see a future where the vast majority of value transfer takes place on Layer 2s on Ethereum. What will drive that adoption is improved user and developer experience.”After testing and refinement on its testnet, Scroll believes that it is in a good position to play an active role within the Ethereum ecosystem by providing a general-purpose, zero-knowledge Ethereum virtual machine (zkEVM) roll-up.The project has 900,000 wallet addresses in active use on its testnet, having executed seven million transactions since August. The testnet has seen over 55 million transactions during its year-long operation.At its core, Scroll’s mission is to combine Ethereum’s network security with reduced fees and lower latency, making it an attractive proposition for existing Ethereum projects. According to Peng, Ethereum developers can seamlessly deploy their projects on Scroll and harness the groundbreaking zkEVM technology.Incorporating bytecodePeng emphasized the significance of zkEVM’s ability to batch proofs efficiently, resulting in faster transaction speeds and cost reductions, thanks to its bytecode-level compatibility.Bytecode, in the realm of computer programming, simplifies intricate machine cryptography, making code more accessible for computer hardware. Scroll allows deployed smart contracts to store the bytecode of their transactions, which is then sent to a centralized zkEVM node. This node verifies the transaction’s accuracy without revealing its content. Once verified, the transaction’s status is updated on the Ethereum network, eliminating the need for re-execution. Peng pointed out:“Thanks to this feature, Ethereum devs can leverage all the same tools they are familiar with, ensuring that everything operates seamlessly right from the start.”Scroll’s mainnet code was subject to audits conducted by four major auditing firms, namely Zellic, Trail of Bits, OpenZeppelin, and KALOS, in an effort to ensure robust security and reliability.Efforts towards greater decentralizationWhile Scroll’s current implementation offers compelling features, the team is actively researching ways to further enhance the network’s decentralization. Currently, if the sequencer goes offline, the protocol halts, creating a potential vulnerability. To address this, the Scroll team is working on a protocol upgrade that will enable “forced batches.” This update will allow permissionless publication of batches through the base layer, even in the event of a sequencer halt.Peng elaborated on the team’s vision, stating: “Mid-term, the goal is to minimize the probability of a sequencer halt through decentralization.” This approach aims to bolster the network’s resilience and ensure a smoother user experience.While headquartered in the Seychelles, the project has its origins in China through its Chinese founders, Ye Zhang and Haichen Shen, alongside Peng, with many of its 60-strong project team based in mainland China and Hong Kong.

South Korean Job Seekers to Benefit from Digital Badges for License CredentialsSouth Korean job seekers will soon be able to enjoy the convenience of proving their license credentials with digital badges based on non-fungible tokens (NFTs).The South Korean Ministry of Employment and Labor has announced that its affiliate, the Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRDK), plans to create a mobile application that supports virtual asset wallets. Decentralized identifiers (DIDs) based on blockchain technology will prevent forgery and counterfeiting and improve personal information protection. The incorporation of gaming elements within NFTs is expected to motivate citizens to engage in continuous learning.Chosen as this year’s state-led blockchain initiative last December, the digital badge project is supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA). HRDK aims to complete the transformation of its 18.5 million issued licenses into digital badges by the end of this year. The project also involves digitizing vocational training certificates issued by the Korea Employment Information Services (KEIS), which has an average annual issuance of 3.6 million certificates. Access to these badges will also be facilitated through not only state-managed mobile ID wallets but also private platform wallets.In the context of employment and career management, individuals have traditionally received paper certificates and had to deliver them to relevant organizations. This process often involved inconvenience, as it required in-person visits, mailing, or scanning. Moreover, individuals faced the hassle of repeatedly obtaining the same certificate due to expiration dates and storage concerns.Seamless certificate managementWith the introduction of the digital badge service, users will be able to download a mobile application on their smart devices. This app will enable them to access their national certificates, allowing them to view their qualification and training completion information at any time. Additionally, users will gain the convenience of instantly submitting or verifying their certificates remotely through their mobile devices whenever necessary.HRDK will further enhance its services through strategic partnerships with credentialing organizations from both the public and private sectors.Kim Young-joong, the Acting President of HRDK, emphasized the significance of national licenses and training certificates as objective measures of individuals’ performance and skills, underscoring their importance in the employment landscape. He further expressed HRDK’s commitment to ensuring customer satisfaction by leveraging cutting-edge technology and efficient data management practices to drive innovation in public services.
