4% of staff moving to Singapore

In an interview with Bloomberg last week, Wintermute Co-Founder Yoann Turpin said he will move from London, where the company is currently headquartered, to Singapore in the coming months. Additionally, approximately 4% of the company’s workforce, which currently comprises around 85 staff members, will also relocate to the city-state, where Wintermute conducts its derivatives business.

At the time of publication, the company was also actively recruiting for an open position in the city-state. In further publicizing Wintermute’s developing presence in Singapore, Turpin took to social media recently to invite people to meet Wintermute’s Singapore-based team in September at Token 2049 Singapore. Evgeny Gaevoy, Wintermute Co-Founder and CEO, is scheduled to appear as a speaker at the event.

Turpin emphasized the company’s focus on Asia and highlighted the significance of having a co-founder based in the region to drive the business forward. The move comes as the crypto industry faces the aftermath of a crackdown in the United States, triggered by bankruptcies at platforms like FTX and Celsius Network.

Exploring global opportunities

In response, crypto businesses are exploring opportunities in Asian markets, with countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates vying to attract companies while ensuring robust regulatory frameworks in the wake of the market turbulence in 2022.

Although tokens like Bitcoin and Ether have partially recovered from the crash experienced last year, spot digital-asset trading volumes and volatility have remained low, indicating reduced investor engagement. That said, demand for crypto futures and options has proven to be more resilient.

Possible Dubai expansion

Wintermute established an office in Singapore in 2021, adding to its existing base in London. Turpin also confirmed to Bloomberg that the company is weighing up the possibility of establishing a third office in Dubai as part of its expansion plans. Dubai, like Singapore and Hong Kong, has been actively trying to attract crypto businesses over the course of the past twelve months.

During the 2021 crypto bull market, the company reported trading volume worth $1.5 trillion and generated $1.05 billion in revenue. However, the market maker also faced challenges during the market turmoil, including exposure to around $55 million of assets on FTX. Moreover, in September of the same year, Wintermute experienced a hack that resulted in a loss of about $160 million from its decentralized finance operations.

Despite the hurdles faced in 2022, Turpin expressed confidence in the company’s resilience and stated that they do not have immediate plans to raise funds. The company just celebrated six years in business, and has executed 8.4 million OTC trades over the course of the past twelve months.

By relocating key personnel and expanding its presence in Singapore and possibly Dubai, the company aims to strengthen its foothold in the Asian market and navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Metaplanet aims for 10K Bitcoin stockpile

Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company listed on the Tokyo stock exchange, is targeting a holding of 10,000 BTC in 2025.2025 targetTaking to the X social media platform on Jan. 5, the company’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, set out a number of objectives which the company will strive to reach in 2025. Among them is the objective to expand the company’s Bitcoin holdings to 10,000 BTC. Gerovich said that the expansion of the firm’s Bitcoin holding would be achieved “by utilizing the most accretive capital market tools available to us.” He followed up on Jan. 6 with an announcement that Metaplanet has completed its 12th series stock acquisition rights. Gerovich claimed that the successful completion of the stock issuance marked “a milestone in Metaplanet’s financing and Bitcoin acquisition strategy.” The 12th series stock issuance was first announced back in November, with a six-month exercise period opening on Dec. 17. Additionally, the company issued 4.5 billion yen ($28,562,451) and 5 billion yen ($31,736,057) in ordinary bonds, with a maturity date of June 2025. Other objectives the company has set out for 2025 include enhancing transparency and shareholder engagement through new initiatives. Furthermore, Metaplanet intends to leverage its partnerships to advance Bitcoin adoption in Japan and further afield. Gerovich said that Metaplanet will explore innovative opportunities to grow the firm’s impact in Japan and within the Bitcoin ecosystem.Photo by Vasilis Chatzopoulos on Unsplash2024 ‘transformational’The Metaplanet CEO claimed that 2024 had been “transformational” for the company. He added: “We broke records, expanded our Bitcoin treasury, and reinforced our position as Asia’s leading Bitcoin Treasury Company.” Shifting its attention to 2025, the firm is focused on its efforts to drive greater value for shareholders. Metaplanet’s fortunes are now heavily dependent upon the performance of Bitcoin. In an interview at a New Year’s Eve party held in Miami by Microstrategy founder Michael Saylor, Gerovich commented on Bitcoin adoption, stating:"I’m slowly but surely seeing Bitcoin becoming a topic of discussion at the highest levels of government. Corporations around the world are beginning to adopt it as a Bitcoin standard." The Metaplanet CEO is optimistic that the U.S. will adopt a strategic Bitcoin reserve once the Trump administration commences. Should that happen, he believes that other countries will follow. He sees Japan as one of those countries where they do look to the U.S. as a guide on such matters. “So I think if President Trump does adopt it as a strategic reserve, then Japan and many countries in Asia will do the same,” he stated. Metaplanet is understood to be pursuing a business model very similar to the one pioneered by Microstrategy in the United States. The company increased the rate at which it acquired Bitcoin in H2 2024. Metaplanet made its first Bitcoin purchase in April 2024. At that time, its stock was trading at $1.90. Just as the Bitcoin unit price surged, so too did Metaplanet stock, closing the year at $22.05 per share.

Ripple Expands in Asia-Pacific with Full License to Operate in Singapore

Ripple Expands in Asia-Pacific with Full License to Operate in SingaporeEnterprise blockchain firm Ripple announced on Wednesday (UTC) that it has secured a full license to operate in Singapore, where it has established its Asia-Pacific headquarters since 2017.Photo by Sergio Sala on UnsplashFrom outline to full approval in 4 monthsThis development marks another step in Ripple’s strategic expansion within the Asia-Pacific region, known for its rapidly growing cryptocurrency market. Ripple’s journey to obtaining this full license began less than four months ago when the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) granted it an initial in-principle approval in June. With the newly acquired full license, Ripple is now authorized to offer regulated cryptocurrency payment services in Singapore, a key financial hub in the region.Brad Garlinghouse, the CEO of Ripple, expressed his enthusiasm for the company’s continued growth in Singapore, stating:“We have hired exceptional talent and local leadership, doubling headcount over the past year and plan to continue growing our presence in a progressive jurisdiction like Singapore.”Global expansion strategyThe company also highlighted the fact that over 90% of Ripple’s business occurs outside the United States, making the Asia-Pacific region, and Singapore in particular, a vital part of its global expansion strategy.Monica Long, President of Ripple, explained in a recent interview with CNBC that the Singapore office has seen substantial growth in the past year due to the booming business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region. This expansion aligns with Singapore’s leadership in crypto regulation in the region. The introduction of the Payment Services Act, which has been in effect since January 2020, has played a large part in that, regulating payment services and crypto services to the public.Singapore’s regulatory framework also includes requirements for crypto service providers to safeguard customer assets in statutory trusts by the end of 2023 and restrictions on facilitating lending or staking of retail customers’ assets. These measures ensure consumer protection and responsible growth in the crypto industry.Praising SingaporeGarlinghouse commended Singapore’s regulatory approach, stating, “Under MAS’ leadership, Singapore has developed into one of the leading fintech and digital asset hubs, striking the balance between innovation, consumer protection and responsible growth.” Ripple’s experience in Singapore differs entirely from the ongoing legal battle it has found itself in in the United States with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).Both Ripple and Coinbase have found themselves embroiled in lawsuits with the regulator in the US. In Ripple’s case, the firm and its founders have been accused of unlawfully selling their native cryptocurrency XRP without registering it with the SEC. However, a landmark ruling in July determined that XRP, as a token, may not necessarily be classified as a security.Long spoke to the contrasting experiences the firm has encountered between the United States and Singapore. Long stated:”Being in Singapore a couple weeks ago felt like night and day compared to the US in terms of open dialogue with regulators, and thus being able to build innovative *and* compliant products.”Ripple, along with Coinbase and several other crypto firms, has criticized the lack of regulatory clarity in the US and has even considered relocating operations due to the SEC’s stringent regulatory stance. Notably, Coinbase also recently announced its successful acquisition of a major payment institution license in Singapore, following its in-principle approval obtained about a year ago.
