Animoca founder: $200T crypto market within 10 years

Markets·May 31, 2024, 7:30 AM

The global cryptocurrency market is poised for unprecedented growth, potentially reaching $200 trillion within a decade, according to Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, a prominent Hong Kong-based Web3 game software company and venture capital firm.

2-3x within 18 months

Currently valued at approximately $2.7 trillion according to data from crypto aggregator CoinGecko, the cryptocurrency market is set to double or triple in the near term, Siu predicted on The Valr Podcast on May 28. “In the near term — within 12 to 18 months — we can conceive of a doubling or tripling of the space,” he stated, expressing strong confidence in the industry's future milestones.

Siu elaborated on his bold forecast, suggesting that over a five to ten-year period, the market could accelerate by 100 to 200 times, potentially reaching a valuation of $200 trillion or even higher. In conversation with Farzam Ehsani, the co-founder of Valr, a platform that allows users to buy, sell, store and transfer crypto assets, Siu said:

“I think we could reach that kind of number within a decade.”

This explosive growth, according to Siu, will be driven by billions of people becoming digital property owners within the Web3 ecosystem. Siu stated:

“It is entirely conceivable that we’re going to have a billion property owners because we’re going to have a billion token holders. This is not possible in the physical world.”

Asia fastest growing market

Siu also pointed out the regional dynamics within the Web3 space, noting that Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing market. “Right now, the leading force in Web3 is clearly Asia,” he argued, citing robust adoption rates in regions such as Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Japan. In contrast, jurisdictions like the United States are lagging behind, primarily due to regulatory uncertainties.

Siu pointed out that historically, the United States has tended to take a leadership role where new technology is concerned. Web3 is turning out to be the exception to that rule. With that, he thinks that it is Asia that will lead the way and that it will continue to lead for the foreseeable future where Web3 is concerned.

Bullish on Bitcoin

His optimism about the Web3 market's potential aligns with his bullish stance on Bitcoin, currently standing at a market capitalization of $1.3 trillion. Siu made another bold prediction recently, expressing confidence that Bitcoin would eventually reach $1 million. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $68,346. While that’s far from his $1 million unit price prediction, he did state at Web Summit Rio in April that it would do so “over time.”

That bullishness from the Animoca founder has also manifested itself within the company itself. In early May, the company announced its entry into the Bitcoin ecosystem by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a Bitcoin-centric protocol. At the time, Siu suggested that Bitcoin is now primed for Web3.

Siu's projections reflect a broader optimism in the cryptocurrency industry, where rapid technological advancements and increasing adoption rates are expected to drive significant growth. As more individuals and institutions embrace digital assets, the potential for exponential market expansion becomes increasingly plausible.

Aptos charts success in South Korea through bridging Web2 and Web3

Aptos charts success in South Korea through bridging Web2 and Web3Aptos, a major layer 1 blockchain network developed by the experts behind Meta’s canceled stablecoin payment system Diem, is growing in South Korea. In a recent Aptos Day conference held at the Hashed Lounge in Seoul, the Aptos team shared its vision for developing its ecosystem in Korea and attracting users by actively bringing content from Web2 to Web3, instead of simply focusing on cultivating a Web3-only ecosystem.Photo by GuerrillaBuzz on UnsplashDavid Wolinsky, a software engineer at Aptos and a former developer at Facebook, presented Aptos’ key advantages and achievements since its launch last year and outlined the blockchain’s future plans for growth.High-speed Web3 powerhouseIn particular, he highlighted Aptos’ high compatibility with social media, its solid security framework built with the Move programming language and a rapid processing speed of up to 200,000 transactions per second (TPS) — with a time to finality (TTF) of less than one second. Thanks to this impressive speed, Wolinsky explained, lots of projects have onboarded the network, which is anticipated to grow into a bigger ecosystem with more decentralized applications (dApps).Aptos has also carried out over 300 million transactions since its launch in October of last year, creating seven million unique addresses. Just two months following its launch, there were already over 200 projects on the blockchain. Aptos could thus play a significant role in revolutionizing Web3, which is currently dominated by the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM).Facilitating the transition from Web2 to Web3To grow the ecosystem further, Wolinsky emphasized the importance of bringing Web2 users to Web3 in an efficient and seamless manner. Aptos aims to achieve this by facilitating the creation of Aptos-based wallets through integration with platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and Google, allowing users to enjoy various dApps.Wolinsky also noted that Aptos uses Move — an open-source programming language developed by Facebook for writing smart contracts on the Diem blockchain — which is designed to be developer-friendly, employing similar mechanisms that developers generally use to build applications on Web2. This language can attract not only Web2 users but also Web2 developers who are transitioning to Web3 without worrying about the complexity of the process. Aptos argues that Move is more secure than EVM’s Solidity language.Positive prospects in KoreaAptos also regards Korea as a key market for growth, as Korean developers are actively contributing to the Aptos ecosystem and providing helpful feedback. The blockchain disclosed that as of Q3 this year, Korea has 13 Aptos validators — second only after the U.S., which has 14.Christie Lee, Head of Business Development and Partnerships in Korea at Aptos, argued that Korea is innovating the most at the larger corporate level while also contributing to the ecosystem. Lots of endeavors are playing out in the Korean market, she said, as regulatory restrictions in fields like gaming, entertainment, finance and more are starting to loosen. She also added that the Korean market is not only driven by innovation from large companies but also by small developers who can contribute to the ecosystem, noting that the market is a favorable environment for developers to thrive. In addition, Korean users are sensitive to trends and adept at incorporating technology, which would allow them to quickly adopt Web3 culture.

South Korea Launches Blockchain Project to Streamline Public Services

South Korea Launches Blockchain Project to Streamline Public ServicesThe South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) have launched the 2023 blockchain application project to bolster the domestic industry and adapt to the rapidly evolving global blockchain landscape.Photo by Ping Onganankun on Unsplash$1.6 million projectAs part of the Korean government’s broader strategy to promote the blockchain industry, the project has received a budget of approximately 20.7 billion KRW ($1.6 million). The project participants are focused on exploring blockchain-based services that offer convenience to the public and have the potential to penetrate the global market. The digitization of drivers’ licenses is such a service that has been developed and has simplified the lives of Korean citizens. The project encompasses both the public and private sectors, each undertaking six programs. The public sector programs aim to explore blockchain-based services that the government can provide, while the private sector programs are dedicated to supporting the commercialization of business prototypes developed by companies.Public sector programsThe six public sector programs are the implementation of digital badges for national licenses, the development of an online voting system for residents, the establishment of a remote pension eligibility check system, the enhancement of the electronic authentication system, the streamlining of drone operation applications, and the creation of a performance tracking platform for athletes. For instance, the implementation of digital badges for national licenses will greatly streamline the process for individuals who need to present their licenses to relevant organizations as a means of verifying their credentials. Presently, license holders are required to physically visit issuers or navigate their websites to gather the necessary documentation. However, the introduction of this new technology eliminates the need for this cumbersome process.Private sector programsMeanwhile, the private sector programs focus on developing the following six platforms: the battery life authentication system for electric vehicles (EVs), the oil waste trading platform, the non-fungible token (NFT) issuer for digital identity authentication, the NFT concert ticket system, the fractional investment platform for power plants, and the corporate management planner for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives. For example, the introduction of a blockchain-based certificate system to assess the remaining life of EV batteries holds significant implications for both car insurance and the trading of used cars. Currently, the lack of comprehensive data to evaluate the exact value of EV batteries poses challenges to the efficient trade of both used cars and batteries. Establishing this certificate platform will not only promote battery recycling but also positively impact the industry as a whole.
