Gate Ventures, Boon Ventures launching $20M crypto fund

Web3 & Enterprise·October 15, 2024, 8:24 AM

Gate Ventures, the investment arm of Gate.io, a global cryptocurrency exchange with its origins in China, has gotten together with Thailand’s Boon Ventures and Movement Labs, to launch a $20 million fund aimed at supporting projects that utilize the Move programming language, as well as interoperability with the Ethereum ecosystem.

Accelerating Move-based blockchain adoption

Movement Labs is a developer of modular Move-based blockchains. A press release published on PR Newswire on Oct. 13 outlined that the firms intend to direct the fund towards a number of key areas. Firstly, its objective will be to accelerate the adoption of Move-based blockchain solutions. Secondly, the fund will be directed towards supporting projects which enhance security and performance in decentralized networks.

A further objective is the extension of support to projects which bridge Move and Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) ecosystems. The final key objective has been set out to drive innovation in Web3 infrastructure and applications.

Gate Ventures Managing Partner Kevin Yang claimed that the $20 million fund “marks a significant milestone in [the company’s] mission to drive forward-thinking solutions in the Web3 ecosystem.” Yang added that in collaborating with Movement Labs and other forward-thinking entities within the Web3 sector, the company is “paving the way for the future of decentralized technology.”

Mentorship & hackathons

Web3 startups supported by the fund will be given access to a mentorship program, while hackathon events will also be organized. Furthermore, there will be an opportunity for selected startups to participate in a research grant program relative to blockchain interoperability.

Gate Ventures garnered attention within the industry recently, with the announcement in August that it had entered into a partnership with Abu Dhabi’s Blockchain Center. That collaboration has led to the establishment of Falcon Gate Ventures, a $100 million Web3 innovation fund.

Last month, the company participated in the Series A funding round of Kroma, an Ethereum layer-2 network project.

While interoperability is singled out as a key objective of this fund, Movement Labs has been working towards that goal recently. Last week, the firm appointed an omnichain interoperability protocol project, LayerZero, as an interoperability provider. It’s envisaged that the partnership will enable developers using the Move programming language to create decentralized applications that can run across various blockchain networks, including EVM.

While Facebook parent company Meta developed the Move programming language, Movement Labs has worked towards developing its use further. Earlier in the year, Movement partnered with Aptos Labs, a firm that was founded by ex-Meta employees that has built out a network based on Move, in another effort to bring about blockchain interoperability relative to EVM and non-EVM networks.

A spokesperson for Movement Labs told Cointelegraph that “the ultimate goal is to create an integrated blockchain environment where developers can build across platforms without sacrificing security or performance.”

Back in April, Movement raised $38 million in a Series A financing round which was led by Polychain Capital. At the time, Movement Labs Co-Founder Rushi Manche said that he and his co-founders “started building Movement to increase the velocity of innovation in crypto where the next Facebook can be built on-chain by developers who do not have the resources for large development teams and expensive auditors.”

Phemex introduces Lending Protocol and Pulse Season 3

Stella Chan, the chief operating officer of Phemex, a crypto derivatives exchange with a presence in Turkey and Singapore, recently provided details of the company’s unveiling of its Lending Protocol and SocialFi initiative Pulse Season 3. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Chan outlined that since the founding of the firm in 2019, the company has been evolving and working towards carving out a niche for itself in the industry. The executive confirmed that the exchange business has reached a point where daily trading volume now exceeds $2 billion across more than 300 trading pairs. Pulse Season 3Chan is also the co-founder of Phemex’s Pulse, a social trading platform that rewards users while attempting to foster a community spirit within the crypto sphere. As part of Phemex events held at Token 2024 in Dubai last week, the company announced Pulse Season 3, a SocialFi mechanism to incentivize community engagement. The initiative introduces casting and tipping features. Casting is a means through which community members can post up content. Meanwhile, tipping serves as a method through which other community members can acknowledge and reward high-quality community member contributions. Through this initiative Phemex is hoping to deliver an enhanced experience where trading seamlessly intersects with trending topics and insightful content.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashPhemex Lending ProtocolAlongside Pulse Season 3, the company has also launched the Phemex Lending Protocol, a feature allowing users to borrow crypto at competitive rates while earning interest. As part of that offering, all loans are safeguarded through the collateralization of the user’s digital assets. With an initial liquidity allocation of $22 million, this protocol has been established with an eye towards empowering traders to amplify their capital without selling their assets, while aligning in a more general sense with the user’s overall trading needs. Phemex is attempting to spearhead the transition towards greater user autonomy without compromising security. The Phemex Lending Protocol is central to that effort, offering users competitive borrowing rates and opportunities for passive income generation.  Standing testament to that, the platform offers interest rates on USDT starting at 3.57%. For those that hold vePT, the wrapped version of the platform's native Phemex token (PT), an additional 30% discount on borrowing rates is being offered. vePT is destined to act as a token which confers voting authority in the not too distant future, relative to Phemex’s governing decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). The platform is further enabling capital efficiency from the service user’s perspective by applying very little restriction so that funds can be withdrawn and redeployed at will, with minimum delay. Coming off the back of these announcements during Token 2024, the company appears to be following through on that momentum. Taking to the X social media platform on April 25, Chan outlined details of a plethora of user experience (UX) upgrades relative to its Pulse offering. Future plansLooking ahead, Phemex envisages the offering of a broader range of products tailored to user needs. Plans for an automated market maker (AMM) protocol aim to provide users with passive earning opportunities by contributing to liquidity. Additionally, Phemex is exploring the development of an on-chain credit scoring mechanism, leveraging its soulbound digital identity token to enhance access to decentralized finance (DeFi).

HashKey OTC scores in-principle approval in Singapore

HashKey OTC, the over-the-counter (OTC) trading arm of the Hong Kong-headquartered HashKey Group, has reached a regulatory milestone with the acquisition of a major payment license in Singapore.Photo by Mike Enerio on UnsplashEnabling digital asset service offeringIn a recent announcement via the firm’s official blog, HashKey Group revealed that HashKey OTC has secured in-principle approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) for its Major Payment Institution (MPI) license application. This approval positions HashKey OTC to offer regulated digital payment token services in Singapore, representing a significant stride in the firm’s efforts towards regulatory compliance. CEO of HashKey OTC, Li Liang, emphasized the company's steadfast commitment to regulatory adherence, considering it a pivotal step towards providing comprehensive and regulated over-the-counter trading solutions for its clients. Liang highlighted the significance of the in-principle approval, expressing the company's vision to furnish a wide array of digital payment tokens and fiat currencies in a regulated environment. The approval has generated optimism within the global crypto market community, particularly amidst prevailing uncertainties surrounding crypto regulations worldwide. Expansion initiativesHashKey OTC's attainment of the MPI license aligns with its strategic expansion initiatives, building upon its earlier success in securing a capital markets services license for fund management in Singapore. This achievement reflects the company's desire to operate within legal frameworks while delivering innovative crypto solutions to its clientele. Furthermore, HashKey OTC's regulatory triumph mirrors the broader regulatory landscape in Singapore, where crypto firms navigate stringent requirements to establish credibility and trust within the market. MPI approvalsThe exchange's milestone mirrors similar successes achieved by other industry players. Recent months have seen a raft of digital asset industry enterprises achieve a similar milestone. In January, American digital asset custodian BitGo acquired in-principle MPI approval. Last November, Taipei-headquartered crypto exchange business XREX achieved a similar outcome. Other entities who had been successful in pursuing MPI licensing earlier in 2023 include crypto exchange Upbit Singapore, crypto trading firm GSR, American crypto exchange platform Coinbase and enterprise blockchain firm Ripple. Despite Singapore's reputation as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction, recent decisions by MAS have demonstrated a cautious approach towards certain crypto products. While spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) received approval in the United States, MAS has opted against permitting the listing of such ETF products for retail investors, citing concerns over the asset's volatility and suitability for retail investment. HashKey is one of only two entities to have secured similar licenses in Hong Kong. Last month, affiliate company HashKey Capital, a Singapore-based crypto fund manager, launched a series of indices designed to track cryptocurrencies in a collaboration with FTSE Russell. Also in January, the Hong Kong business partnered with crypto derivatives platform OKX with the objective of advancing compliant virtual asset innovation. HashKey OTC's acquisition of a major payment license in Singapore, amid a backdrop of similar businesses pursuing similar licensing in various jurisdictions recently, signifies a significant advancement in regulatory compliance within the crypto industry. The approval underscores the exchange's desire to provide regulated over-the-counter trading solutions while navigating the evolving regulatory landscape in Singapore and beyond.

Animoca founder: $200T crypto market within 10 years

The global cryptocurrency market is poised for unprecedented growth, potentially reaching $200 trillion within a decade, according to Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, a prominent Hong Kong-based Web3 game software company and venture capital firm. 2-3x within 18 monthsCurrently valued at approximately $2.7 trillion according to data from crypto aggregator CoinGecko, the cryptocurrency market is set to double or triple in the near term, Siu predicted on The Valr Podcast on May 28. “In the near term — within 12 to 18 months — we can conceive of a doubling or tripling of the space,” he stated, expressing strong confidence in the industry's future milestones. Siu elaborated on his bold forecast, suggesting that over a five to ten-year period, the market could accelerate by 100 to 200 times, potentially reaching a valuation of $200 trillion or even higher. In conversation with Farzam Ehsani, the co-founder of Valr, a platform that allows users to buy, sell, store and transfer crypto assets, Siu said:“I think we could reach that kind of number within a decade.” This explosive growth, according to Siu, will be driven by billions of people becoming digital property owners within the Web3 ecosystem. Siu stated: “It is entirely conceivable that we’re going to have a billion property owners because we’re going to have a billion token holders. This is not possible in the physical world.”Photo by Pierre Borthiry - Peiobty on UnsplashAsia fastest growing marketSiu also pointed out the regional dynamics within the Web3 space, noting that Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing market. “Right now, the leading force in Web3 is clearly Asia,” he argued, citing robust adoption rates in regions such as Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Japan. In contrast, jurisdictions like the United States are lagging behind, primarily due to regulatory uncertainties. Siu pointed out that historically, the United States has tended to take a leadership role where new technology is concerned. Web3 is turning out to be the exception to that rule. With that, he thinks that it is Asia that will lead the way and that it will continue to lead for the foreseeable future where Web3 is concerned. Bullish on BitcoinHis optimism about the Web3 market's potential aligns with his bullish stance on Bitcoin, currently standing at a market capitalization of $1.3 trillion. Siu made another bold prediction recently, expressing confidence that Bitcoin would eventually reach $1 million. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $68,346. While that’s far from his $1 million unit price prediction, he did state at Web Summit Rio in April that it would do so “over time.”  That bullishness from the Animoca founder has also manifested itself within the company itself. In early May, the company announced its entry into the Bitcoin ecosystem by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a Bitcoin-centric protocol. At the time, Siu suggested that Bitcoin is now primed for Web3. Siu's projections reflect a broader optimism in the cryptocurrency industry, where rapid technological advancements and increasing adoption rates are expected to drive significant growth. As more individuals and institutions embrace digital assets, the potential for exponential market expansion becomes increasingly plausible.
