Crypto community optimism across Asia following Trump’s election victory

Policy & Regulation·November 07, 2024, 7:20 AM

Recognition of Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 6 has led to many crypto proponents in Asia foreseeing a positive outcome for crypto within the Asian region, and globally.

Bright future for crypto

According to a report published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), crypto proponents in China are expectant of a bright future for crypto both on the Chinese mainland and in Hong Kong. The mindset seems to be that a pro-crypto stance in the U.S. will lead to other jurisdictions taking a similar approach. HashKey CEO Livio Weng expressed such a view, stating:

“Trump’s pro-crypto stance is expected not only to invigorate the US virtual-asset industry, but also to encourage Hong Kong to further relax its own virtual-asset policies in its quest to become a global Web3 hub.”

Prior to being elected, Trump had promised to fire Gary Gensler, who as Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has pursued a strategy of regulation by enforcement, a course of action that has been broadly criticized by crypto market participants in the United States. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse wasted no time in calling on Trump to act, and to fire Gensler.

Influencing regulatory attitudes

There seems to be a consensus among commentators that the regulatory approach to crypto in the U.S. is going to become crypto-friendly. Crypto analyst Miles Deutscher suggests that “a Trump victory is a WIN for US tech innovation, as it would solidify [the United States’] status as a crypto powerhouse.”

Weng believes that “this shift could also positively influence regulatory attitudes toward virtual assets in mainland China.” That view is mirrored in South Korea by KP Jang, head of Xangle Research. Jang asserts that “if Trump implements bold virtual asset policies while improving existing regulations, it is expected to accelerate regulatory reforms in Korea as well.”

Sumit Gupta, CEO and co-founder of India’s largest crypto exchange, CoinDCX, outlined on X that Trump’s victory is a pivotal moment for global crypto, adding:

”The direct effects of Trump’s policies might not alter India’s regulatory environment right away. However, global sentiment and investor behaviour will be influenced, eventually reaching India.”

The CoinDCX CEO believes that should Trump now appoint regulatory leadership that’s crypto-positive, any resultant crypto regulatory framework adopted by the U.S. could become a blueprint for use by other nations.

Gupta identified further potential upside insofar as the implementation of positive crypto policies by Trump would lead to a more attractive environment for crypto, “potentially opening up enhanced funding opportunities and partnerships for Indian startups as investors seek global growth.”

Bitcoin price surge

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin unit price is up 0.64% over the course of the past 24 hours, at $74,884. American business news channel CNBC reported that Bitcoin could reach $100,000 before Trump even takes office.

Matthew Hougan, chief investment officer (CIO) at crypto asset fund manager Bitwise, said that Trump’s election victory could herald in a “golden age of crypto,” with a friendlier regulatory environment leading to greater institutional investment and mainstream adoption.

This communication will include instructions on procedures including further information on identity verification. To facilitate a smooth transition, Binance’s global trading platform will cease providing services to Japanese residents on November 30, 2023. Additionally, there are plans to change the company name from Sakura Exchange Bitcoin to “Binance Japan Co., Ltd.”This development marks Binance’s initial foray into the Japanese market firmly under its own brand. In November 2022, the company entered the country by acquiring Sakura Exchange Bitcoin (SEBC). The forthcoming trading platform, dedicated exclusively to domestic residents, represents the first step in Binance’s strategic approach to the Japanese market. The new services on the platform are set to launch during the summer, with future expansion plans to broaden that offering further. Binance also intends to introduce initiatives in Japan that leverage its ecosystem, including the provision of free educational resources through “Binance Academy” to promote Web3 education.Service offeringThe newly created entity will offer crypto spot trading with fiat deposit and withdrawal facility to its Japanese customers. Crypto lending products will be provided through a digital asset earn program. Upon launch of the dedicated service, crypto derivative trading will not be offered although it is understood that it may be offered at a later stage. Derivatives are likely to be under much closer scrutiny by the Japanese regulator than Binance’s other products. It is worth noting that Binance had previously received a warning from the Financial Services Agency (FSA) for offering cryptocurrency trading services to Japanese residents without proper registration. With its full-fledged entry into the Japanese market, it remains to be seen what impact this move will have. Will it accelerate the regulatory landscape and the adoption of Web3 technology in Japan from a global perspective?Additionally, how smoothly will Binance be able to acquire new accounts while competing with domestic business operators? These developments warrant close attention as they unfold.

Turkey leads in stablecoin purchases relative to GDP

According to a recent report from blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis, stablecoin purchases in Turkey amount to 4.3% of the country's GDP, surpassing all other global economies. The report, titled "The 2024 Crypto Spring Report" highlights Turkey's significant share of stablecoin transactions relative to its economic output.Photo by Michael Jerrard on UnsplashStablecoin activity in TurkeyBetween April 2023 and March 2024, stablecoin purchases in Turkey totaled $38 billion, representing 4.3% of the country's GDP, which was $907 billion as of 2022. This data encompasses transfers between the Turkish lira and stablecoins in either direction, emphasizing the scale of stablecoin activity within the Turkish economy. Chainalysis director of research Kim Grauer explained that stablecoin activity does not directly impact GDP but is expressed as a percentage to provide context for readers. Grauer clarified that the reported figure includes transfers of Turkish lira to stablecoins and vice versa. Turkey's prominence in stablecoin purchases stands out compared to other economies analyzed by Chainalysis. In Thailand and Georgia, stablecoin purchases accounted for 1.3% and 0.7% of GDP, respectively, over the same period. Global trends in stablecoin usageWhile the United States leads in stablecoin transaction volumes, with fiat purchases surpassing $20 billion in March 2024, Turkey's share of stablecoin purchases relative to GDP is notably higher. The use of stablecoins, including Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC), has outpaced other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether, representing over 50% of all transaction volume in recent months. Rapid growth in stablecoin transactionsChainalysis analysts attribute the rapid growth of stablecoin transactions to their utility in everyday transactions beyond trading. Major jurisdictions, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Thailand, have witnessed significant increases in fiat purchases of stablecoins over the past year. Nations experiencing currency volatility and devaluation, such as Turkey, have increasingly turned to stablecoins like USDT to safeguard their savings. Turkey's inflation rate surged to as high as 67% in March, prompting residents to seek alternative stores of value. The findings from Chainalysis underscore the growing prominence of stablecoins in global economic activity, particularly in nations grappling with currency instability. Turkey's significant share of stablecoin purchases relative to GDP reflects a broader trend of increasing adoption of stablecoins for everyday transactions and wealth preservation.
