Lion Group secures $600M facility to fund HYPE token treasury

Web3 & Enterprise·June 20, 2025, 6:02 AM

Lion Group Holding Ltd (LGHL), a Nasdaq-listed financial services firm that provides an all-in-one platform for traders, has announced that it has secured $600 million to fund a Hyperliquid (HYPE) treasury.

In a press release published by PR Newswire on behalf of the firm on June 18, the company outlined that a $600 million funding facility has been put in place by ATW Partners, a New York-headquartered investment firm that manages a number of private equity funds. Global investment bank Chardan Capital acted as the placement agent in facilitating the funding, with the first closing of $10.6 million, as per the subscription agreement.

Corporate treasury strategy

Lion Group will use that money to launch a new corporate treasury strategy built around Hyperliquid’s HYPE token. Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange (DEX) which was created by Hyperliquid Labs, a startup founded by Jeff Yan.

The HYPE token is the native token of the Hyperliquid platform. It’s used to secure the network through staking and for project governance. The token is also used to provide transaction incentives, while the Hyperliquid platform buys back HYPE tokens using trading fee revenues.

Lion Group’s platform offers its users access to contract-for-difference (CFD) trading, total return swap (TRS) trading, over-the-counter (OTC) stock options trading, while also acting as a futures and securities brokerage.

Up until 2022, the firm was based in Hong Kong, opting to relocate to Singapore at that point. Primarily, the company serves corporate clients, individual professional investors and retail investors located in China and throughout the Southeast Asian region.

Future of trading is on-chain

In explaining its rationale for pursuing a HYPE treasury strategy, the company’s CEO, Wilson Wang, stated:

“Hyperliquid represents a natural extension of LGHL's existing derivatives business into decentralized markets, and reflects our conviction that decentralized on-chain execution is the future of trading."

Going forward, the company will pursue a strategic accumulation of HYPE, with the token serving as the firm’s primary reserve asset. In addition to HYPE, Lion Group outlined that it may also allocate funds to purchase Solana (SOL) and Sui (SUI), with these tokens to be staked and custodied with institutional-grade digital asset custodian, BitGo.

Lion Group asserted that both of these assets would form “key pillars” of a treasury strategy “focused on execution-first protocols.” Wang added that the company views “protocols like HYPE, with decentralized sequencing, as foundational to building scalable DeFi systems.”

The company is not the first mover in terms of launching a HYPE-based corporate treasury. On June 17, Eyenovia, Inc. (EYEN), a Nasdaq-listed ophthalmic technology firm, announced that it had entered into a securities purchase agreement with a view towards financing a $50 million HYPE treasury.

Additionally, the firm plans to change its name to Hyperion DeFi and its stock ticker to HYPD later this week to reflect its new HYPE-based reserve strategy.

Shares in Eyenovia closed at $4.83 on June 18, down 30.7% over the course of 24 hours. Lion Group shares closed at $3.33, up 19.78%.

Hong Fang expressed her personal connection to Okcoin, stating:“I’ve been part of Okcoin for five years. Over the years, we have put a lot of love and passion into our brand and product.”She emphasized that this rebranding effort, beginning in Singapore, will extend to Europe and the United States in the coming months, ensuring consistency across key operational jurisdictions. Despite the name change, OKX maintains that customers can expect the same high-quality services within the same regulatory framework under the new brand. Providing the rationale for the change, Hong Fang went on to state:”We also believe it’s time for a change. Rebranding to OKX in our key operational jurisdictions will be great for our customers and business. I’m very excited about what to come next.”Previous rebranding activityFang also revealed that OK Group has already sunsetted the “Okcoin” brand and product in several regions, including Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Hong Kong, and others. Surge in Hong Kong Crypto License Applications from Mainland-Linked Brokers

Surge in Hong Kong Crypto License Applications from Mainland-Linked BrokersTwo new platforms with mainland China links are preparing to apply for retail trading licenses in Hong Kong, with several others believed to be interested in following suit.According to a report published by Nikkei Asia earlier this week, the platforms, Yax and PantherTrade, have connections to mainland online securities brokers. PantherTrade is reportedly associated with Futu, a company which in turn is backed by Chinese tech giant Tencent, one of China’s largest technology companies. Yax, an emerging player in the crypto sector, has strong links to UP Fintech Holding, a Beijing-headquartered firm more commonly known as Tiger Brokers.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashCapital flight concernsThese connections are significant, given the previous involvement of these brokers in helping mainland Chinese customers invest in offshore assets, primarily US stocks. The firms have previously attracted the attention of China’s financial regulators. A notice from the Chinese securities watchdog in December last year compelled them to cease their “illegal cross-border business” activities. While crypto trading is banned in mainland China, an investigative report by the Wall Street Journal in August suggested that global exchange Binance was thriving in China despite the ban. Actions taken by the Chinese authorities are demonstrative of some level of concern with regard to crypto trading and potential capital flight through crypto.VASP licensingThe move by Yax and PantherTrade signals their intention to apply for a virtual asset service platform (VASP) license in Hong Kong, which would enable them to operate cryptocurrency exchanges for retail customers.Currently, both platforms are undergoing third-party assessments, a mandatory step preceding their formal application to the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). The timeline for their applications remains uncertain.Broader interestThe growing interest in VASP licenses is not unique to Yax and PantherTrade. At least four other exchange platforms, similarly linked to mainland China, have also sought the same license, highlighting the eagerness of various players to enter the Hong Kong market. OneDegree, the sole licensed insurer for digital assets in Asia, has observed a significant uptick in license applications, including applications from traditional financial institutions, reflecting a positive trend toward educating the mass market. The SFC’s recent decision to make license application information public is an attempt to enhance transparency, following a scandal related to Dubai-headquartered crypto exchange JPEX in which over HK$1.5 billion (approximately $190 million) in virtual assets reportedly disappeared from the exchange.Currently, only two cryptocurrency exchanges, OSL and Hashkey, have received SFC approval. Others, including online brokers, have considered applying for licenses since late last year but are awaiting greater regulatory clarity before taking the plunge.Hong Kong, under the “one country, two systems” framework, has established itself as a hub for legal retail trading of cryptocurrencies. This development may signify a shift in China’s stance on digital assets and its increasing openness to crypto initiatives, as noted recently by blockchain data provider Chainalysis.
