Tiger Research: Bitcoin and Ethereum take different paths to quantum resistance

November 18, 2025, 6:42 AM
Bitcoin and Ethereum are pursuing different strategies to counter the threat from quantum computing, according to a report from Tiger Research, an Asia-based Web3 research and consulting firm. The report, titled "Can Quantum Computers Destroy Bitcoin?," states that Bitcoin aims to maintain its existing structure while incorporating Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), whereas Ethereum plans to redesign its account structure to absorb PQC. Tiger Research projects that "Q-Day," the point at which quantum computers could break blockchain encryption, will arrive in five to seven years, noting that BlackRock also cited this threat in its spot BTC ETF application. The firm added that while major tech companies like Google and AWS have already transitioned to PQC—which secures communication, transaction signing, and record keeping—Bitcoin and Ethereum remain in the discussion phase.
