Leading Chinese gaming company lines up $100M crypto investment

Web3 & Enterprise·November 18, 2023, 12:37 AM

As yet another indicator of the rising trend of institutional crypto investments, China’s premier board and card game company, Boyaa Interactive, has unveiled plans to invest up to $100 million in cryptocurrency assets, with a focus on Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).

News of Boyaa’s plans emerged following a disclosure from the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, which stated that the company will distribute notices regarding its crypto investment plans during an extraordinary general meeting (EGM). The relevant details are expected to have been supplied to shareholders on or before Nov. 30. The company has emphasized its intention to ensure transparency while adhering to listing rules throughout this process.

Digital asset acquisition over a 12-month period

The decision to delve into the world of cryptocurrencies aligns with Boyaa Interactive’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the evolving Web3 landscape, as highlighted by the company’s board of directors. The proposal outlines a comprehensive strategy to acquire the assets over a 12-month period, pending approval at the upcoming EGM.

The planned acquisition involves allocating approximately $90 million equally between Ethereum and Bitcoin. The remaining $10 million is earmarked for stablecoins Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC). Boyaa Interactive asserts that the actual acquisitions will depend on open market conditions, with a commitment not to pay premiums exceeding 10% of prevailing market prices. Funding for this initiative will be sourced from the company’s existing cash reserves.

The board will play a crucial role in determining the specific cryptocurrencies to acquire, their allocation ratios and the optimal timing for purchase. The emphasis is on prudent risk management, aligning with Boyaa’s business development strategies.

Diversification strategy

The company justifies its choice of Bitcoin and Ethereum by citing their alignment with its long-term development goals. In the document, Boyaa Interactive highlights the importance of investing in cryptocurrencies with robust market liquidity and substantial market values. Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC, and USDT, chosen for their high market liquidity, align seamlessly with Boyaa’s strategic vision.

In its stock exchange filing, it justifies these plans on the basis of a desire to diversify its holdings. The document reads:

”[The] purchase of cryptocurrencies is also an important arrangement for the Group’s asset allocation, as allocating part of the Group’s idle reserve funds in cryptocurrencies can serve as a diversification to holding cash in treasury management, and a measure to balance investment risks and returns.”

Growing asset acceptance

The move into the cryptocurrency market comes at a time when institutional investors are increasingly flocking to major assets like BTC and ETH. Reports indicate significant inflows of institutional funds into these cryptocurrencies, setting the stage for what appears to be an extended bull market.

Boyaa first showed an interest in holding crypto on its balance sheet back in August when it proposed allocating $5 million towards cryptocurrency investment. The company following up with a $100 million investment serves as a testament to the growing acceptance and integration of cryptocurrencies within mainstream business strategies.

Saudi Arabia Looks to Diversify Through Web3

Saudi Arabia Looks to Diversify Through Web3Saudi Arabia is intensifying its efforts to diversify its economy as part of its ambitious Vision 2030 initiative. In a move away from its traditional reliance on oil, the kingdom is embracing cutting-edge technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) and is delving into the burgeoning gaming industry. That’s the view of Animoca Brands Co-Founder Yat Siu, who, in a recent interview with Cointelegraph, highlighted Saudi Arabia’s keen interest in Web3, emphasizing the country’s partnerships with entities like The Sandbox and Animoca itself.Photo by Hala AlGhanim on UnsplashDriving gaming growthSiu believes that Saudi Arabia is making a concerted effort to explore the possibilities of the new iteration of the internet, particularly in the realm of Web3 gaming and blockchain gaming, where asset ownership is verified on the blockchain. He stated:“I think Saudi [Arabia] understands the principle that Web3 gaming or blockchain gaming — the one that we actually prove the owner assets — is going to be the future of gaming.”While Saudi Arabia has yet to make a significant global impact in game and AI development, experts in the emerging field of Web3 believe that the kingdom’s investments in gaming could have far-reaching implications. The Boston Consulting Group reported that Saudi Arabia accounts for 45% of the region’s gaming sector, with a total value exceeding $1.8 billion. It also boasts one of the highest game revenues in the area, according to Ireland-based gaming content creator, Allcorrect.$38 billion gaming fundSiu is not the only one to believe in the efficacy of Saudi’s Web3 efforts. Poland-based Web3 gaming platform GameSwift also articulated a similar view recently. In a tweet thread published last month, the firm acknowledged the $38 billion gaming fund launched by the Saudi royal family. That initiative involves a Gaming Hub, the first incubator for esports in the world. The objective of the hub is to empower early-stage studios and provide an accelerator program for their growth, with direct investment going to top ten studios.Cryptocurrency uncertaintyDespite its understanding of the high-level concept of Web3, Saudi Arabia faces uncertainties regarding the integration of cryptocurrencies and virtual assets into gaming due to the absence of clear regulations. Siu explained that while Saudi Arabia is proactive in investigating cryptocurrencies, other regions like Hong Kong, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offer more clarity on what can be done with crypto and Web3.Siu noted that Saudi Arabia is actively seeking information on best practices and strategies from experts like Animoca. To encourage Web3 adoption, financial literacy is key, according to Siu.He emphasized that users must have a certain level of financial literacy to fully embrace Web3, as it goes beyond traditional banking. Understanding the potential value of digital assets and their network effects is crucial for Web3 users.Saudi Arabia is not the only Gulf nation to pivot to Web3. Oman is looking to do likewise based on similar rationale — to diversify away from an oil-based economy. The UAE is also actively working towards creating the right conditions to nurture Web3 startup businesses.

SBI and TradeFinex establish 'SBI XDC Network APAC'

Japanese financial services company SBI Holdings has successfully established "SBI XDC Network APAC" in Japan, following through on an intended joint venture with TradeFinex, the driving force behind the XDC Network.Photo by William Warby on UnsplashJV company formationAt the end of September, the two companies outlined the starting point of an intended collaboration. Only three months later, SBI has come back with an update, a press release published on Dec. 27, to detail the progress that has been made thus far. According to that document, the companies established joint venture corporate entity SBI XDC Network APAC Co. Ltd. on Dec. 18. Among the directors of the new company is the President of BITPoint Japan, a wholly owned subsidiary crypto exchange business of SBI. Majority stakeholderSBI will be the majority stakeholder in the venture, holding 60% of the company’s shares while Dubai-based TradeFinex will be the minor partner, with a 40% shareholding. The press release outlines that the stakeholders will “work to expand the use case using the blockchain technology of the XDC Network in global economic activities centered on trade finance and cross-border payments, not just the handling of tokens.” With that, this enterprise-focused blockchain initiative aims to elevate the efficiency of trade finance. Going forward, it endeavors to broaden the applications of XDC Network's blockchain technology in global economic activities, with the emphasis remaining on trade finance and cross-border payments. The XDC Network, inaugurated in 2017, is a community-driven platform tailored explicitly for trade finance and payments. It introduces a smart contract system that streamlines global trade operations by tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs) such as bonds, trade assets and trade documents. Operating on a high-speed, secure and cost-effective blockchain, XDC Network aspires to transform the landscape of trade finance. SBI Group has been actively involved in various services related to the XDC Network, including being the first exchange in Japan to handle XDC tokens. This was made possible through a partnership with SBI VC Trade, a company within the SBI Group specializing in crypto asset exchange services. Corda platform proof of conceptLogo design has been completed for the new entity, while a website has also been launched. Not wasting any time, the new company has already initiated a proof-of-concept (PoC) experiment. The experiment involves connecting the XDC Network with the Corda platform from SBI R3 Japan and the Corda Bridge from IMPEL GLOBAL. The PoC experiment revolves around conducting fiat payments generated by business-to-business transactions in XDC via Corda and the Corda Bridge. Leveraging a hybrid blockchain with both private and public characteristics, the objective is to attempt to offer a seamless one-stop service that settles both private and public aspects simultaneously. The company claims that this approach achieves an efficient and smooth payment method for cross-border transactions, including international trade, outshining conventional fiat currency transactions.
