Matrixport’s Market Sentiment Index Points Towards Bullish Momentum

Markets·August 15, 2023, 1:02 AM

Matrixport, the Singapore-headquartered digital asset financial services provider, has once again showcased its Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index in forecasting unit price trends relative to Bitcoin. The company has repeatedly pointed to trends indicated by the proprietary index, with its current signals on this occasion pointing towards a potential resurgence of bullish sentiment for Bitcoin (BTC).

Potential price resurgence

Recent data from Matrixport’s index demonstrates a notable shift from 30% to 60%, a significant rebound following July’s sharp decline from above 90%. This rebound has caught the attention of Markus Thielen, who serves as the Head of Research and Strategy at Matrixport. Thielen conveyed his thoughts on the current indications provided by the Index in a recent note to clients.

Thielen noted that the index appears to have reached its bottom, as the daily signal indicates an impending upward push. This tactical bullishness, following a four-week period of consolidation, raises the possibility of Bitcoin prices resuming their upward trajectory.

Historical data comparison

Drawing upon historical patterns, the index’s peaks and troughs, along with its 21-day simple moving average (SMA), have consistently aligned with shifts between bullish and bearish trends in Bitcoin’s value. Currently, the 21-day SMA shows signs of bottoming out, which further bolsters the argument for an upcoming resurgence of positive volatility in the Bitcoin market.

Gauging sentiment

At its core, the Greed & Fear Index serves as a gauge for investor sentiment within the cryptocurrency realm. When readings exceed 90%, they signify a state of greed or unwarranted optimism, whereas readings below 10% denote extreme fear or pessimism. These metrics hold a certain significance as they often coincide with market peaks marked by excessive optimism and bottoms marked by intense fear.

For the past several weeks, Bitcoin’s price movement has been subdued, oscillating within the range of $28,000 to $30,000. This stagnation has coincided with broader market volatility and anticipations of forthcoming interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the early months of the upcoming year.

Analysts are pinpointing consideration by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding the approval of a spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) as a pivotal catalyst for future price fluctuations given the world’s largest asset manager, BlackRock, has gotten involved. In a recent interview with Forbes, contributor Sam Lyman stated: “A lot of bitcoin ETFs have been filed in the last couple years — but none from an asset manager as high-profile and well connected as BlackRock.”

Not an exact science

Matrixport’s Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index stands as one individual tool which can be utilized in order to arrive at a forecast relative to Bitcoin pricing. Price forecasting is far from an exact science and while it is encouraging that the Index is pointing towards a potential bullish resurgence in Bitcoin’s price movement, market participants will need to remain mindful that markets by their very nature are unpredictable, particularly so when it comes to a nascent asset such as Bitcoin.

As the market watches the SEC’s deliberations relative to a Bitcoin ETF closely, the time ahead is likely to hold significant developments that could shape the future trajectory of Bitcoin’s value.

Philippines to move forward with CBDC without blockchain

The Philippines' central bank has confirmed it has no plans to issue a retail version of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) but that it has definite plans to introduce a wholesale-level CBDC, albeit without using blockchain as the underlying technology. Avoiding retail-level bank run riskThe bank expressed concerns that a retail CBDC could potentially trigger bank runs, given the velocity at which digital currency can be transacted. However, in an interview with local media outlet, the Inquirer, the central bank governor Eli Remolona clarified that within the next two years, the country has definite plans to roll out a wholesale CBDC. CBDCs come in retail and wholesale forms, with the former accessible to the general public and the latter exclusively for institutional use. While the Philippines central bank initiated an exploratory study previously relative to CBDC use, concerns have been raised by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) about the readiness of institutions to handle the risks associated with CBDCs.Photo by Krisia on PexelsDismissing blockchainDespite this move, the bank does not intend to utilize blockchain or digital ledger technology, which are fundamental to many virtual assets. Remolona stated: "Other central banks have tried blockchain, but it didn’t go well." Instead, the CBDC will operate on a payment and settlement system owned by the central bank, with a focus on wholesale transactions mediated by banks. This marks a shift in the central bank's approach to underlying technology where a CBDC is concerned. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) initially embarked on an exploratory study regarding CBDCs in 2022, known as Project CBDCPh. Upon completion of that study, it followed up with a pilot project called Project Agila, concentrating on a wholesale CBDC. Project Agila leaned on the use of the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain, considering it for use on the first wholesale CBDC.  Hyperledger Fabric is an open-source blockchain framework hosted by the Linux Foundation. Companies like IBM, SAP and Intel have all contributed to the development of the enterprise-grade permissioned blockchain network. However, it appears that the BSP is shying away from using any type of blockchain-based solution in establishing its CBDC. Regional steps towards CBDC useThe central bank of the Philippines is among several in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region that are working towards the introduction of a CBDC. Earlier this month an official from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) outlined that the central bank will move forward with CBDC development while working towards addressing privacy concerns that citizens may have with a digital rupee. Towards the end of last month, the Japanese government, in collaboration with the Bank of Japan, appeared to be gearing up for the rollout of a CBDC. In a recent meeting between both parties, several legislative matters were identified as key to ensuring a smooth path to the unobstructed launch of a digital currency. There has also been a lot of activity relative to attempts to utilize CBDCs for cross-border trade over the course of the past year. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the country announced the first-ever use of its CBDC or digital dirham in a trade deal with China using mBridge, a multi-CBDC platform that supports peer-to-peer, cross-border payments in real time.

China disrupts massive crypto-related laundering operation

While cryptocurrencies may be banned in China, crypto trading activity continues in some corners, nonetheless, sometimes through accessing overseas exchanges. With that, authorities recently uncovered a massive underground banking operation that exploited crypto trading platforms to evade local forex regulations.Photo by Manuel Joseph on Pexels$2.2 billion laundering operationOn Sunday, an account on popular Chinese social media platform WeChat run by China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) published details of the $2.2 billion laundering operation bust. Xu Xiao, the Inspector at the Qingdao Branch of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, revealed that the scheme involved underground banks who purchased virtual currencies and then sold the virtual currencies through overseas trading platforms to obtain the foreign currency they needed. This process, he explained, completes the conversion of yuan and foreign currencies, constituting the illegal act of buying and selling foreign exchange. Stringent capital controlsChina enforces stringent rules on money transfers outside the country. Citizens are limited to exchanging up to $50,000 in foreign currency and require a permit for transactions beyond that limit. Any transaction exceeding the limit without a permit is considered money laundering. During a recent investigation, authorities seized cryptocurrencies valued at approximately $28,000 in Tether, Litecoin and other digital currencies. However, the operation is estimated to have facilitated the movement of over $2.2 billion, involving more than a thousand bank accounts across 17 provinces and municipalities. Monetary control loopholesChina, once the largest cryptocurrency market, imposed a comprehensive ban on crypto exchanges in September 2017 and subsequently expanded its restrictions to include crypto mining and trading. Despite these measures, reports have surfaced about underground crypto exchange operations. Earlier this year, an investigative report by the Wall Street Journal found that global exchange Binance continues to do thriving business with Chinese customers. Global crypto exchanges are reportedly still onboarding Chinese clients indirectly. The South China Morning Post (SCMP) recently accused Binance of facilitating Chinese crypto trading accounts by falsely claiming they are from Taiwan. While mainland China adopts a hostile stance towards cryptocurrencies, the special administrative region of Hong Kong remains progressive in the sector. Hong Kong’s regulatory authorities have introduced specific rules for cryptocurrencies and are licensing crypto exchanges operating within the jurisdiction. Arthur Hayes, the co-founder of the BitMEX crypto derivatives platform, recently described Hong Kong as the gateway for mainland China to global capital markets. Hayes asserted that wealthy Chinese individuals all bank in Hong Kong and with that, they all have access to crypto exchanges and brokers. In Cambodia, it is understood that illicit Chinese-linked activities oftentimes implicate the use of U.S. dollar stablecoin Tether (USDT) to move funds in and out of China even though Tether is banned in Cambodia. The latest crackdown in China underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in controlling crypto-related activities, highlighting the dynamic nature of such activity within and adjacent to mainland China. As regulatory scrutiny intensifies, the contrast between mainland China’s approach and Hong Kong’s more open stance toward cryptocurrencies becomes increasingly evident.
