Funding target achieved

The closing of the fund was announced recently by No Limit Holdings, an investment partnership specializing in global crypto assets based in Malta. ClearVue had entered into a joint venture with No Limit Holdings in order to establish the fund. No Limit Holdings was founded by former Binance Chief Strategy Officer Gin Chao. Partnering with Chao in that venture is another former Binance executive, Anatoly Kondiyakov, who served as Binance’s Head of APAC Institutional Sales in Singapore for four years.

News of the fund first emerged in October 2022, when the fund promoters started to distribute a pitch deck. It’s understood that the fund was targeting investment into layer one blockchains prior to their native tokens going live.

Chao made the following statement relative to the closing of the fund:

“We are grateful for the confidence and trust that our partners have placed in us for this first fund, particularly given the breadth of industries our LP base represents and the challenging macroeconomic conditions during this period. At the same time, this has created an ideal window to deploy capital into the exciting opportunities that the current market presents.”

Web3 “where the Internet was in the late 90s”

ClearVue Partners Founder, Harry Hui, said that the firm was “excited to team up with Gin and the NLH team. They have deep sector expertise and an incredible track record of success.” Hui added that “Web3.0 is where the Internet was in the late 90s and as blockchain adoption increases, we believe there will be significant value creation for both for our investors as well as for our consumer and technology portfolio companies.”

The CVP NoLimit Fund I has already invested in more than twenty crypto projects located globally. Two of them have been listed on multiple digital asset exchanges. Meanwhile, the fund’s administrators have suggested that it has established a robust pipeline of investible projects, and that it has the expectation to invest in an additional twenty projects over the course of the next twelve months.

Seed-stage focus

The fund has been focusing on early-stage projects and strategic funding rounds, with individual investments of between $250,000 and $3 million. Some of the projects it has backed thus far include Binance.US, crypto and blockchain infrastructure firm Mysten Labs, Singapore-based dApp developer Hogwarts Labs, Connext Labs which claims to be the HTTP of Web3, and decentralized digital asset money market, IQ Labs.

Venture capital investment into the crypto and Web3 space broke all records during the last crypto bull market. Naturally, it has suffered a huge decline in its wake. However, the closing out of this $50 million fund demonstrates that ultimately new money will return to the sector.

This is further exemplified by a recent announcement by Kraken Ventures, the venture investment wing of the well-known crypto exchange business, setting out that it is raising a second $100 million fund, earmarked for investment within the sector.

Korean crypto exchange Upbit launches BTC-ETH Duo Index

Dunamu, the operator of South Korea’s leading crypto exchange Upbit, announced today that it launched a new crypto price tracking service, Bitcoin-Ethereum Duo Index (Duo Index). The news was reported by the local media outlet Etoday.  The service tracks the two most prominent tokens, Bitcoin and Ethereum, each being the top performer and the runner-up in terms of market capitalization in the crypto asset market. It is a strategy index that equally weights Bitcoin and Ethereum, with their holding ratio updated to 1:1 every month. The weightings of the two cryptocurrencies in the index are subject to an adjustment factor, which is based on their prices. The BTC-ETC Duo Index is currently available on the Upbit Cryptocurrency Index (UBCI) website. Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashThe Federal Reserve’s approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January has drawn significant attention from many investors, driving up the prices not only of Bitcoin but also Ethereum. Dunamu explained that this heightened interest surrounding Bitcoin and Ethereum is the reason behind its launch of the Duo Index. New tool to boost crypto portfolio’s performance Referencing the Duo Index can help investors estimate their own crypto assets portfolios and boost their performances based on the indicators it offers, including the winning rate of the two coins combined.   The current winning rate of the Duo Index stands at over 58%, which is three percentage points higher than that of the Upbit Market Index (UBMI), which tracks not only Bitcoin and Ethereum but also other altcoins. The high winning rate of the Duo Index demonstrates the bullish sentiment surrounding the two top coins. A Dunamu official stated that the company will continue to keep up with the crypto market trend and further release other strategy indices that would serve the emerging needs of the investors.

Energy Theft Results in Crypto Mining Operation Shutdown in Borneo

Energy Theft Results in Crypto Mining Operation Shutdown in BorneoAuthorities in Miri, a city on the island of Borneo in Malaysia, swiftly responded to a tip-off from the public, leading to the successful shutdown of an illegal cryptocurrency mining operation.According to local news source, The Borneo Post, during a well-executed raid, 34 mining servers were confiscated, all of which were illicitly drawing power through cable tapping.Photo by Muhammad Faiz Zulkeflee on UnsplashEnergy thieves turn to miningWhile Borneo offers some of the lowest energy prices in Malaysia, it continues to struggle with the problem of energy theft. That issue has been highlighted via a recent utility announcement. Sarawak Energy, the local energy provider, estimated that the criminal operation caused losses of approximately 6,000 Malaysian ringgits ($1,300) worth of stolen electricity each month. The rise of the Bitcoin mining industry in 2023 has brought about record-high network hash rates and network difficulty. While the growth of miners generally signifies the robustness of the Bitcoin network, smaller operators without the economies of scale enjoyed by larger corporations face challenges. One such challenge is energy generation to power their mining servers. In pursuit of higher profit potential with lower electricity rates, illegal mining operators are drawn to stealing electricity from the grid. By eliminating energy expenses, these illicit miners can accumulate profits and offset equipment costs.Fourth recent instanceThe recent incident marks the fourth major operation in Senadin, where Miri is located, where authorities have cracked down on power theft cases related to cryptocurrency mining in 2023. So far, over 137 Bitcoin mining servers have been seized during these operations. On the other side of the spectrum, legitimate crypto mining companies are actively securing funding to support their mining projects. Riot Platforms, for instance, invested a substantial $162.9 million to acquire 33,280 state-of-the-art equipment from MicroBT, a leading producer of mining machinery. In another example, Coinbase extended a $50 million credit line to Canadian cryptocurrency firm Hut 8 Mining, facilitating its operations. Furthermore, Volcano Energy, a public-private partnership in El Salvador, secured an initial funding of $250 million for its ambitious Bitcoin mining venture.Appropriate mining activityThe spate of recent instances of illegal mining in Borneo acts as a reminder of the importance of regulatory compliance and adherence to the law within the cryptocurrency industry. While the allure of lucrative profits may tempt some to engage in illegal activities, the consequences can be severe. Mining can be a positive societal force when applied within appropriate circumstances.A move by the President of Kyrgyzstan last week to harness crypto mining in order to utilize energy that is otherwise being wasted at the central Asian country’s Kambar-Ata-2 hydropower plant serves as a recent example of a positive use case for the activity. In Texas in the United States, crypto miners are collaborating with those that manage the local energy grid, turning off miners at times when the state is on the brink of suffering blackouts. As the crypto mining landscape continues to evolve, it is essential for both authorities and legitimate operators to work together in finding sustainable solutions that ensure the industry’s growth while maintaining the integrity of the energy infrastructure.

Korean Cafe Attracts Customers with NFTs

Korean Cafe Attracts Customers with NFTsA South Korean cafe owner has employed non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as an ingenious marketing strategy to attract customers.©Pexels/Leeloo ThefirstNFT holder benefitsIn an interview with Korean crypto news outlet Digital Asset, Yoo Hyun, the entrepreneurial business owner, explained that he was seeking a strong marketing tool to capture the attention of the NFT market. Yoo was interested in seeing if his cafe could remain profitable while also offering substantial benefits to its customers.Since April 2022, Yoo has released a total of 50 Ethereum-based NFTs related to his cafe, Hide Me, Please (HMP), in two separate batches of 25 each. The first set of NFTs grants holders a free cup of coffee or drink daily for life, while the second set offers an extra drink or dessert with each drink purchased.Increased revenueThis unique NFT initiative has led to increased revenue for the cafe. Kim Dae-sung, the CFO of HMP, explained that the cafe’s monthly revenue increased by 15% compared to the same period last year.HMP is currently selling 500 NFTs as a third set and plans to release more depending on demand. Yoo highlighted the importance of an appealing interior design and tempting desserts, as NFT holders visiting for a free coffee may be enticed to purchase a dessert as well.Regular customersYoo asserts that the food and beverage industry hinges on retaining regular customers and believes NFTs can help achieve that objective. HMP aspires to become a community-based platform, and according to Kim, many digital artists are interested in the space that the cafe provides because it enables them to connect with clients. Collaborations often take place, and while the cafe charges for food and drinks, it does not charge for space rental. This approach fosters a positive impression and contributes to a strong brand image.High-quality cafeAt present, about 5% of HMP’s customers hold NFT memberships. Yoo and Kim plan to increase this number to 10% but no higher, as excessive reliance on NFT members could jeopardize the business. They underlined the significance of remaining a high-quality cafe, staying true to the core foundation of their enterprise. As they anticipate the growth of the Web 3.0 ecosystem, Yoo and Kim believe that with continued efforts, HMP will gain even greater value.
