Korea’s strategy for metaverse promotion

In February last year, the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT revealed a metaverse promotion strategy involving a comprehensive support plan of 237 billion KRW ($179.6 million). This initiative seeks to cultivate an augmented reality ecosystem by developing metaverse platforms, fostering metaverse companies, and aiding their international expansion.

The expo will host exhibits centered around four key topics: metanomics, digital twins, education, and NFTs. Attendees will explore innovative business models, learn about the replication of physical objects in the virtual realm, discover the potential of the metaverse in reshaping educational approaches, and understand the role of non-fungible tokens in establishing digital ownership.

Side events to support businesses

In addition to the main exhibits, the expo will host various side events such as export and investment counseling sessions, new product presentations, and seminars. In collaboration with the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), a consultation program will be offered to encourage overseas buyers to engage with Korean companies. This program aims to support Korean businesses in promoting their products and services overseas, as well as connecting them with new buyers and investors who can contribute to their growth and expansion.

Previously known as the Seoul VR-AR Expo, this event has been an annual feature since 2018, with VR representing virtual reality and AR representing augmented reality. In line with evolving industry trends, the event was rebranded to the “Metaverse Expo” in 2022. This year’s event will mark its sixth running, further cementing its role as a beacon for developments in the rapidly advancing metaverse landscape.

He acknowledged the firm’s successful track record of supporting innovative and disruptive companies and considered it an honor to be part of such an organization.Photo by Marten Bjork on UnsplashCoinbase exited JapanKitazawa’s tenure at Coinbase Japan came to an end earlier this year, coinciding with Coinbase’s decision to exit the Japanese market due to prevailing “market conditions.” His appointment at Eight Roads Ventures indicates the increasing interest and involvement of Fidelity, the firm’s backer, in the cryptocurrency space.Fidelity has been making significant strides in the crypto industry. EDX Markets, a crypto exchange backed by Fidelity, recently announced its launch despite regulatory challenges from the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and a bearish market environment.TradFi heavyweight in cryptoFidelity is probably the standout heavyweight firm from traditional finance which has stepped foot in the crypto space from early on. It has done so through Fidelity Digital Assets, its crypto arm. The subsidiary company quietly rolled out its trading platform this year, providing millions of users with commission-free trading of bitcoin and ether. Additionally, Fidelity has been expanding its crypto research team, demonstrating its commitment to the industry.Headquartered in Bermuda, Eight Road Ventures positions itself as a global venture capital firm that helps entrepreneurs scale. It backs and partners with game-changing technology and healthcare companies, with a presence in China, Europe, India, and Japan.Eight Roads has also been actively investing in various crypto startups, including Fireblocks and Kaiko. Kitazawa’s appointment is expected to bring significant value to the firm’s portfolio, leveraging his knowledge and insights gained from working in the cryptocurrency sector.Originally known as Fidelity Ventures, Eight Roads Ventures has been involved in investments since 1969, initially operating out of Boston. Recently, it launched a $350 million technology investment fund in China and a $250 million healthcare and life sciences fund in India, demonstrating an interest in pursuing emerging opportunities in Asia.Shifting strategic focus overseasWith the addition of Nao Kitazawa as a venture partner, Eight Roads Ventures reinforces its position as a leading investment firm with a keen interest in the evolving landscape of fintech, Web3, and cryptocurrencies. It’s likely that the firm recognizes what way the regulatory winds are blowing, and with that, it’s bringing on board someone of Kitazawa’s caliber, with expertise outside of the US.Against the backdrop of a currently adverse regulatory environment in the US, earlier this month US VC giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) opened its first international office in London, in what many perceived to be a move towards a more regulatory progressive environment relative to the emerging digital assets sector.

Leading Chinese gaming company lines up $100M crypto investmentAs yet another indicator of the rising trend of institutional crypto investments, China’s premier board and card game company, Boyaa Interactive, has unveiled plans to invest up to $100 million in cryptocurrency assets, with a focus on Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).News of Boyaa’s plans emerged following a disclosure from the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, which stated that the company will distribute notices regarding its crypto investment plans during an extraordinary general meeting (EGM). The relevant details are expected to have been supplied to shareholders on or before Nov. 30. The company has emphasized its intention to ensure transparency while adhering to listing rules throughout this process.Photo by Traxer on UnsplashDigital asset acquisition over a 12-month periodThe decision to delve into the world of cryptocurrencies aligns with Boyaa Interactive’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the evolving Web3 landscape, as highlighted by the company’s board of directors. The proposal outlines a comprehensive strategy to acquire the assets over a 12-month period, pending approval at the upcoming EGM.The planned acquisition involves allocating approximately $90 million equally between Ethereum and Bitcoin. The remaining $10 million is earmarked for stablecoins Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC). Boyaa Interactive asserts that the actual acquisitions will depend on open market conditions, with a commitment not to pay premiums exceeding 10% of prevailing market prices. Funding for this initiative will be sourced from the company’s existing cash reserves. The board will play a crucial role in determining the specific cryptocurrencies to acquire, their allocation ratios and the optimal timing for purchase. The emphasis is on prudent risk management, aligning with Boyaa’s business development strategies.Diversification strategyThe company justifies its choice of Bitcoin and Ethereum by citing their alignment with its long-term development goals. In the document, Boyaa Interactive highlights the importance of investing in cryptocurrencies with robust market liquidity and substantial market values. Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC, and USDT, chosen for their high market liquidity, align seamlessly with Boyaa’s strategic vision. In its stock exchange filing, it justifies these plans on the basis of a desire to diversify its holdings. The document reads:”[The] purchase of cryptocurrencies is also an important arrangement for the Group’s asset allocation, as allocating part of the Group’s idle reserve funds in cryptocurrencies can serve as a diversification to holding cash in treasury management, and a measure to balance investment risks and returns.”Growing asset acceptanceThe move into the cryptocurrency market comes at a time when institutional investors are increasingly flocking to major assets like BTC and ETH. Reports indicate significant inflows of institutional funds into these cryptocurrencies, setting the stage for what appears to be an extended bull market.Boyaa first showed an interest in holding crypto on its balance sheet back in August when it proposed allocating $5 million towards cryptocurrency investment. The company following up with a $100 million investment serves as a testament to the growing acceptance and integration of cryptocurrencies within mainstream business strategies.

Incheon City to leverage blockchain for construction transparency

Incheon City to leverage blockchain for construction transparencyIn response to growing concerns among Koreans over recent apartment complexes built with missing reinforcing bars and unauthorized materials, the city of Incheon is turning to blockchain technology to tackle these issues.Incheon City revealed on Thursday (local time) that it has submitted proposals for public sector blockchain projects offered by the Ministry of Science and ICT. This move aligns with the city’s goal of establishing itself as a blockchain hub. By partnering with both the public and private sectors, the city aims to provide beneficial services for its citizens. This year, the Ministry of Science and ICT will gauge interest across government agencies, municipalities and public institutions for six projects, with a combined budget of KRW 10 billion ($7.5 million). In 2024, they plan to select project implementers through a bidding process. The goal is to identify public service projects where the application of blockchain technology can offer significant benefits.Photo by C Dustin on UnsplashBlockchain-driven construction oversightIn October, Incheon submitted proposals for two blockchain projects. First, it introduced a “safety certification” service to promote transparency at construction sites. This service will harness blockchain-driven integrated control technology to transparently manage apartment complex constructions. It will utilize technologies like closed-circuit television (CCTV), Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to oversee the presence of authorized personnel and track the use of approved materials. The city felt the need for this service after observing the prevalent issues with missing reinforcing bars in newly constructed flat-plate structure apartment complexes and incidents of forgery and counterfeiting of material certificates.Blockchain and eco-friendly membershipAnother project Incheon has proposed is an integrated membership service centered on eco-friendly practices, with the goal of encouraging resource recycling.Incheon City currently runs recycling shops and automated recycling machines across its counties and districts to foster recycling habits. However, with different locations necessitating different apps, the city is aiming to consolidate these into a single platform. Additionally, it intends to leverage blockchain technology to enable citizens to verify their environmental contributions.Lee Nam-joo, Head of Incheon’s Future Industry Bureau, said that how technology should be used is self-evident. He emphasized the city’s dedication to introducing tangible services that address societal challenges and enhance public safety and convenience through the application of digital technology in public services and industrial sites.
