Mitsui & Co. Digital Asset Management (Mitsui & Co. DAM) has unveiled Alterna, a novel platform designed to offer retail investors the chance to invest in real-world assets (RWAs). The service launched on Monday following receipt of the necessary regulatory approvals.

RWA-backed security tokens

Alterna enables users to conveniently invest in RWAs that generate stable rental income and other returns. RWAs encompass a wide range of assets, including large-scale real estate properties and infrastructure such as logistics facilities and power plants. By offering security tokens, Alterna opens the door to previously out-of-reach investment opportunities, allowing individuals to invest with a minimum of 100,000 yen. This new service represents an exciting alternative for individuals traditionally more comfortable with cash savings.

The first investment opportunity on the platform will be “Stage Grand Nihonbashi Ningyocho,” a residential building located in the Nihonbashi district. The application begins on June 2.

The platform’s name, Alterna, emphasizes its role as an alternative investment service, offering a fresh approach distinct from conventional options such as bank deposits, stocks, and investment trusts.

More effective portfolio management

Compared to traditional investment types like stocks and bonds, RWAs offer unique risk-return characteristics. With RWA-backed investments, investors can potentially achieve more effective portfolio management. These alternative assets have been garnering interest from institutional investors as well.

The Japanese Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF), the world’s largest institutional investor, has been investing in alternative assets since 2014. To pursue yields, the GPIF has been expanding its investment portfolio in real assets like real estate and infrastructure.

Easy investment with smartphones

Traditionally, retail investors encountered difficulties investing in large-scale real estate and infrastructure assets. Mitsui & Co. DAM aims to establish an environment where such investments can be made easily via security tokens using smartphones.

Interest in Alterna has been substantial even before its official launch, with over 10,000 pre-registrations recorded earlier this month.

Huobi Co-Founder Acquires 10 Million CRV Tokens

Huobi Co-Founder Acquires 10 Million CRV TokensJun Du, Chinese Co-Founder of Seychelles-headquartered global crypto exchange Huobi, has recently completed the purchase of 10 million curve tokens (CRV) from Curve founder Michael Egorov.Photo by Growtika on UnsplashCurve protocol loan exposureThe transaction amounted to $4 million and is part of Egorov’s ongoing efforts to mitigate his at-risk loan exposure, a further consequence of last week’s $52 million hack of the Curve DeFi protocol.Initially, Du expressed his interest in acquiring 10 million CRV tokens at the prevailing rate of $0.40. This price aligned with multiple over-the-counter (OTC) agreements between Egorov and various cryptocurrency individuals. According to a report by The Block, Du later confirmed the purchase through a Twitter direct message, revealing that he had chosen to lock up the acquired tokens as veCRV. This lock-up mechanism grants voting rights within the Curve platform while requiring the tokens to remain locked for a specified duration.“I intend to uphold this lock-up for at least a year, with optimism for continuous improvements within the Curve ecosystem,” Du stated, highlighting his commitment to the project’s long-term growth. On his Twitter account, Du emphasized his unwavering support for Curve, drawing parallels to his past backing of BendDAO during a liquidity crisis. He clarified: “Challenges faced now are transient, and collective support will foster a stronger industry.”Alongside being a Co-Founder at Huobi, Du holds the positions of CEO at New Huo Tech, a digital asset service platform, and Co-Founder and General Partner (GP) at the Web3 fund ABCDE.Ongoing token sell-offIn actively managing liquidation risk, Egorov is persistently offloading CRV tokens to bolster his loan position, given his significant exposure. He has utilized multiple DeFi lending platforms to secure loans, predominantly employing CRV tokens as collateral to borrow stablecoins. His borrowing activity on platforms like Aave alone has involved $56 million in stablecoins against $149 million worth of CRV collateral.Egorov’s health ratings on these platforms have improved recently, hovering around 1.67 or higher. Nonetheless, there remains a lingering risk associated with potential liquidation of his positions if CRV’s price were to dip substantially. This could potentially lead to bad debt scenarios for the platforms, particularly due to the substantial proportion of CRV supply involved.Sales of 72 million CRVEgorov’s token sales have amounted to 72 million CRV, according to Nansen analyst Sandra Leow. Notable recipients of these tokens include Tron Founder Justin Sun, crypto trader “DCFGod,” and Andrew Kang, Co-Founder of Mechanism Capital.Aave Chan Initiative, an entity tied to the Aave protocol, has proposed that the Aave treasury allocate funds to purchase up to $2 million worth of CRV tokens. The intention is to lock up these tokens as veCRV for an extended period, potentially up to four years. This move is aimed at further reinforcing the stability of CRV’s market dynamics.

MAS and NY Fed Publish Report on CBDC Cross-Border Payments

MAS and NY Fed Publish Report on CBDC Cross-Border PaymentsNew York’s Federal Reserve Bank and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) have collaborated on an endeavor titled “Project Cedar Phase II x Ubin+,” examining the use of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) for wholesale cross-border payments using one or more vehicle currencies. The joint effort has culminated in the publication of a report detailing their findings and results. Commenting on the initiative, MAS Managing Director Leong Sing Chiong stated:“The Cedar x Ubin+ experiment envisages a future digital currency landscape where central banks can enable interoperability of wholesale CBDCs to facilitate more efficient cross-border payment flows including for less liquid currencies, without requiring a common infrastructure.”Photo by NASA on UnsplashExploiting positive DLT characteristicsSpecifically, the New York Innovation Center (NYIC) of the NY Fed was the entity that contributed directly towards the research project. The work built on previous phases of Project Cedar. The objective was to explore perceived advantages of digital ledger technology (DLT) such as reduced settlement risk and reduced settlement time, in the context of cross-border payments. The conventional system primarily uses the SWIFT financial messaging network. The approach is highly inefficient. It’s time-consuming and needlessly ties capital up in vostro and nostro accounts (accounts held for another entity from an account another entity holds). Tying up capital proves to be a liquidity headache for corporations and any business entity that gets involved with international trade settlement.Smart contracts and off-chain messagingAgainst that backdrop, the project team was focusing on harnessing the ability to effect atomic or real-time settlement using DLT. Having commenced the work in November, the project team decided to rely on hashed timelock smart contracts in order to bridge distinct ledgers, so as to effect cross-currency and cross-border transactions.According to the report, the proposed system also relied on off-chain messaging functionality. Cross-border trade settlement often involves a number of stakeholders. Off-chain messaging can be beneficial in disseminating information relative to the process to all stakeholders. The researchers found that each simulated payment scenario achieved end-to-end settlement in under thirty seconds on average, realizing the goal of near real-time settlement. In turn, that speed of settlement meant that stakeholders could be notified of payment finality within a matter of seconds. Certainty of settlement, and thus reduction in counterparty risk was achieved by simulating atomic settlement, such that transactions only settled if all legs in the cross-currency payment chain executed successfully. From the point of view of interoperability and autonomy, the experiment demonstrated the ability to safely execute across multiple ledgers without the need to involve a centralized clearing authority or the establishment of a shared central network. The Bank of International Settlement (BIS) recently highlighted the finding that on a daily basis, $2.2 trillion of foreign exchange transactions don’t use a payment versus payment (PvP) settlement mechanism. PvP is a less risky form of settlement where two currency legs are exchanged simultaneously. Singapore is more exposed than most in this regard. Therefore, the use of DLT to counteract that risk in line with the experiment’s findings would be a progressive step.

Initially, availability of the facility will be confined to professional investors in Hong Kong. Hong Kong residents with an investment portfolio valued above 8 million Hong Kong dollars ($1 million) and corporate entities with assets in excess of 40 million Hong Kong dollars ($5 million) qualify within the definition of accredited investors. Once it gains the relevant regulatory approval, Tiger Brokers intends to extend the service to retail investors. The company also outlined that it is considering adding cryptocurrency spot withdrawals and deposits as features within the new service offering. Zeng Qingfei, Chief Financial Officer of Tiger International, expressed the company's pride in leading the charge in virtual asset trading services.
