Hong Kong’s GSBN Takes Lead in Blockchain Logistics

In recent years, the logistics industry has seen an increase in the use of blockchain technology to streamline supply chains and provide greater transparency to customers. While some major players, like Danish firm Maersk, have terminated their blockchain-based platforms, others are bullish on the long-term potential of the technology.

A blockchain-based shipping platform

One such player is the Hong Kong-based Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), a nonprofit consortium focused on blockchain trade applications. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, GSBN operates one of the world’s largest platforms as an alternative to Maersk’s TradeLens tool. Since launching its blockchain-based shipping platform in 2021, GSBN has partnered with major shipping companies and terminal operators such as Cosco, Orient Overseas Container Line, Hapag-Lloyd, Hutchison Ports, SPG Qingdao Port, PSA International, Shanghai International Port Group, and Cosco Shipping Ports.

The platform, based on a permissioned blockchain with strong data governance, allows only authorized parties to contribute and consume shipping-related data. The organization believes that blockchain is a crucial logistics tool in the long term, and its adoption may take another decade.

 

Blockchain inevitable amid continued digitization

GSBN CEO Bertrand Chen is confident in the potential of blockchain technology, saying that global trade will not continue to rely on “pen and paper” by 2032. He believes that blockchain has the potential to help the industry transform in response to supply issues triggered by events such as COVID-19.

“Because of COVID-19, because you have to change the process, I think this is one of the regular use cases of blockchain” . . . “Probably that’s better than NFTs of digital art. NFTs of documents for global trade — this will be the real killer use case.”

While Chen acknowledges that China has taken the lead in blockchain logistics due to its significant investment in the industry, he believes that GSBN has global ambitions and is working to attract more European shipping lines. The nonprofit even hopes to onboard Maersk one day, but Chen admits that such a scenario “may be slightly challenging.”

 

Emerging Web3 hub

Hong Kong has also emerged as a major hub for Web3 and cryptocurrency, with the local government taking action to adopt clear industry regulations. Despite a blanket ban on crypto in China, some Chinese government-related firms have reportedly been growing interested in crypto investment, with state-owned firms like insurer CPIC launching crypto-related funds in early April.

Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize global trade and supply chain management, providing greater transparency and efficiency. However, widespread adoption may still be years away, and companies will need to navigate regulatory and technical challenges to fully leverage the benefits of blockchain.

While some logistics firms may have terminated their blockchain-based projects, others like GSBN remain optimistic about the potential of blockchain technology in global trade. With major shipping partners and terminal operators already onboard, GSBN has a solid foundation to build on as it continues to attract more players to its platform. As the world becomes increasingly digitized, blockchain may be a crucial tool for the logistics industry to transform and adapt to new challenges.

The news of the possible sale had a significant impact on the company’s stock, which plummeted by over 22% to HK$3.35 the following day.BC Technology Group, which has been listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange since 2012, is the parent company of OSL. The reports hinted at the possibility of selling off parts of the business, citing undisclosed sources.In response to these rumors, BC Technology Group issued a formal statement to clarify the situation, deeming the article “factually inaccurate and highly misleading.” It vehemently refuted any intention to sell OSL, a key player in the cryptocurrency exchange sector.First licensed exchangeOSL was the first cryptocurrency exchange to be licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) in Hong Kong in 2020, initially operated under a voluntary scheme and was limited to serving professional investors. However, the recent licensing requirement broadened its scope, allowing it to cater to retail investors as well, including popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.Both OSL and HashKey had their licenses upgraded this year, enabling them to serve retail investors as per the new policy. However, the reception to this new regulatory framework has been somewhat lukewarm, with only five local exchanges applying for the new virtual asset trading platform (VATP) license. The SFC had to publish a list of applicants following a financial scandal involving the JPEX crypto exchange, which led to over 2,500 complaints and losses totaling approximately HK$1.5 billion.The backdrop of this unfolding situation is Hong Kong’s efforts to establish itself as a significant virtual asset hub. The city announced its ambition to transform into a hub for digital assets a year ago, drawing considerable attention from cryptocurrency exchanges. These efforts included implementing new regulations in June that mandated licensing for cryptocurrency exchanges.Several companies with connections to Hong Kong and mainland China have expressed their intent to obtain a license, potentially taking advantage of Hong Kong’s favorable stance toward virtual assets when compared to mainland China’s strict regulations.High compliance costsNonetheless, high compliance costs in Hong Kong continue to pose a barrier, potentially preventing the city from becoming the primary base of operations for crypto businesses. Industry insiders estimate that the cost of compliance from start to finish can be as high as HK$60 million for a company. Firms have reported that obtaining a trading license in Hong Kong can involve an outlay of between HK$20 million and HK$200 million.As per BC Technology Group’s mid-year report, the company reported a net loss of HK$94.7 million in the first half of 2023. This marked a notable improvement compared to the HK$312.1 million in losses during the same period the previous year. OSL remains a significant source of income for the company.

Singapore’s Web3 sector hopes for budget measures to grow talent pool

As Singapore prepares for the unveiling of its 2024 Budget, the city-state’s Web3 community is amplifying its call for crucial government backing. That’s according to a recent report by The Straits Times. The plea from Singaporean firms revolves around two pivotal areas: one, nurturing a proficient talent pool well-versed in blockchain technology; and, in addition to that, having a strength and depth in cybersecurity, so as to fortify defenses against cyber threats.Photo by David Pardo Bernal on UnsplashUrgent need for Web3 talentSome time ago, stakeholders in Singapore set out their stall in terms of the ambition of firmly establishing the city-state as a global hub for Web3 development. It’s off to a good start with many notable crypto and Web3 companies having established themselves in Singapore. However, broadening that industry hub to the fullest extent will involve overcoming the significant hurdles hindering the growth trajectory of Singapore’s Web3 sector. Top of the list is the scarcity of skilled professionals in the blockchain domain. Danny Lim, a core contributor at MarginX, a decentralized exchange, stressed the pressing demand for seasoned developers. Lim underscored the necessity of supporting Web2 developers transitioning into Web3 realms, especially those grappling with job displacement, to solidify Singapore’s status as a nucleus for groundbreaking blockchain ventures. Elaine Zhu, the general manager of the Asian division of blockchain infrastructure firm Parity Technologies, emphasized the critical need for blockchain education, expressing apprehension over the dwindling influx of new developers. In citing a recent report by crypto-focused venture capital firm Electric Capital which quantified developer activity across Web3, Zhu noted that the number of experienced developers in Singapore remains healthy. However, the report found that the number of newly qualified developers dropped by 52 percent last year. Bolstering cyber defensesAdditionally, the industry is clamoring for fortified cyber defenses to shield against the escalating threat landscape targeting digital assets. This focus on security underscores the broader challenge of ensuring the secure proliferation of Web3 technologies and digital currencies within Singapore’s technological ecosystem. A report by Singapore-based blockchain security firm Beosin last year found that exit scams are a growing concern in the crypto-sphere. At the end of last month, the Singapore Police Force, alongside the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), issued an advisory in order to raise awareness regarding crypto-centric cyber attacks. Ong Chengyi, representing Chainalysis, hailed Web3 as pivotal for long-term growth and advocated for sustained governmental support to enhance the sector’s capability in mitigating risks using advanced technological solutions. Ong remarked:“We hope to see more public-private collaboration to bolster Singapore’s defences against crypto crime and cyber threats more generally, through the utilization of data and technology.” Angela Ang of TRM Labs echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the imperative for heightened regulatory support to nurture the expansion of digital assets. Ang stated:“To deliver clarity to businesses at scale, whether it’s through licensing decisions or implementation guidance, the Government must invest in both human capital and technology throughout the regulatory process.”

OSL set to acquire Indonesia’s Evergreen Crest

OSL Group, a publicly-listed digital asset and blockchain platform company headquartered in Hong Kong, is set to acquire Indonesia’s Evergreen Crest Holdings.Photo by Kelly Sikkema on UnsplashAs the proposed acquisition of Evergreen Crest, a business that includes a virtual assets exchange platform, will involve a share transaction, OSL filed details of the acquisition with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on June 2. OSL will take a 90% stake in Evergreen Crest in return for $15 million worth of consideration shares, which will be issued by OSL to the seller. This share issuance will account for 1.48% of the total issued shares in the company. Once the acquisition goes through, Evergreen Crest will become a subsidiary of OSL Group, with Evergreen’s financial results consolidated into the overall financial statements of OSL going forward.  ‘Strategic benefits’The filing suggests that OSL management believe that the acquisition “will bring substantial strategic benefits to the Group,” as it opens up access for the company to the Indonesian digital asset market. The company is optimistic about the outlook for the Indonesian crypto market. It stated: “Indonesia possesses key attributes conducive to growth in this sector, including a substantial and youthful demographic, robust economic growth fundamentals, and a rapidly increasing rate of cryptocurrency adoption.” Acquiring licensesOne interesting aspect of the acquisition is that Evergreen Crest has acquired the requisite licensing to operate within the Indonesian market. Those cryptocurrency and futures trading licenses are likely to be of significant value to OSL as it means that through the acquisition, OSL can now enter the Indonesian market in a fully compliant manner. Using the existing compliant platform, OSL intends to expand the range of services offered within the Indonesian market. It indicated that it would do so in respect of payment finance (PayFi) and tokenized real-world asset (RWA)-related products and services, subject to acquiring the necessary licensing. OSL is encouraged by the opportunity that exists within Indonesia as far as tokenized RWAs are concerned. It claimed that the country has already demonstrated significant tokenized RWA-related activity. PT Multikripto Exchange Indonesia (also known as Koinsayang), the exchange business owned by Evergreen Crest, was awarded a virtual asset trading license by the Indonesian regulator, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), in March. At the time, the exchange outlined that it intended to expand its service reach, while creating a better trading experience for users located within Indonesia and overseas. In September 2024, the exchange was awarded a license to offer crypto asset perpetual futures contracts by Indonesia’s Commodity Futures Trading Supervisory Agency (Bappebti).  OSL expanding its reachOSL appears to be making a concerted effort to expand beyond its Hong Kong base. In February it acquired CoinBest, a Japanese crypto exchange, rebranding the business as OSL Japan. At the time it was reported that the company was also looking at opportunities to expand in European markets. OSL was amongst the first digital asset exchange platforms to be licensed in Hong Kong, receiving Type 1 and Type 7 licenses from the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) in December 2020.
