Samjong KPMG and Xangle to explore on-chain data for crypto accounting

Samjong KPMG, the South Korean branch of accounting giant KPMG, is set to collaborate with digital asset data research platform Xangle to conduct a joint study focused on discovering different ways to apply on-chain data in the realm of cryptocurrency accounting. That’s according to a report by local news outlet The Korea Economic Daily.

On-chain data encompasses all transaction records found on a blockchain. This type of data enables real-time verification of transactions, benefiting from the blockchain’s transparency and decentralized framework. Despite these advantages, the complexity of accessing and interpreting on-chain data is often seen as a barrier to entry, requiring specialized knowledge.

Crypto accounting and tax filing

The partnership between the two entities is poised to tackle challenges in the crypto sector faced by enterprises. Samjong KPMG will use this collaboration to improve their cryptocurrency consulting services, offering solutions in areas like virtual asset issuance, asset management and disclosure, internal controls and the accounting and tax filing complexities associated with cryptocurrencies.

 

ERP solutions for virtual assets

Meanwhile, Xangle will have the opportunity to gain insights into the practical needs and concerns of businesses in relation to on-chain data as the company is currently developing enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions for virtual assets. The joint effort will enhance Xangle’s ability to align technical data with real-world business applications.

Park Sung-bae, a Partner at Samjong KPMG, commented on this development, stating that the accounting firm plans to utilize the outcomes of their joint study with Xangle to address the uncertainties surrounding virtual asset disclosure requirements. This initiative is aimed at improving accounting transparency within South Korea’s cryptocurrency market.

Lee Hyun-woo, Co-CEO of Xangle, highlighted that the company has concentrated on establishing the necessary infrastructure for processing on-chain data and conducting research to deepen their understanding of it. He added that their latest collaboration with Samjong KPMG will enhance Xangle’s expertise in the areas of cryptocurrency taxes and accounting. Lee underlined the platform’s commitment to streamlining the accounting processes related to virtual assets, viewing it as an initial step towards facilitating broader Web3 adoption.

These included UNOPND, a venture division of Web3 venture capital firm Hashed; Naver D2SF; CJ Investment and Futureplay.Digital photo cards and tokensDoubling as an entertainment agency, Modhaus operates Cosmo, an app that empowers fans to play a role in their favorite artists’ operations. Through Cosmo, fans can purchase digital photo cards, earning tokens in return. These tokens then allow fans to vote on various aspects of their artists’ activities. The use of blockchain technology ensures that all votes are transparently and securely recorded, boosting the fan-artist relationship.Sfermion’s general partner, Dan Patterson, expressed enthusiasm about their investment in Modhaus, explaining that it “has innovatively bridged the K-pop fandom with both tangible and digital realms through NFTs. He referred to the achievement of girl group TripleS, which has garnered 1.74 million subscribers on YouTube since its debut in February of this year, as an example of what they envision for Cosmo. He suggested that Cosmo has the potential to evolve into a platform akin to LinkedIn or Kickstarter within the K-pop sector, aiming to maximize the value and reach of artists.Deepening artist-fan connectionsModhaus seeks to use the funds raised from this recent investment round to advance its Cosmo platform. This improvement aims to deepen the connections between fans and artists, providing fans with more opportunities to actively engage with and contribute to their favorite idol groups.At the helm of Modhaus are co-founders Jaden Jung and Kwanghyun Joseph Baek. Jung brings over two decades of experience as a producer at JYP Entertainment and Woollim Entertainment. Baek, on the other hand, has a background as the Chief Operating Officer at Playlist Originals, a digital content studio, and as a consultant at Bain & Company.Their team also includes Chief Product Officer Park Jae-hyun, formerly Product Owner at Viva Republica, the fintech company behind the internet-only bank Toss. Chief Creative Officer Kim Jong-soo has a history in the music industry as well, having produced girl groups like Dreamcatcher and Dal Shabet. Chief Business Officer Lee Gyu-hwa comes from MyMusicTaste, a K-Pop platform, while Chief Financial Officer Yang Ji-eun brings her experience from venture capital firm NCORE Ventures.

Bithumb and Korbit Struggle to Gain Traction Despite Zero Trading FeesSouth Korean cryptocurrency exchanges Bithumb and Korbit have recently eliminated trading fees, but their bold decision hasn’t yielded much results. Bithumb was the first to implement this change and attracted users for about a week, but it is now seeing a loss in market share. On October 26, Korbit’s daily trading volume represented 0.19% of the total trading volume among South Korea’s top five crypto exchanges (Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax). This figure marked a 0.14 percentage point increase compared to the 0.05% recorded on October 19. Korbit had implemented a zero trading fee policy at 9 a.m. (KST) on October 20. Additionally, they launched a promotion offering KRW 5,000 ($3.69) worth of bitcoin to users who transferred virtual assets totaling KRW 1 million or more from Travel Rule-compliant exchanges to Korbit. While the promotion did contribute to Korbit’s market share, it still remains below 1%.Bithumb’s performance showed some improvement, albeit briefly. As of October 26, Bithumb’s market share stood at 18%, marking a 4.7 percentage point increase from its 13.3% share on October 3, the day before it eliminated trading fees. However, it’s worth noting that its market share had reached almost 30% shortly after the promotion’s launch. This indicates that its strategy is losing efficacy over time.The less-than-enthusiastic results from their daring marketing endeavors can be attributed to their inability to draw in retail investors. To begin with, Upbit, the leading player in the market, had already been providing a relatively low fee of 0.05%. Furthermore, adapting to new user interfaces on these exchanges posed a challenge. Zero trading fees weren’t attractive enough for crypto investors to leave their current platforms.Trading volume mattersIn the case of Korbit, its lower trading volume was a disadvantage when it came to attracting users. On crypto exchanges, a higher trading volume typically translates to faster trade executions. As a result, users of Korbit might experience delays in executing trades at their preferred price.Jeong Hye-won, a research associate at crypto data analytics platform Xangle, told Chosun Biz that users on exchanges with lower trading volumes tend to experience slippages due to slower transaction speeds and sparsely populated order books. A slippage means the difference between the initially placed order price and the executed order price. Jeong further explained that Korbit’s zero trading fee policy didn’t have a significant impact because it offers fewer listed tokens compared to Upbit and Bithumb.There is speculation that the free-trading fee promotions introduced by Bithumb and Korbit, despite their revenue sacrifices, might conclude sooner than initially anticipated due to their perceived ineffectiveness. Bithumb derives 99.95% of its revenue from trading fees, while Korbit relies on trading fees for 99.79% of its income. An industry insider has commented that trading fees play a vital role in an exchange’s revenue, and given Bithumb’s reported loss in earnings during the second quarter, there are concerns about their capacity to sustain this strategy.
