Digitizing investments in art

Art-tech — a portmanteau of art and money management technology — refers to an investment method that involves purchasing or owning artworks as assets and earning profits from their sales.

“We are planning to launch our art-tech service next year, which will include exhibition recommendations, NFT ticketing and NFT art warranties to work in tandem with Shinhan Card’s payment services,” Park said. He also mentioned that it is currently undergoing legal evaluations.

Making event access more efficient

The inception of this upcoming release started in September, when Shinhan carried out a collaborative proof of concept (PoC) mechanism with two member startups from the ninth installment of its Future’s Lab startup acceleration program, Art Map and SnapTag.

Art Map is an art curation service put together by a team of database experts, software developers, artists, curators and designers that gathers metadata based on users’ preferences to recommend exhibitions and other art-related events for them to enjoy. On the other hand, SnapTag offers a variety of services based on its patented invisible watermark technology dubbed LAB Code. LAB Code is able to create an encrypted code by subtly converting image pixels of items like product packages, photos and illustrations and applying those files to printing or production processes without damaging or changing the original image.

Last month, Art Map and SnapTag used their respective technologies to work with Shinhan Card to issue and verify blockchain-based NFT tickets for the Sneakers Unboxed special exhibition held at the Sejong Museum of Art. Shinhan was responsible for minting NFTs as tickets for exhibitions promoted on Art Map’s platform, which could be issued and stored on the My NFT section on Shinhan’s mobile app ShinhanpLay. Visitors would then be able to use SnapTag’s digital check-in service Keefo to enter the exhibition.

This NFT ticketing system was proven to be a time-efficient and secure alternative to traditional ticketing procedures, which come with several inconveniences like long wait lines, delayed entry, illegal ticket resells and monopolization of customer data by major ticketing conglomerates. This is especially true for music performances by famous artists, where competition during ticket sales can become intense.

“Our NFT ticketing service will evolve into an art-tech management service that focuses on art,” Park explained. “Prestige Collection will leverage Art Map’s art concierge platform, SnapTag’s LAB Code technology and Shinhan Card’s My NFT service.”

Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund to invest in crypto

With Kazakhstan having recently indicated that it would create a national crypto reserve, the administrators of Kazakhstan’s existing sovereign fund now want to invest in crypto assets as well. According to a report published by Kursiv, a business media outlet covering Central Asia, the Kazakhstani authorities are planning to invest a portion of the country’s existing gold and foreign exchange reserves in crypto assets. The publication outlined that this was conveyed by Timur Suleimenov, governor of the National Bank of Kazakhstan, in a recent press conference. Photo by ANSAR ARCHITECTS on UnsplashFollowing an international investment trendHe stated that the country has a portfolio of alternative investments, which includes gold and foreign exchange reserves. Within that particular portfolio, more aggressive investment strategies are pursued in an effort to generate higher investment returns. He added: “We looked at the experience of the Norwegian fund, the American experience, and the experience of Middle East funds. They have certain investments in either crypto assets directly, or in ETFs and shares of companies that are closely related to crypto assets. They are very small.” In 2024, it emerged that Norway’s sovereign wealth fund had indirect exposure to 2,446 Bitcoin. By January of this year, the sovereign fund had increased its indirect exposure further through an investment in pioneering American Bitcoin treasury firm Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). In the Middle East, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), which manages the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, has been exposing the fund to Bitcoin indirectly through investments in BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), IBIT. Considering asset volatilityWhile moving towards a crypto investment within the alternative investments portfolio, Suleimenov struck a cautious note, stating: “This is not an easy question, so there is no need to rush here. Yes, such assets can bring high returns, but at the same time they are characterized by high volatility.” This latest development in Kazakhstan coincides with the release of a report by German multinational investment bank, Deutsche Bank. The research report has found that Bitcoin has reached a new all-time-high unit price amid a dramatic drop in the volatility of the leading digital asset when compared with times past.  The bank explained that this was a sign of a maturing market, while suggesting that Bitcoin’s volatility is likely to decline further as adoption grows. Reduced volatility is making crypto assets like Bitcoin more appealing to long-term capital allocators like sovereign wealth funds and pension funds. In an interview with Bloomberg back in May, Mike Novogratz, founder and CEO of American digital assets firm Galaxy Digital, said that he has had conversations with heads of large sovereign wealth funds that have said “if America is buying Bitcoin, we’re buying Bitcoin.”In March, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order setting out the establishment of a strategic Bitcoin reserve in the United States. In moving to establish a crypto reserve in Kazakhstan recently, Suleimenov suggested that international practice demonstrates that such a reserve may include confiscated crypto-assets, with Kazakhstan planning to proceed with the formation of the reserve on that basis.

Public Confidence in Crypto Wanes in Hong Kong Amid JPEX Scandal

Public Confidence in Crypto Wanes in Hong Kong Amid JPEX ScandalThe development of cryptocurrency in Hong Kong has been dented in terms of public sentiment following the JPEX cryptocurrency exchange scandal, according to a recent survey conducted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s (HKUST) business school.Photo by Alex Plesovskich on UnsplashA two-phase survey methodologyThe survey, the preliminary results of which were disclosed by the business school on Tuesday, aimed to gauge how public attitudes toward virtual assets had been affected by the JPEX scandal, which rocked the crypto community within the Chinese autonomous territory. While the survey is set to conclude on October 20, the preliminary findings have already revealed a noteworthy shift in public perception. Notably, 41% of respondents expressed a preference not to hold virtual assets, marking a 12-percentage-point increase from the earlier study conducted in May.Moreover, only 20% of respondents indicated a desire to hold virtual assets in the future, reflecting a five-percentage-point decrease compared to the previous survey. These findings suggest a growing skepticism among Hong Kong’s populace regarding the cryptocurrency industry.Post-JPEX public sentimentThe initial survey involved 5,700 participants aged 18 and above and was conducted between April 24 and May 23. Phase two of the survey commenced on September 28, approximately 11 days after the allegations against JPEX came to light. The results were compared to a similar survey conducted between April and May to assess the evolving sentiment. Between September 28 and October 5, phase two of the survey had compiled responses from 2,200 individuals.HKUST acknowledged that the second survey occurred in the “aftermath of an alleged financial fraud” involving a cryptocurrency platform but refrained from directly naming JPEX in the report.Professor Allen Huang, Associate Dean of HKUST’s business school, attributed the shift in sentiment to the recent financial scandal, which thrust the cryptocurrency industry into the spotlight. This heightened attention has led to a “more conservative investment appetite” among the public. He emphasized the need for greater educational initiatives to enhance public awareness and understanding of the risks and potential of this emerging field.HKUST’s business school stated that the survey’s primary objective was to assess the attitudes and viewpoints of Hong Kong’s residents regarding virtual asset investments, considering their experiences, intentions, and the regulatory safeguards in place.JPEX falloutThe JPEX scandal, which allegedly involved a $166 million fraud scheme, unfolded over several months before Hong Kong authorities publicly announced their investigation into the exchange. It forced local regulators to reassess the soundness of crypto trading-related regulatory measures applied within the Chinese autonomous territory. That reassessment led to regulators concluding that efforts needed to be intensified to combat unregulated platforms operating within Hong Kong. In response to the JPEX saga, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) established a cryptocurrency-focused working group earlier this month to combat illicit activities on cryptocurrency exchanges. The evolving sentiment in Hong Kong reflects the broader challenges and concerns surrounding the cryptocurrency industry. As regulatory scrutiny increases and major incidents like the JPEX scandal come to light, it’s clear that fostering public trust and understanding is a pressing priority for crypto businesses and the broader crypto community.

Parachain Fork Sees Transition to Enjin Blockchain

Parachain Fork Sees Transition to Enjin BlockchainEnjin, a Singapore-headquartered non-fungible token (NFT) platform, has announced its transition to a new mainnet named Enjin Blockchain, with the goal of further advancing Web3 adoption. As part of this transition, Enjin has forked its Polkadot parachain, Efinity, to the new blockchain. The project made the announcement via a blog post published to its website on Thursday.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashIntegrated functionalityAccording to the team at Enjin, the Enjin Blockchain distinguishes itself from other blockchain solutions by integrating functions such as NFT creation and transfer directly into the foundational code of the blockchain, eliminating the reliance on smart contracts. This integration aims to streamline and simplify the process of creating and transferring NFTs.In addition to this fundamental change, the Enjin Blockchain introduces several new features. One notable feature is “Fuel Tanks,” which enables developers to subsidize user transaction fees, making it more cost-effective for users to interact with the blockchain. Another feature is “Discrete Accounts,” which allows users to engage with blockchain-based projects without the need to download specific wallet software.Fork to Efinity MatrixchainAlongside the transition to the Enjin Blockchain, the team has also forked Efinity, the Polkadot parachain, to the new mainnet. This rebranded version will be known as the Efinity Matrixchain and will facilitate a smooth transition for existing users.Witek Radomski, the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Enjin, emphasized that the launch of the Enjin Blockchain aims to support creativity by making the creation and distribution of NFTs more accessible and affordable. Radomski stated: “Enjin Blockchain makes the creation and mass distribution of NFTs affordable and accessible to everyone. Our aim is nothing short of revolutionizing gaming, ownership, and online identity.”Enjin’s chief financial officer, Oscar Franklin Tan, expressed his belief that NFTs and digital ownership will be pivotal in the future of gaming, particularly with advancements in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality. Tan emphasized Enjin’s commitment to supporting this next wave of gaming and the resulting “explosion of content.”Enjin believes that it sets itself apart from the competition due to the fact that it’s built on top of the open-source Substrate framework, a mechanism that facilitates the development of customized blockchains that may be run on an entirely autonomous basis.Using this unique approach, Enjin Blockchain doesn’t depend upon the use of smart contracts. Instead, critical functions such as creating, using, and transferring NFTs are integrated directly into the core, foundational blockchain code.NFT lending stabilityIn related news, the stability of NFT lending has been aided by the use of blue-chip collateral. Paraspace, an NFT protocol, recently reported that despite facilitating NFT loans totaling over $280 million, it experienced no bad debt and only 16 NFT liquidations. This success can be attributed to the protocol’s requirement that only blue-chip NFTs can be used as collateral, ensuring the value and stability of the assets involved. As Enjin embraces its new mainnet and the Efinity Matrixchain, the platform positions itself as a key player in the evolving NFT and blockchain landscape. With a focus on accessibility, affordability, and the support of creative endeavors, Enjin aims to drive innovation in gaming, ownership, and online identity.
