Focusing on Southeast Asia

The Ethereum developer conference will be held in the Thai capital from Nov. 12 to 15. The decision signifies a broadened vision for the event, shifting from a city-focused approach to embracing the entire Southeast Asia region as the backdrop for this community gathering. To underscore the Foundation’s intent, it has renamed the event from Devcon 7 to "Devcon Southeast Asia."

Expressing enthusiasm about the potential and rapid growth of the Ethereum community in Southeast Asia, the Ethereum Foundation sees the scheduling of Devcon 7 for 2024 as an opportunity to deeply engage with local communities, providing meaningful support and empowerment. This shift aims to make Devcon 7 a more inclusive and regionally focused event, aptly named "Devcon Southeast Asia" to highlight its broader reach and impact.

There has already been a positive reaction from crypto community members in the region in response to the choice of Bangkok for the conference. Navaporn Nalita, the founder of Crypto City Connext in Thailand wrote that “Bangkok's collaborative ecosystem, welcomes Devcon 2024 with open arms (and open blockchains)! Thailand's vibrant dev scene is primed to ignite alongside the world's brightest minds.” In short order, community builders have been looking to make the most out of the opportunity.

Aligning with crypto growth potential

According to the blog post published by the Ethereum Foundation outlining the announcement, the choice of Bangkok as the host city aligns with the region's crypto adoption growth. Countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand have shown remarkable positions in the Global Crypto Adoption Index, underscoring the pivotal role of Southeast Asia in the global Ethereum landscape.

To support Ethereum events, grassroots communities and educational initiatives in Southeast Asia, the Ethereum Foundation (EF) initiated the Road to Devcon (RTD) Grants round on June 29. This grant round is specifically aimed at individuals in Southeast Asia actively building communities, developing educational activities, and contributing to the growth of the Ethereum ecosystem.

Encouraging smaller meet-ups over large events, the EF set the maximum grant at $1,000. The initiative aims to empower the Southeast Asian Ethereum community by providing support along the Road to Devcon.

In a recent Chainalysis research report, Vietnam has emerged as the leader in cryptocurrency adoption within Southeast Asia, claiming the top spot in the region and ranking third globally in the Global Crypto Adoption Index for 2023. This index considers transaction volumes, protocols, web traffic patterns and factors like population size and purchasing power.

The competition among Southeast Asian countries to establish themselves as crypto hubs is evident. Each nation adopts different regulatory approaches, with Singapore and Thailand implementing stricter measures.

There has been a steady stream of Ethereum developer-centric conferences in recent years. 2022 featured EthDenver, Avax Barcelona, Devconnect Amsterdam, Devcon Bogota and EthSF (San Francisco). EthDenver, EthCC Paris and Devconnect Istanbul followed in 2023.

As Devcon Southeast Asia approaches, the Ethereum Foundation anticipates fostering deeper connections and collaboration in this vibrant and evolving ecosystem.

Phoenix Group adjusts public trading launch date

Phoenix Group adjusts public trading launch dateWhile experiencing a considerable over-subscription during its pre-market sale on Nov. 21, Dubai-headquartered crypto mining firm Phoenix Group has had to announce a slight delay to its initial public offering (IPO) on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX).Photo by David Rodrigo on UnsplashAccounting for the UAE holiday scheduleIn an announcement published on Tuesday, Phoenix Group revealed that it would list its shares on Dec. 5 instead of the initially planned Dec. 4. The adjustment is attributed to the public holidays declared for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) National Day, celebrated on Dec. 2. The day marks the formation of the UAE, and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has designated Dec. 2, 3 and 4 as public holidays for the private sector.“To honor this occasion and ensure comprehensive participation in the IPO, Phoenix Group PLC has rescheduled its listing date to December 5th, 2023,” the announcement states.IPO oversubscriptionAs advised by the company earlier this month, Phoenix Group achieved a successful closure of its IPO on Nov. 18, experiencing an over-subscription of 33 times the available share offering. The offering of 907,323,529 shares witnessed overwhelming demand, with retail investors oversubscribing 180 times and professional investors contributing to a 22-fold over-subscription.Discussions regarding the IPO launch in the UAE have been underway since at least July of this year, although public knowledge of the company’s intentions only became known in recent weeks.Speaking about the objective of the recent public listing, the company’s co-founders, Bijan Alizadeh and Munaf Ali, wrote:“Our aim is to be able to help create a more resilient, inclusive and diversified global blockchain economy, and this IPO is just the first step towards achieving that goal.”725MW mining capacityThe UAE-based mining operator is in the process of developing one of the largest mining facilities in the Middle East. Founded in 2016, the firm now manages 725MW of mining capacity globally, with facilities in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the Middle East.In August, it emerged that Phoenix is a key stakeholder in the development of a $300 million 150MW mining farm project which will be located at the Green Data City in the Omani capital, Muscat.Abu Dhabi-based conglomerate International Holding Company (IHC) acquired a ten percent stake in Phoenix in October. Co-founder Bijan Alizadeh is also a co-founder of M2, an Abu Dhabi-based cryptocurrency exchange that recently received a Multilateral Trading Facility and custodian license from the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM).IPO activityComing off the back of a bear market, IPO activity has been scarce within the crypto space recently. That said, it emerged recently that South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb is working towards an IPO which it hopes to complete in the second half of 2025. Meanwhile, Ripple Labs has delayed its IPO plans due to regulatory challenges the company is currently dealing with in the U.S. Earlier this month, it emerged that USDC stablecoin issuer, Circle, is looking to launch an IPO in 2024.As Phoenix Group readies itself for public trading, the adjusted launch date aligns with the company’s strategy to maximize participation and capitalize on the UAE’s crypto-friendly environment.

Seoul Labs to build layer 2 blockchain mainnet using SASEUL

Seoul Labs to build layer 2 blockchain mainnet using SASEULSouth Korean blockchain solutions provider Seoul Labs announced Thursday (local time) that it will build a layer 2 mainnet utilizing the third-generation blockchain engine SASEUL. This comes in an effort to strengthen the scalability of the SASEUL network and improve capabilities for large-scale traffic processing. Layer 2 refers to a set of off-chain solutions built on top of a layer 1 network to reduce bottlenecks with scaling and data.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashScalability and stabilitySeoul Labs plans to actively utilize the mainnet’s core functions, such as its HAP-2 hypothesis acceptance verification algorithm and dual chain mechanism as well as its ability to solve storage space problems. In particular, the HAP-2 hypothesis acceptance verification algorithm is a more efficient method for generating blocks than the proof of Work (PoW) algorithm that is widely used in blockchain mainnets, significantly improving scalability.According to the company, the layer 2 mainnet will implement an approach to becoming a node on the network without a graphics processing unit (GPU).“By building the layer 2 mainnet, we will be able to build the SASEUL blockchain network into a stable and scalable platform,” said Dohee Jang, CEO of Seoul Labs.Multifaceted solutionThe project is also poised to become a solution to the excessive computing resources and electrical energy required to run blockchain networks that lead to environmental repercussions. In addition, the company is facilitating research and development for the implementation of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) into the global economy. Notably, the South Korean government is also planning to launch a CBDC pilot project by 2024.“Recently, central banks around the world have been promoting the integration of CBDCs, but they are facing various problems in terms of scalability and speed,” said an unnamed employee at ArtiFriends, the company behind the SASEUL mainnet. “Layer 2 mainnet is a stable and scalable platform suitable for CBDCs.”
