Interoperability with privacy

A ZK proof provides the ability for one party to cryptographically prove to another party that it possesses a certain piece of information without having to reveal the actual underlying information to the other party. Central to Polyhedra Network's product offering is its zkBridge protocol, a system facilitating trustless and efficient cross-chain infrastructure for both layer-1 and layer-2 interoperability.

The protocol empowers the receiving chain to verify specific state transitions on the sending chain. This approach ensures robust security without external assumptions, effectively reducing the costs associated with on-chain verification. Polyhedra Network made an initial impact in 2023 with the launch of the "zkBridge Mainnet Alpha."

That product enabled interoperability over 20 layer-1 and layer-2 blockchains, including well-known networks such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain and Arbitrum.

Distributed proof system

The innovative strides of Polyhedra Network, which was founded in the United States by James Zhang, Tiancheng Xie and Nikhil Shah, continued in 2023 with the introduction of deVirgo, a novel distributed proof system expediting proof generation. The deVirgo protocol also incorporates recursive proofs which trim on-chain proof verification costs associated with zkBridge.

Last month, Polyhedra Network unveiled its Bitcoin messaging protocol with zkBridge, ushering trustless interoperability into the Bitcoin ecosystem through the use of ZK-proof technology.

Asian backing

By championing entrepreneurs contributing to the blockchain industry's advancement, OKX Ventures is helping to build innovative companies, bringing global resources and historical experience to the forefront of blockchain projects.

It is one of many Asia-centric venture firms to do so. Polyhedra has secured backing from Hong Kong’s Animoca Brands and HashKey Group, Singapore’s UOB Venture Management, NGC Ventures, Signum Capital and Foresight Ventures, alongside KuCoin Ventures.

In an initial funding round in February 2023, the UC Berkeley team attracted $10 million in funding. By April, a pre-Series A round had raised a further $15 million.

Dora Yue, the founder of OKX Ventures, expressed their honor in participating in the investment in Polyhedra Network's interoperability infrastructure. Yue lauded the creativity demonstrated by Polyhedra Network's team in developing advanced ZK-proof mechanisms, emphasizing the balance achieved between ZK interoperability and scalability.

OKX Ventures, with an initial capital commitment of $100 million, is committed to supporting Polyhedra Network's vision of seamlessly connecting the Web2 and Web3 worlds, aiming to attract a more extensive user base to the industry.

As the investment arm of the global crypto exchange platform, it dedicates itself to exploring top-tier blockchain projects on a global scale. Its focus is on fostering cutting-edge blockchain technology innovation, aspiring to support the healthy development of the global blockchain space and investing in long-term structural value.

Korea’s FSC Embarks on Developing Regulatory Framework for VASPs

Korea’s FSC Embarks on Developing Regulatory Framework for VASPsThe South Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) has taken a step towards the development of a virtual asset regulation system by seeking external parties to undertake a research project in this area, according to local news agency News1.Photo by Joshua Miranda on PexelsSecond phaseEarlier this month, the National Assembly passed the Virtual Asset User Protection Bill, aimed at protecting investors and preventing unfair trading practices. This legislative accomplishment, scheduled to go effective in July next year, is referred to as the “first phase” of virtual asset regulations. Building upon this foundation, the FSC has now shifted its focus to the “second phase,” which involves the regulation of virtual asset service providers (VASPs).Regulating VASP operationsOne primary concern regarding VASPs is the potential for conflicts of interest arising from their involvement in the issuance and distribution of virtual assets. In response, the FSC is determined to design a regulatory framework that covers a wide range of virtual assets, including stablecoins, security tokens, and utility tokens. In addition to this, the FSC intends to establish a system that governs advisory and disclosure businesses, which will play a crucial role in disseminating information about asset prices and disclosures. Moreover, the regulatory system will include guidelines for holding parties accountable in case of incidents and for overseeing the operations of VASPs to maintain a safe and fair market environment. The FSC acknowledges the significance of aligning policies with international standards. To achieve this, the commission will conduct an examination of virtual asset regulatory approaches taken by different countries and international organizations. Through this study, the FSC aims to integrate global best practices and approaches into Korea’s own regulatory framework for virtual assets.Once the study is complete, the FSC has to report the result to the National Policy Committee of the National Assembly by July 2024 before the Virtual Asset User Protection Bill goes into effect.

Thailand counters cybercrime with tighter controls on foreign crypto P2P platforms

Thailand has taken steps to tighten controls on digital asset mule accounts and overseas crypto peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms in an effort to combat cybercrime.Photo by Growtika on UnsplashLegislative amendmentsOn April 8, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a local regulator, published a statement explaining that the Thai cabinet has passed a resolution approving a number of amendments to the Southeast Asian nation’s digital asset business law and its cybercrime law. The regulator asserted that the amendments are designed to “strengthen measures against cybercrime and mule accounts, enhancing the security of public financial transactions and improving the effectiveness of combating online scams.” The amendments won’t become effective until such time as they are published in the Government Gazette of Thailand, an official public journal that acts as a primary source for Thai law. Mule accountsOne aspect that has been addressed is the enhancement of measures taken in an effort to block digital asset mule accounts. Criminals utilize mule accounts in an effort to launder the proceeds of crime.  While this happens with conventional bank accounts, it is also now happening with digital asset exchange accounts and digital asset wallets. Accounts may have been established for legitimate purposes but later fall under the influence of criminals who utilize them for money laundering. According to a report by the Bangkok Post last month, the Thai SEC had been collaborating with the Thai Digital Asset Operators Trade Association (TDO) and digital asset businesses in order to formulate these new measures.  The standard was also established following consultation with the Bank of Thailand, the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, Central Investigation Bureau, the Anti-Money Laundering Office and the Thai Bankers' Association. It is hoped that these enhanced mechanisms will lead to earlier detection of unusual customer behavior, enabling the authorities to intervene at an earlier stage to block mule accounts.Going forward, the regulator will collaborate with the TDO in monitoring and evaluating implementation of the new measures. Individuals who allow their digital asset accounts to be used by criminals will face up to three years' imprisonment and a fine of up to 300,000 Thai baht ($8,765). Blocking P2P platformsAnother change is being implemented in respect of offshore crypto P2P platforms. The objective of that particular measure is to deter and prevent the use of such platforms by investors within Thailand.  It’s envisaged that the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society will now be enabled to move more swiftly in blocking website and application access to these foreign P2P platforms. Such offshore platforms will be deemed to be attempting to solicit local investors if they offer payment options in Thai baht, provide online services or applications using the Thai language or if they accept payments through Thai bank accounts. Earlier this month, Thai law enforcement raided five unlicensed crypto firms. The raid led to the arrest of 11 individuals, charged with illegally operating e-money services related to enterprises responsible for a combined $29 million turnover.
