Incentivized networking through ‘SocialFi’

Officially launched in April of this year, Sleek aspires to reshape human connections by simplifying networking, infusing a sense of fun and fostering productivity. The platform provides users with an expansive environment where they can exchange information, connect with new contacts and participate in incentivized networking through innovative Web3 social finance (SocialFi) business models.

In essence, SocialFi employs blockchain technology with the objective of monetizing social interactions. The concept has come to broader attention in recent months as a consequence of the emergence of Friend.tech, a novel way for creators to monetize content, by way of tokenizing attention. Sleek enables users to directly monetize their content and social capital, emerging as a new generation of creators within the Web3 landscape. Sleek Co-Founder Chase Guo explained to The Block how it differs from other Web3 social networks:

“Most of the time, this strategy [bootstrapping a platform using tokens or incentives] does not result in unique content generation and sustainable growth. People are here for the airdrop and leave once they cash out. Sleek took a very different approach — build a real use case first with die-hard fans.”

Sleek Card

At the forefront of Sleek’s offerings is its flagship product, Sleek Card, specifically designed to empower Web3 professionals in face-to-face networking. Each Sleek Card generates a blockchain wallet and a decentralized identity for users, streamlining the onboarding process into the Web3 space.

Utilizing NFC technology and a proprietary messaging bot, Sleek Card allows users to capture data and manage contacts, resulting in robust on-chain social graphs. Notably, Sleek Card has facilitated over 300,000 connections, establishing itself as a key player in the Web3 landscape. The platform has also formed strategic partnerships with prominent entities such as Solana Hacker Houses, Coinfest, Digital Art Fair and NFTNow, bringing innovative event experiences to life.

Both of the startup’s founders spoke about the body of work Sleek is involved in. Co-Founder Tania Tse stated:

“We are launching monetization models in our platform that are only possible through the blockchain, so talented creators from various verticals who don’t have a full team supporting them can earn sustainably.”

Chase Guo added: “Leveraging our own experiences and lessons learned, we are building applications alongside our users to power the future of Web3 social.”

Looking ahead, Sleek plans to unveil an open marketplace in the first half of 2024, empowering domain experts to become creators by tokenizing their knowledge into liquid and accessible assets. This strategic move aligns with Sleek’s vision for a more equitable, user-centric and transparent digital social landscape.

Broad industry backing

Sleek’s investor roster includes well-known names such as Shima Capital, Spartan Group, Symbolic Capital, Genblock Capital, Big Brain Holdings, Market Across, Emirates Consortium, Arkstream, Perridon, GBV and various angel investors. Notably, Binance Labs, the venture capital arm of Binance, invested in Sleek through the Binance Labs Incubation Program in 2022.

Anboto Labs Reveals $3M Funding and Platform Launch

Anboto Labs Reveals $3M Funding and Platform LaunchHong Kong-based crypto trade execution specialist Anboto Labs has successfully secured $3 million in funding and unveiled an institutional-grade non-custodial trading platform.Investors who participated in the funding round included Kronos Ventures, Cherry Crypto, Mechanism Capital, XBTO, and Singaporean digital assets financial services platform Matrixport, contributing to this funding round during the third quarter of this year. Anboto Labs, known for its crypto trading execution tools, has been on a steady growth trajectory, having raised $1.9 million last year, elevating its valuation to $35 million, according to Guillaume Forcade, the company’s co-founder.Photo by Csaba Nagy on PixabayCrypto trade executionFrom its inception, Anboto Labs has consistently generated revenue, and now it’s ready to introduce its execution platform to a broader audience of experienced traders. The public launch of the platform will enable Anboto to scale up to support thousands of traders simultaneously. The newly released platform underwent an extensive 18-month closed beta phase, during which it processed $4 billion in trading volume across 20 exchanges and blockchain networks. Anboto Labs is attempting to distinguish itself in the market with its execution algorithms, including TWAP, VWAP, and iceberg, which are designed to optimize pricing and execution quality.TWAP, or time-weighted average price, can be incorporated into a trading algorithm with a view towards optimizing a trade’s average price while executing the trade over a predefined time period. In recent days, the project’s Head of Quantitative Research, Suren Markosov, took to blogging site Medium to outline how Anboto’s TWAP algorithm is geared up to save on trading costs. According to Markosov, the firm’s approach could lead to traders saving between two and eight basis points in costs.VWAP, or volume-weighted average price, can be used to filter out the “noise” in the market to determine the real buy/sell price that exists within the market within a given period. Meanwhile, an iceberg order is executed such that it is sliced up into smaller orders. In this way, the impact cost of overall trade execution is minimized.Focus on securityAnboto Labs also places a strong emphasis on security. It allows users to sign up without the need for a time-consuming Know Your Customer (KYC) process, offering a streamlined experience. Additionally, the platform provides multi-factor authentication and the option to whitelist IP addresses, further enhancing security measures.Brett Sun, an investor with Cherry Crypto, took to X (formerly Twitter) to recognize Anboto’s platform launch. Sun stated:“Big strides from @guiviaje and the team at @anboto_labs. They’ve come out of beta to democratize access to professional-grade trading tools for all traders.”WOO Network integrationEarlier this week, Anboto announced the integration of Taipei-based liquidity provider WOO Network into its platform. Forcade said that the integration will enable the firm to offer even more efficient trading tools to its users. In the coming months, Anboto Labs plans to expand its trading features with the aim of democratizing access to institutional-grade execution tools for all crypto traders. With a track record and fresh funding behind it, Anboto Labs is setting itself up to potentially make a significant impact in the cryptocurrency trading space, offering traders the tools they need for success in the crypto market.

Regulator lifts investment cap for real estate-backed tokens in Thailand

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Thailand has made a significant adjustment to the rules governing digital token investments. The SEC has decided to eliminate the investment ceiling previously imposed on retail investors participating in initial coin offerings (ICOs) tied to real estate and infrastructure.Photo by Colton Duke on UnsplashFostering digital economy growth and developmentThe announcement, specifying the revised criteria, was officially published in the Royal Gazette, with the measure taking effect on Tuesday. This move allows retail investors greater access to ICOs involving tokens backed by real estate or linked to real estate revenues. The SEC emphasized that, in addition to ensuring appropriate investor protection, its role extends to encouraging the utilization of technology and innovation in fundraising. The objective is to foster sustainable growth in the capital market and support the development of the digital economy. Prior to this adjustment, retail investors faced a restriction of a 300,000 baht ($8,450) investment limit per offering concerning digital tokens backed by infrastructure or real estate. The SEC's decision to remove this limitation aligns with the goal of managing product risks effectively while promoting a more inclusive environment for retail investors in the realm of digital token investments. Facilitating custodial walletsFurthermore, the SEC is currently undertaking a review of criteria to facilitate the establishment of custodial wallet provider businesses for digital asset operators with common major shareholders. This initiative aims to enhance the regulatory framework and provide guidelines for businesses involved in digital asset storage. Custodial wallets will be permitted in Thailand if operated by publicly traded companies with experience in digital asset storage. All Thai citizens will have a touch point with digital wallets shortly under a government program, a $14 billion digital handout scheme, which has been approved to distribute digital currency to the public through digital wallets. DASP approvalsAs part of its supervisory role, the SEC will also be responsible for granting permissions to digital asset service providers (DASPs) to expand into new business lines. Digital asset operators seeking to diversify their operations are required to obtain approval from the SEC before proceeding. This measure is intended to ensure the effective oversight of such businesses and maintain the credibility of the digital asset industry by preventing illegal operations. It’s likely no coincidence that tokenized real estate is being embraced in Thailand, given the background of Thailand’s recently installed Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin. In 2021, Thavisin’s company played a role in funding crypto-friendly investment management firm XSpring Capital to the tune of $225 million. His firm also introduced a real estate-backed ICO in conjunction with XSpring. While Thailand’s SEC is moving forward with tokenized real estate, it doesn’t feel the same way about exchange-traded funds (ETFs). In the wake of the recent approval of spot bitcoin ETFs in the United States, the Thai SEC responded by stating that it currently has no plans to allow asset managers to launch similar products within the Thai market.

Hong Kong's VSFG eyes spot ether ETF application in Q2

Venture Smart Financial Holdings Ltd. (VSFG), a Hong Kong-based financial services firm, is strategically positioning itself to enter the growing cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund (ETF) market, with its latest reveal being an interest in launching a spot ETH ETF in Q2.Photo by Michael Förtsch on UnsplashIn a recent interview with The Block, VSFG Chairman Lawrence Chu revealed the company's plans to apply for a spot ether ETF in Hong Kong. Executing on that plan is contingent upon the successful launch and approval of its spot bitcoin ETF. Q1 launch for bitcoin ETFLast month, the firm disclosed that it is gearing up for a spot bitcoin ETF launch within the first quarter of this year. VSFG was the first to reveal such an intention within the ETF space in Hong Kong. However, competition is already starting to bubble, as subsequently, Chinese asset manager Harvest Fund announced that it has gone one better and actually filed an application for a spot bitcoin ETF product in the Chinese autonomous territory. Chu shared insights into the firm's current status, mentioning that VSFG is in the final phase of preparing its application for a spot bitcoin ETF to be submitted to the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission. He emphasized the rigorous regulatory discussions that precede such submissions in Hong Kong, characterizing the imminent application as being in the advanced stages, stating, “Submission [for application] is almost like when you're 95% there.” Chu acknowledged the importance of ongoing conversations with regulators, expressing readiness by stating, “but that really depends on the conversation we have with the regulator. We will be ready.” Competitive spotlight on ETF feesHighlighting the evolving landscape in Hong Kong, Chu noted that nearly 10 fund companies are exploring the launch of potential spot crypto ETFs in the city. That call echoes similar comments made recently by Livio Weng, CEO of digital assets firm HashKey. The prospect of a potential fee war among asset managers was also discussed, drawing parallels with developments observed in the U.S. bitcoin ETF market. That seems likely, given that downward pressure on spot bitcoin ETF fees in the United States has also spread to Europe where Invesco and WisdomTree have cut fees by 60% on similar products. Global ether ETPsWhile commentators such as Standard Chartered Bank speculate on the likely approval of spot ether ETF products in the U.S. by May and VSFG indicates a potential Q2 launch in Hong Kong, there are already a number of similar products out in the wild around the world. According to data compiled by crypto data aggregator platform CoinGecko, the top 10 ether funds account for $5.5 billion in value. Among them is the XBT Provider ether exchange-traded product (ETP), the world’s first Ethereum-based security made available on a regulated exchange, namely Nasdaq Stockholm in Sweden, by crypto ETP specialist CoinShares. While the race is on in Hong Kong to launch crypto ETFs, on an international basis, competition is heating up as various global fintech hubs look to kindle what is likely to make up a significant part of the ETF sector pie in the years to come.
