Ministry of Science and ICT to hold conference to explore future of Web3

The Korean Ministry of Science and ICT is set to host the Next-Generation Web Conference next Monday (local time) at the Science and Technology Convention Center in Seoul. Jointly organized by the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA), the Web 3.0 Convergence Technology Forum and the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Korean office, the event aims to explore Web3’s role in heralding a new era. Experts and attendees will gather to share insights on current Web3 technology trends and industry developments as well as future prospects.

Web3’s promising opportunities

Touted as the future of the internet, Web3 is recognized for its ability to address current issues with the internet such as platform monopolies and data concentration. As one of the most anticipated emerging industries, it is expected to lead economic and societal transformation through convergence between technologies like blockchain, artificial intelligence and big data.

“The growth of new technologies such as big data and blockchain, coupled with the integration of intelligent web technologies, is accelerating the transition to the new Web3 era,” said President Lee Won-tae of the KISA. Regarding the KISA’s role in facilitating this transition, he added, “The KISA will strive to foster a secure and convenient internet environment based on Web3 technologies, promoting the discovery of new services.”

 

Event details

The conference will feature two keynote speeches, titled “The Current State of Web3 and Our Readiness” and “Web 3.0 from W3C perspective, and the future of Web.” This will be followed by four sessions, which will delve into various topics such as blockchain business strategies, tokenized securities and Web3 service development.

Pre-registration for the conference is open until Sunday, with a chance to win various prizes available for those who register to attend in person. The event will also be livestreamed on YouTube.

The venture was conceived by Peter Knez, former Co-Chief Investment Officer of BlackRock’s fixed income division and Mustafa Kheriba, Iceberg’s Executive Chairman.In a tweet thread published back in August, the firm described the fund as “old money meets new, the perfect platform for leading the next iteration of blockchain development.” The fund outlined that its approach incorporated venture capital, the offering of a project incubator and a specialist advisory service.Knez has set out lofty ambitions for the fund, stating:“The vision is to drive billions of users into our layer one Blockchain technology by being institutional quality and regulated, and by being such we can actually partner with the government and institutions to help them develop framework for stable coins, for cross-border payment system for tokenization of real world assets and thereby help web2 businesses and citizens move to web3.”At the time of its announcement, Venom Ventures boasted a $20 million investment in Nümi Metaverse and a $5 million strategic investment in Layer 1 blockchain Everscale.Unexpected silenceFurther details on deals struck since January have been scarce, although the fund was reported back in August to have been involved in a blockchain-based carbon credits project, backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE).According to The Block, there has been an unexpected silence from the venture as its first year in business comes to a close, despite the initial buzz in the crypto community that greeted the launch of the fund.Venom Ventures positioned itself to cover the entire venture spectrum, from seed to late-stage investments, even offering grants ranging from $25,000 to $200,000. However, a closer look reveals a stark contrast between the fund’s ambitious promises and its current progress. The fund’s website lacks a portfolio section, displaying only a “coming soon” notice.Blockchain mainnet yet to launchThe venture fund has yet to launch its Venom blockchain mainnet, according to Christopher Louis Tsu, CEO of the Venom Foundation. The lack of updates and communication has raised concerns among industry observers about the fund’s overall progress and its ability to fulfill its investment commitments.The broader context of the crypto market adds to the challenges faced by Venom Ventures. Q4 2023 is expected to see a significant drop in venture funding for Web3, down to approximately $2.7 billion from the peak of $13.5 billion in Q1 2022. Market events have left VCs cautious, with notable instances of significant investments being marked down to zero.Amidst these challenges, crypto startups have turned to the Middle East for capital. However, some industry insiders caution that the perceived ease of accessing capital in the Middle East might be a mirage. With that, it remains to be seen whether the fund can revive its initial momentum and deliver on its promise to fuel the growth of Web3 startups in the ever-evolving crypto landscape.

This achievement allows the app to offer full mobile trading capabilities. Prior to this milestone, HashKey had been primarily catering to professional investors under a voluntary licensing scheme.With the new app, Hongkongers can now conveniently purchase bitcoin and ether, utilizing either Hong Kong dollars or US dollars, directly from their local bank accounts. The app launch is significant as HashKey has become one of Hong Kong’s first fully compliant retail-facing crypto trading platforms. “We’ve recorded large trading volume since we began to serve retail users,” Weng stated. The move aligns with the Hong Kong government’s efforts to bolster the virtual asset sector, which was set in motion one year ago with various policy shifts.These shifts included the introduction of a mandatory licensing scheme for cryptocurrency platforms, enabling them to offer tokens with large market capitalizations to retail traders. The new licensing regulations officially took effect in June, with a one-year grace period, though no new exchanges have been approved to date. HashKey and its rival, OSL, had their previous licenses upgraded in August.Developmental challengesHong Kong has faced several challenges on this journey. While the new regulations are largely in line with international norms, the process has been notably expensive, particularly against the backdrop of a bearish crypto market.The lingering fallout from the JPEX scandal, a cryptocurrency exchange allegedly involved in fraudulent activities, continues to impact Hong Kong’s virtual asset landscape. The SFC first raised concerns about JPEX in mid-September, and since then, it has moved to tighten regulation in response, having received thousands of complaints in relation to JPEX.Despite these challenges, HashKey Group has reported significant activity on its retail platform since its launch in August, with a total trading volume exceeding US$600 million. On October 30, the 24-hour trading volume exceeded US$100 million.Planned token launchIn a move designed to incentivize new users, HashKey Exchange has introduced its platform token, HSK, which is slated to be officially listed on the exchange next year. With a total supply of 1 billion HSK, the company has specified that these tokens will not be initially sold to retail investors, emphasizing its long-term vision for the project.Established in Hong Kong in 2018, HashKey Group operates a digital asset brokerage and a venture capital arm. HashKey Exchange earned the distinction of becoming Hong Kong’s second licensed exchange in November of the previous year, following in the footsteps of OSL. Notably, five companies have applied for the new licensing scheme, according to the SFC, while several other exchanges have expressed their intent to pursue similar approval.

Data Labs leverages blockchain technology for data-based travel itinerary appFounded in 2021, Data Labs is changing the landscape of travel by leveraging blockchain and NFT technology to offer a wallet service called “MyInfo Market,” where users can store and control their own data, according to an article published by Korean news outlet Data News.In particular, MyInfo Market can be used in tandem with the company’s travel app Yeohaengdaelo, which utilizes users’ travel-related data to recommend travel destinations and organize and share itineraries. Users can directly manage their personal preference information on MyInfo Market and selectively submit the information necessary to receive rewards. “It’s not just a travel itinerary app, it’s also a way for individuals to earn money using their own data,” said Kim Jong-hyun, CEO of Data Labs.Photo by Eva Darron on UnsplashSeamless travel experienceYeohaengdaelo integrates Naver Blog, Instagram and KakaoTalk services into one app, aimed at relieving the stress that comes with travel preparation, Kim explained. It utilizes data such as the region a user is traveling to, their travel companions and information on facilities, as well as their travel preferences and patterns. The app also provides real-life services such as discounts at designated restaurants near the travel site.Building trust and valueThe company explained that it intends to maintain a cyclical data ecosystem where users can willingly provide their data to get travel recommendations and receive suitable compensation for that information in return. Because the ecosystem is blockchain-based, it provides a safe method of personal information management.Since the launch of Yeohaengdaelo in July, Data Labs has been developing a business model that can secure a solid user base and revenue for affiliated businesses. It expects to reach 55,000 members next year and 2.14 million members by 2028. The company also expects to use the business model as a basis for generating KRW 500 million (approximately $386,000) in revenue next year by linking marketing channels, issuing discount coupons for kids’ amenities and providing data royalties.In the future, Data Labs plans to expand Yeohaengdaelo to include not only travel preparation services but also information on various discounts that users can receive based on the location they are in. Efforts like this will be necessary to provide unique user experiences, the company said.Data Labs is also currently receiving support through Y&Archer’s tourism acceleration program. Y&Archer is a Korean investment and acceleration firm known for its AC Program, which discovers, accelerates and supports startups through various projects.“In the past, companies profited from personal data, but Yeohaengdaelo allows individuals to monetize their data. Our goal is to create a world where individuals can regain the rights (to their own data) and be at the center of Web3 content,” Kim said.
