Web3 & Enterprise·July 26, 2023, 5:49 AM

LINE Xenesis, a blockchain developer of Tokyo-based messaging app giant LINE Corporation, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com to explore new global business opportunities in the blockchain industry.

With the establishment of LINE Blockchain Lab in April 2018, LINE Corporation has conducted research and development on blockchain-based decentralized applications (dApps), peer-to-peer networking systems, and cryptographic techniques. Thanks to this endeavor, LINE not only developed the Finschia blockchain and its native token FNSA, but also launched crypto exchange LINE Bitmax and non-fungible token marketplace LINE NFT.

Synergistic goals

Through this partnership, the two entities will bring together their respective expertise to advance and innovate crypto-related business solutions in Asia and beyond. They will collaborate to increase the liquidity of LINE Bitmax, strengthen crypto payment functions, and promote NFT initiatives.

Founded in 2016, Crypto.com has been expanding its services worldwide. In a recent interview, Patrick Yoon, General Manager of Crypto.com Korea, shared the company’s plan to launch its services in South Korea this year. Thus far, Crypto.com has achieved virtual asset service provider registration from the Bank of Spain and secured a major payment institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Meanwhile, despite global progress, the company ceased its institutional offering in the United States last month due to insufficient demand.

Asia and beyond

We are excited to see the synergies created by our partnership with Crypto.com, which has more than 80 million enthusiastic users worldwide, with LINE Xenesis’ blockchain business in Japan. Starting with this collaboration in the Japanese market, we hope to work towards new business opportunities globally based on the technology and knowledge of our two companies.”

Crypto.com CEO Eric Anziani echoed this sentiment, saying, “We are excited to partner with such an established and innovative brand in the APAC market and a leader in blockchain technology development in Japan. Enabling real-world utility is critical to our mission of mainstreaming crypto. Through our collaboration with LINE Xenesis, we will facilitate this utility by leveraging our respective expertise with a highly tech savvy base throughout the APAC region.”

Bybit CEO Applauds Hong Kong and UAE Regulatory Approaches

Bybit CEO Applauds Hong Kong and UAE Regulatory ApproachesBen Zhou, the CEO of Dubai-based crypto spot and derivatives trading platform Bybit, has recently lauded the regulatory approach of Asian and Middle Eastern countries. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Zhou singled out Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in particular, while also drawing attention to the contrasting approach taken to regulation of digital assets in North America, particularly Canada.Photo by Alex King on UnsplashDiffering regulatory approachesThe Bybit CEO believes that the tone set by regulators towards the crypto industry differs significantly between regions, with Asia and the Middle East displaying a more collaborative and supportive stance compared to North America. He perceives a shift in the attitude of regulators, seeing cryptocurrencies as an opportunity rather than a crisis.Praising Hong Kong and Dubai Regulators, Zhou highlights Hong Kong’s aggressive efforts to attract crypto companies by tapping into the talents within the industry. While recognizing the common goals among regulators worldwide, he notes that Dubai’s crypto regulatory framework has advanced even further than Hong Kong’s.Bybit’s strategic moves underline Zhou’s praise for these regions’ regulatory environments. On April 1, Bybit announced plans to establish its core operations in Hong Kong, positioning its research and development (R&D) and marketing teams in the Chinese autonomous territory.Subsequently, on April 17, Bybit officially unveiled its headquarters at the Dubai World Trade Center, a year after receiving in-principle approval to operate its crypto asset business in the UAE.Canadian market exitHowever, Bybit faced challenges in Canada due to its evolving regulatory landscape. While the company claimed not to operate in the United States, it had onboarded customers in Canada in the past. The situation changed in May when Bybit withdrew its services from Canada following the fallout from the FTX exchange scandal in November 2022.The regulatory environment became increasingly stringent, prompting Bybit to exit the Canadian market. Despite having ongoing conversations with Canadian regulators and receiving an invitation to apply for a crypto license, the restrictions on stablecoin usage played a significant role in the company’s decision to withdraw.Fifth most popular exchangePresently, Bybit ranks as the fifth most popular crypto exchange in the world, according to a report by CoinGecko for the second quarter of 2023.The company has been extending out its product offering, recently entering the crypto lending arena. Towards the end of May, the business received “in-principle” approval from the Astana Financial Services Authority (AFSA) to operate as a digital asset trading business and digital asset custodian in Kazakhstan. In June the crypto exchange followed the lead of other global crypto platforms such as Crypto.com and Binance by integrating artificial intelligence-driven trading tools into its platform for the benefit of its users. As the crypto sector continues to evolve, the differing regulatory approaches in different regions will play a crucial role in shaping its future. Bybit’s CEO, Ben Zhou, advocates for collaboration between regulators and crypto companies, emphasizing that viewing cryptocurrencies as an opportunity will foster innovation and growth in the industry.

Positive market sentiment ahead of Bitcoin halving

Seychelles-incorporated crypto exchange platform Bitget recently released findings from a study on Bitcoin's upcoming halving, revealing that the vast majority of surveyed investors predict bitcoin will achieve a new all-time high (ATH) in 2024. Separately, other market commentators and analysts appear to be bullish on bitcoin ahead of the scheduled cut in Bitcoin mining rewards.Photo by Kanchanara on Unsplash84% anticipate new bitcoin ATHThe study, based on anonymized data from 9,748 participants worldwide, focused on investor perceptions surrounding the halving's impact on their investment decisions. 84% of participants anticipate a new ATH for bitcoin during the next bull run, with only East Europe showing a percentage lower than 80%. Over 50% predict bitcoin's price to be between $30,000 and $60,000 by the time the halving occurs in April. Meanwhile, 30% foresee the bitcoin unit price going higher than $60,000. Off the back of the data that has arisen via the study, Bitget managing director Gracy Chen suggested that it is indicative that 2024 will be a significant year for the bitcoin market. Crypto investment plansApproximately 70% express plans to increase their crypto investments, with the highest conviction in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and East Europe regions. Western European investors are characterized as "short-term cautious" and "long-term optimistic." In addition to the Bitget study, many market commentators appear to have arrived at a similar conclusion. In July of last year, Standard Chartered Bank forecasted a 2024 unit price for bitcoin of $120,000. The bank reaffirmed that view last month, going further still in stating that by 2025, it expected bitcoin to reach a price of $200,000, largely due to capital inflows into spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which were approved in the United States in January. Broader market sentimentTaking to social media on Monday, crypto analyst Charles Edwards of Capriole Investments proposed a potential 500% price return for bitcoin if a bullish halving pattern plays out. Edwards envisions bitcoin reaching $280,000 in 2025. Like Standard Chartered, he cites the January bitcoin ETF launch as the driving force, likening it to a "second halving." He argues that major technological developments have historically seen quicker rates of adoption. Crypto trading analyst Michaël van de Poppe predicts a pre-halving surge to $48,000 and an eventual breakout toward an all-time high in Q3/Q4 of 2024. The next Bitcoin halving is expected in April 2024, historically associated with increased scarcity and subsequent price surges. Pseudonymous macroeconomist @Micro2Macr0 took to the X social media platform on Monday, stating:"Only 2.5 months till the #Bitcoin #Halving. The world is getting more unstable and you have the greatest hedge ever invented sitting in front of you. What are you waiting for?"  Meanwhile, "British HODL" warned that recent developments may result in a break from previous trading patterns. He stated:"Everyone says 12 months after the halving the shock starts for #Bitcoin price. . . . I think there is a high likelihood that the ETF’s change the cycle you’re expecting. Be aware of that.”
