Animoca Brands Remains Bullish on Blockchain Gaming

Blockchain-based games have gained significant attention within the cryptocurrency space, witnessing remarkable growth and daily activity across various protocols despite challenging market conditions. Hong Kong-based Animoca Brands, the Web3 and metaverse company, recently pronounced its bullishness where blockchain gaming is concerned.

In 2022 alone, Web3 gaming attracted approximately $4.5 billion in funding, as asset managers, investment funds, and venture capitalists sought to capitalize on the flourishing sector. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Yat Siu, Co-Founder of Animoca Brands, expressed the company’s renewed optimism in the blockchain gaming sector and provided an update on its eagerly anticipated metaverse fund, which made headlines in late 2022.

Animoca’s metaverse fund

The metaverse fund, originally planned to have a budget of up to $2 billion in November 2022, aimed to invest in mid to late-stage startups focused on developing metaverse products and experiences. However, due to recent volatility affecting the cryptocurrency space, Animoca Brands scaled back its investment target to $1 billion in January 2023. Reports in March suggested a further reduction to $800 million.

While awaiting the required license to launch the metaverse fund, Siu emphasized that Animoca Brands has been actively investing in early-stage startups through its venture arm, with additional investments directly from the company’s balance sheet. Currently, the company boasts a portfolio of over 450 companies.

 

AAA blockchain games anticipated

Despite the challenges, Siu anticipates the release of several “AAA” blockchain games, in which Animoca Brands has made investments, by the end of 2023 or early 2024. Siu believes that the quality of titles backed by Animoca Brands, built on open protocol systems such as Ethereum and Polygon, will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the sector. He underlined the importance of these games being on-chain, enabling third parties to leverage the capabilities of blockchain technology and explore exciting possibilities.

Siu also highlighted the significant role of scaling protocols like Polygon and technological advancements such as zero-knowledge proofs in boosting the development and quality of upcoming blockchain games. Immutable, a layer-2 platform, effectively reduced costs and improved transaction speeds for NFT generation in blockchain games. Choosing the right blockchain platform, especially Ethereum, is crucial for success in the industry.

While fully decentralized games present challenges, Siu acknowledged that a hybrid on-chain and off-chain approach might be more suitable as the industry progresses towards true decentralization. Certain game features, such as provenance and skins, lend themselves well to on-chain implementation, while others may require a gradual transition.

 

Integrating blockchain tech with existing gaming

Siu emphasized the potential for integrating blockchain elements into the existing gaming culture worldwide. By designing interfaces that are familiar to gamers and gradually introducing crypto and Web3 experiences, gaming companies can facilitate the adoption of blockchain technology while promoting financial literacy among players.

The Head of Animoca Ventures, an Animoca Brands sister company, recently explained that key Japanese games console makers are also showing an interest in blockchain gaming.

Looking ahead, the year 2023 and beyond are critical for the blockchain gaming sector. The release of high-quality games, coupled with significant investments, will shape the long-term success of the industry. Zetrix launches product to simplify KYC for Chinese nationals

Zetrix, a layer-1 blockchain project for real-world applications, has launched an electronic Know Your Customer (KYC) verification product for Chinese nationals. The Malaysian enterprise, which is a subsidiary of digital services company My E.G. Services Berhad (MYEG), has launched ZCert. The offering is available to Chinese nationals who opt to have their digital identities published to the Xinghuo BF network, a Chinese national blockchain infrastructure network developed under the guidance of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and managed by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.Photo by Diego Jimenez on UnsplashFirst-of-its-kind applicationZetrix acts as an international super-node relative to the Xinghuo blockchain. In a press release published by PR Newswire on Oct. 3, the company outlined that ZCert had been launched as a first-of-its-kind application, enabling Chinese nationals “to be authenticated and verified digitally overseas, paving the way for a seamless, efficient, and secure verification process for verifiers and identity holders. ” The service simplifies the issue of identity verification for verifiers located outside of China, as a consequence of Zetrix’s integration with the Xinghuo BIF network.  Connecting to ‘China Web3’Xinghuo signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Zetrix’s parent company, MYEG, to establish the international super-node back in November 2022. The tie-up was seen as an opportunity to provide access to Chinese government agencies and businesses internationally.  At the time, MYEG Managing Director and Zetrix Co-Founder Wong Thean Soon said that “with the commencement of the Xinghuo International Supernode, the rest of the world can connect and be part of the China Web 3 evolution that will promote the establishment of international communities and facilitate global trade and finance.”  On this occasion, Wong said that the new product “enables a new wave of services powered by smart contracts.” He added that KYC processes can be simplified and automated, while “user data is retained by users at all times and only critical information is shared in an encrypted manner." The company has already digitized Chinese driving licenses for the purpose of overseas verification. Furthermore, it has plans to expand its offering beyond ID verification soon. In April of this year, Zetrix and MYEG signed an MOU with MaiCapital, a Hong Kong-based virtual assets manager, with a view towards collaborating on the launch of a digital asset fund or digital asset-based exchange-traded fund (ETF). Last year Zetrix engaged in a pilot project with the Bank of China with the aim of offering supply chain financing products. On a similar theme, its parent company entered into a partnership with the Philippines Bureau of Customs (BOC) and Cargo Data Exchange Center Inc. (CDEC), also in 2023. The collaboration involved the use of Zetrix’s ZTrade product, a Web3 platform that enables digitized trade document verification. Zetrix launched its ZETRIX token in October 2023 through an initial exchange offering (IEO) facilitated by the Coinstore exchange.

Japan eyes 20% crypto tax rate by 2025 in major regulatory shift

Japan’s financial sector is poised for a significant change as the Financial Services Agency (FSA) unveils new tax reform guidelines for fiscal year 2025. This marks the first time virtual currency transactions will be addressed within Japan's tax framework, signaling a pivotal shift in the country’s stance on cryptocurrency taxation. Current taxation issuesPresently, Japan imposes a maximum tax rate of up to 55% on cryptocurrency revenues, a figure that has been criticized for deterring investment in the growing crypto market. Crypto profits are taxed as miscellaneous income, with the highest rate applying to earnings over 200,000 Japanese yen. Corporate holders of crypto assets face a flat 30% tax on their holdings, irrespective of their income or profits. These high tax rates contribute to Japan's relatively low cryptocurrency adoption rate, placing the country 18th in the 2023 Global Crypto Adoption Index by Chainalysis.Photo by Tobias Wilden on UnsplashIn response to rising demands from both investors and businesses, there is strong advocacy for a more favorable tax structure. The new proposal suggests reducing the crypto tax rate to 20%, aligning it more closely with the tax rates applied to traditional financial assets like stocks. Meanwhile, private companies like Metaplanet are also expanding their crypto investments, recently securing a loan of 1 billion Japanese yen ($6.8 million) at an annual percentage rate of 0.1%.  Impending tax changesThe FSA's decision to include crypto assets in the 2025 tax reform proposal represents a significant departure from previous reluctance to formally recognize the industry. The proposed changes would expand loss offset provisions, potentially aligning crypto assets with the tax treatment of public bonds and listed stocks. This adjustment could offer relief to investors by allowing them to offset losses against their crypto gains. Despite these promising developments, the implementation of these proposals remains uncertain. A previous proposal to reduce the crypto tax burden has failed to produce policy changes. Nevertheless, the inclusion of crypto assets in the FSA’s reform agenda is a positive step toward a more supportive regulatory environment. Japan’s current high tax rates contrast sharply with other crypto-friendly regions in Asia. For instance, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a major hub for crypto businesses by imposing no taxes on crypto profits. Similarly, countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia have attracted significant crypto activity due to their progressive regulations and lower tax rates. Conversely, India’s 30% flat tax on crypto has prompted many companies to relocate to more favorable jurisdictions such as Dubai. As Japan considers transitioning to a more crypto-friendly tax regime, there is cautious optimism about its potential impact on the industry. If successfully implemented, the proposed changes could boost adoption and growth, making Japan a more appealing location for crypto businesses and investors. The ultimate effect will depend on the government’s reception and execution of these proposals in the coming years. For now, the inclusion of crypto assets in the tax reform agenda marks a promising step toward a more balanced and supportive regulatory landscape for the cryptocurrency industry in Japan.
