NFT holder benefits

In an interview with Korean crypto news outlet Digital Asset, Yoo Hyun, the entrepreneurial business owner, explained that he was seeking a strong marketing tool to capture the attention of the NFT market. Yoo was interested in seeing if his cafe could remain profitable while also offering substantial benefits to its customers.

Since April 2022, Yoo has released a total of 50 Ethereum-based NFTs related to his cafe, Hide Me, Please (HMP), in two separate batches of 25 each. The first set of NFTs grants holders a free cup of coffee or drink daily for life, while the second set offers an extra drink or dessert with each drink purchased.

Increased revenue

This unique NFT initiative has led to increased revenue for the cafe. Kim Dae-sung, the CFO of HMP, explained that the cafe’s monthly revenue increased by 15% compared to the same period last year.

HMP is currently selling 500 NFTs as a third set and plans to release more depending on demand. Yoo highlighted the importance of an appealing interior design and tempting desserts, as NFT holders visiting for a free coffee may be enticed to purchase a dessert as well.

Regular customers

Yoo asserts that the food and beverage industry hinges on retaining regular customers and believes NFTs can help achieve that objective. HMP aspires to become a community-based platform, and according to Kim, many digital artists are interested in the space that the cafe provides because it enables them to connect with clients. Collaborations often take place, and while the cafe charges for food and drinks, it does not charge for space rental. This approach fosters a positive impression and contributes to a strong brand image.

High-quality cafe

At present, about 5% of HMP’s customers hold NFT memberships. Yoo and Kim plan to increase this number to 10% but no higher, as excessive reliance on NFT members could jeopardize the business. They underlined the significance of remaining a high-quality cafe, staying true to the core foundation of their enterprise. As they anticipate the growth of the Web 3.0 ecosystem, Yoo and Kim believe that with continued efforts, HMP will gain even greater value.

UAE Issues New Guidance on Crypto AML Measures

UAE Issues New Guidance on Crypto AML MeasuresUnder new guidance issued by the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), crypto businesses will be subject to strengthened anti-money laundering (AML) and countering the financing of terrorism (CFT) measures.Photo by Joshua Miranda on PexelsTightening AML regulationThe guidance, first compiled in February but released on Wednesday, which takes into account the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), has been introduced to enhance the supervisory and regulatory frameworks and combat financial crimes. The rules are set to come into effect within a month. The Central Bank’s guidance specifically targets Licensed Financial Institutions (LFIs) in the UAE, encompassing banks, finance companies, exchange houses, payment service providers, registered hawala providers, insurance companies, agents, and brokers. These entities will now be required to comply with the new regulations to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing activities.Firm foundationsIn a written statement, His Excellency Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the UAEs Central Bank, expressed the importance of the new guidance in strengthening efforts to combat financial crimes. He emphasized the commitment to protecting the financial and monetary system’s soundness and stability, aligning with the FATF standards. The issuance of the guidance comes as the UAE aims to attract crypto businesses to the region by offering a welcoming but effective regulatory framework. In March, Dubai unveiled a dedicated agency responsible for virtual asset regulation, signaling its commitment to fostering a favorable environment for crypto-related activities. Its Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) has also taken action against what it deems to be unregulated activity in the crypto space recently. That action together with the approaches taken by Abu Dhabi and at a national level the UAE itself with respect to digital asset licensing is indicative of a territory that is setting out the right foundation upon which to develop the innovative sector. The approach taken by regulators in the UAE has garnered praise from major crypto firms, including Coinbase, who have applauded the region’s proactive stance on regulation. The strengthened regulatory framework is expected to contribute significantly to the UAE’s ongoing efforts to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism. By implementing these measures, the UAE aims to safeguard the integrity and stability of its financial and monetary systems while fostering a secure environment for crypto businesses to thrive.Global regulatory effortsThe UAE’s AML guidance comes amid ongoing efforts globally to come to terms with virtual assets. Tomorrow Japan will implement its adherence to the FATF travel rule regulation relative to digital assets. Crypto businesses like bitFlyer are already adjusting to that eventuality, while also implementing a similar standard in international markets. As the UAE continues to position itself as a leading hub for the crypto industry, the introduction of these new AML rules demonstrates its proactive approach to regulation. The collaboration between the Central Bank and other global regulatory bodies, such as the FATF, showcases the UAE’s commitment to international cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and best practices in the ever-evolving crypto landscape.

IEEE to deploy skill certificates on blockchain for Indian members

IEEE to deploy skill certificates on blockchain for Indian membersThe Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a professional association boasting a membership of over 75,000 in India, has chosen the Avalanche blockchain as the primary settlement layer for issuing tamper-evident certificates.Photo by Vishnu Mohanan on UnsplashIntegrating Avalanche blockchainIndia holds the second-largest IEEE membership base globally outside the United States, making this move a significant development in secure credentialing.According to a report by Cointelegraph on Wednesday, Avalanche’s C-Chain will serve as the key settlement layer for IEEE’s certificate issuance due to its compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The decision aims to provide an ecosystem that meets the requirements for tamper-proof, instant and secure verification processes for all trainees and users receiving IEEE credentials.Zupple Labs collaborationThe blockchain certificates will be issued through LegitDoc, a blockchain-based credential lifecycle management system developed by Zupple Labs. Neil Martis, Co-Founder of Zupple, noted that the Indian public sector has shown increased willingness to implement full-fledged blockchain projects over the past 12 months, moving beyond pilot initiatives. This is the latest project in recent weeks that has seen Zupple Labs play a key role in enabling the real-world use of blockchain. Through a collaboration with the Indian Web3 startup in October, the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) streamlined its purchase order process, issuing tamper-proof digital purchase orders via LegitDoc.Avalanche expands into IndiaDevika Mittal, Head of Avalanche’s India arm, emphasized the significance of Avalanche’s EVM compatibility in simplifying the deployment of widely used applications, including credential registries and identity management. She pointed out that reputable institutions like SK Planet and JP Morgan Onyx prefer Avalanche as their go-to blockchain.Mittal has been a key hire for Avalanche blockchain developer Ava Labs recently as part of its efforts to target significant expansion within India. Earlier this year, the company collaborated with China’s Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing subsidiary of e-commerce behemoth Alibaba Group, assisting with the building of a launchpad that will enable the deployment of metaverses. The partnership between IEEE and Zupple Labs is poised to bring about the issuance of numerous tamper-proof engineering credentials in India. This collaboration underscores the growing acceptance of blockchain in education credentialing, setting a powerful precedent for broader participation in the Web3 landscape. In an interview, Martis expressed the flexibility of their approach, stating:“We would be experimenting with new platforms as additional parallel settlement layers as suitable new tech emerges.”This reflects an openness to exploring evolving blockchain technologies while maintaining a commitment to ensuring the immutability, longevity and security of the solutions. The IEEE-Zupple Labs collaboration aligns with the trend of blockchain integration in educational and professional spheres, offering a glimpse into the future of secure and efficient credentialing systems. As the second-largest membership base outside the United States, India plays a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of blockchain adoption within professional associations like IEEE.
