Hong Kong’s GSBN Takes Lead in Blockchain Logistics

Web3 & Enterprise·April 12, 2023, 3:38 AM

In recent years, the logistics industry has seen an increase in the use of blockchain technology to streamline supply chains and provide greater transparency to customers. While some major players, like Danish firm Maersk, have terminated their blockchain-based platforms, others are bullish on the long-term potential of the technology.

A blockchain-based shipping platform

One such player is the Hong Kong-based Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), a nonprofit consortium focused on blockchain trade applications. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, GSBN operates one of the world’s largest platforms as an alternative to Maersk’s TradeLens tool. Since launching its blockchain-based shipping platform in 2021, GSBN has partnered with major shipping companies and terminal operators such as Cosco, Orient Overseas Container Line, Hapag-Lloyd, Hutchison Ports, SPG Qingdao Port, PSA International, Shanghai International Port Group, and Cosco Shipping Ports.

The platform, based on a permissioned blockchain with strong data governance, allows only authorized parties to contribute and consume shipping-related data. The organization believes that blockchain is a crucial logistics tool in the long term, and its adoption may take another decade.

Blockchain inevitable amid continued digitization

GSBN CEO Bertrand Chen is confident in the potential of blockchain technology, saying that global trade will not continue to rely on “pen and paper” by 2032. He believes that blockchain has the potential to help the industry transform in response to supply issues triggered by events such as COVID-19.

“Because of COVID-19, because you have to change the process, I think this is one of the regular use cases of blockchain” . . . “Probably that’s better than NFTs of digital art. NFTs of documents for global trade — this will be the real killer use case.”

While Chen acknowledges that China has taken the lead in blockchain logistics due to its significant investment in the industry, he believes that GSBN has global ambitions and is working to attract more European shipping lines. The nonprofit even hopes to onboard Maersk one day, but Chen admits that such a scenario “may be slightly challenging.”

Emerging Web3 hub

Hong Kong has also emerged as a major hub for Web3 and cryptocurrency, with the local government taking action to adopt clear industry regulations. Despite a blanket ban on crypto in China, some Chinese government-related firms have reportedly been growing interested in crypto investment, with state-owned firms like insurer CPIC launching crypto-related funds in early April.

Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize global trade and supply chain management, providing greater transparency and efficiency. However, widespread adoption may still be years away, and companies will need to navigate regulatory and technical challenges to fully leverage the benefits of blockchain.

While some logistics firms may have terminated their blockchain-based projects, others like GSBN remain optimistic about the potential of blockchain technology in global trade. With major shipping partners and terminal operators already onboard, GSBN has a solid foundation to build on as it continues to attract more players to its platform. As the world becomes increasingly digitized, blockchain may be a crucial tool for the logistics industry to transform and adapt to new challenges.

Blockchain Tech Enhances Korean Meat Industry’s Trading System

Blockchain Tech Enhances Korean Meat Industry’s Trading SystemThe Korean meat industry is leveraging blockchain technology to optimize its meat trading system.©Pexels/mali maederOn Tuesday, the MOOxMOO Foundation, a Korean blockchain-driven supply chain management provider, announced its strategic partnership with meat processing company PMD, according to the Maeil Business Newspaper.Inefficient distributionThe partnership aims to enhance the transparency of the meat trading system and address issues of inefficient intermediary distribution, particularly regarding payments, settlements, and deliveries. This goal will be achieved through the foundation’s meat trading platform MOOxDEAL, which will utilize soulbound tokens (SBTs) to verify identities of supply chain participants.Rising meat demandThe OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2022–2031 stated that in 2021, world meat imports are estimated to have reached 40 million metric tons (Mt), with poultry imports leading the way. Brazil, the European Union and the United States were among the top meat exporting countries, meeting a significant portion of the increased import demand.Meat consumption is projected to grow by 15% by 2031, driven by an expected 11% increase in the global population. Global meat supply is projected to reach 377 Mt by 2031, though growth will not be as rapid as the previous decade. The amount of protein available from poultry, pork, and beef is expected to increase globally by 16%, 17%, and 8%, respectively, by 2031, with poultry being the main contributor to overall meat production growth. The majority of meat production growth is set to occur in developing regions.Costs onto consumersDespite increasing global meat production, the unsuitable distribution structure in Korea may shift costs onto consumers.Through the partnership, the MOOxMOO Foundation looks forward to addressing the inefficiencies of intermediary distribution and benefiting consumers. The foundation also envisions its platform contributing to the Korean meat industry by optimizing both business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C) trading.

Metaplanet issues more bonds to buy Bitcoin & opens U.S. subsidiary

Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has opened a U.S. subsidiary company in Florida while also issuing 3.6 billion Japanese yen ($24.7 million) in bonds for the purpose of buying more Bitcoin.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashAccelerating the Bitcoin strategyIn an announcement on May 1, the company outlined that it had established Metaplanet Treasury Corporation in Miami, Florida. The firm cited the purpose of the subsidiary as a means through which it can accelerate its overriding strategy of accumulating more Bitcoin. Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich commented on X on the rationale behind locating the U.S. subsidiary in Florida, stating:”The reason for choosing Florida is clear: the state is rapidly emerging as a global hub for Bitcoin innovation, corporate adoption and financial liberalization.” Gerovich added that the newly formed company will enhance Metaplanet’s “around-the-clock operational capabilities across time zones.” The Metaplanet CEO sees the development as part of the firm’s evolution as a global Bitcoin treasury company.  $250 million capital raiseThe company stated that it had already established a corporate entity in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), with the U.S. addition enhancing the company’s ability “to respond to market dynamics with speed and precision.”  Metaplanet intends to raise $250 million in funding through the Miami-based entity, having launched it with initial capital of $10 million. It’s envisaged that the U.S. subsidiary can act as a vehicle to attract institutional investment.  Back in March it was reported that Metaplanet was investigating the idea of listing its stock in the U.S. At the time, Gerovich stated that the firm was “considering the best way to make Metaplanet shares more accessible to investors around the world.” As part of that process, Gerovich met with officials from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq.  In further U.S.-related developments, the company appointed Eric Trump, second son of U.S. President Donald Trump, to its strategic board of advisors in March. Last week, Metaplanet appointed David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, to its strategic board of advisors. Bond issuanceIn a separate development, Metaplanet has issued 3.6 billion Japanese yen ($24.7 million) in 0% ordinary bonds to purchase additional Bitcoin. The company used its EVO FUND as the mechanism through which it issued the bonds.  It has set out a goal of accumulating 10,000 BTC by the end of the year. Currently, the company holds 5,000 BTC. One community member believes that Metaplanet could hit this target as early as July on the basis of ongoing share dilution.Appearing on The Bitcoin Treasuries Podcast earlier this year, Metaplanet’s Director of Bitcoin Strategy, Dylan LeClair, described how prior to adopting its Bitcoin treasury strategy in 2024, the firm was a “zombie” on the Tokyo stock exchange with the pandemic having had a negative impact on the company’s fortunes.  He outlined that the company consolidated and dealt with some debt issues, but at that point it lacked a clear strategy. It then set out to replicate the success of U.S. Bitcoin treasury pioneer, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). On May 1 Gerovich posted on X that the company had achieved unrealized gains on Bitcoin exceeding six billion yen ($41.68 million).
