Major Korean Crypto Exchanges Strengthen on NFT Projects Despite Crypto Winter

Web3 & Enterprise·April 10, 2023, 2:00 AM

Despite crypto winter, major Korean cryptocurrency exchanges Upbit and Bithumb strengthened on staff and included new non-fungible token (NFT) projects.

US Tightening Policy Effects on Crypto Market

According to the electronic disclosure system operated by the Financial Supervisory Service, Upbit’s operator Dunamu saw a net income of 130.8 billion won last year, down by 94% from 2.21 trillion won. Bithumb also experienced a decline of 85% from 648.4 billion won to 95.4 billion won. This downturn is reportedly attributed to the tightening monetary policy by the US and weaker market sentiment on risky assets.

Insights on Korean NFT Market

Both exchanges, Upbit and Bithumb, having seen meager profitability in crypto trading, recruited more talent to embark on NFT projects. However, the picture is not so rosy for these new endeavors, considering the tepid NFT trade volume. According to The Block, the NFT trade volume last month reached $983.4 billion, which is lower than $1.4 trillion, the previous month’s record.

The NFT trade volume on Upbit last month also experienced year-on-year and month-on-month decreases of 48.6% and 14.5%, respectively.

Last week, Dunamu CEO Sirgoo Lee said in a shareholders’ meeting that its NFT projects are underachieving and that he is reconsidering the new projects from scratch. He added that Dunamu will build a solid foundation in Korea while promoting global businesses starting from the US through Levvels, a blockchain-based platform jointly established by Dunamu and the entertainment company HYBE.

Outlook on the Korean Market

Bithumb, on the other hand, will bolster new projects through Bithumb Meta and Rotonda. Bithumb Meta recently launched the beta service of its original metaverse Naemo Market where users can use NFTs to decorate their own personal digital space. Rotonda released Burrito Wallet last February to allow waller holders to store NFTs, cryptocurrencies, and fiat currencies.

Meanwhile, there was a mixed outlook on the Korean crypto market. One person said in an interview with Hankooki that greater workforces in the country’s leading crypto exchanges could suggest the market’s growth, but also pointed out that their bigger sizes might hinder them from maneuvering when faced with other unexpected risks.

Crypto Exchange Bithumb’s Operator Closing Businesses

Crypto Exchange Bithumb’s Operator Closing BusinessesBithumb Korea, the operator of a major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, has been streamlining its businesses in response to its ongoing struggle to generate profits.Photo by Tim Mossholder on PexelsAccording to a report by local news outlet Business Watch, Bithumb Systems, a tech solution subsidiary of Bithumb Korea, has recently ceased operations. Bithumb System was launched in March of last year with the aim of advancing blockchain and exchange technology. However, due to the decline in the crypto industry and challenges in profitability, the company had to undergo liquidation. An official from Bithumb Korea explained that the decision to close its tech solution arm was made in order to prioritize improving the competence of the exchange amidst the changing landscape of domestic and foreign markets.Other affiliates of Bithumb Korea are also facing difficulties. For instance, Bithumb Live, an e-commerce platform jointly established by Bithumb Korea and content production firm Bucket Studio, has been on hiatus since October last year. The platform incurred a net loss of 10 billion KRW ($7.75 million). Bithumb Korea, holding 37.5% of Bithumb Live’s shares, invested 6 billion KRW ($4.65 million) into the platform in 2021. Bithumb Korea recognizes these investment losses using the equity method.Additionally, Bithumb META, despite raising the highest amount of funds among its sister affiliates, has encountered challenges in making much progress since its establishment last year. Its NFT marketplace, Naemo Market, is still without a mobile application, and the introduction of its metaverse platform is still pending. Although Bithumb META managed to attract 9 billion KRW in investments last March from esteemed companies such as LG CNS, CJ OliveNetworks, and SK Square, it incurred a loss of 7 billion KRW ($5.4 million) in 2022.Furthermore, earlier this month, it was reported that the exchange closed its research center due to a decline in trading volume, despite its importance in assisting investors to make better-informed decisions.A representative from Bithumb stated that the company is actively seeking new sources of revenue through its mobile Wallet platform operator, Rotonda, and Bithumb META. However, given the market slowdown, Bithumb is now compelled to prioritize enhancing the competence of the exchange.

QCP Trading takes significant step towards full licensing in Singapore

QCP Trading, the trading arm of Singaporean crypto market maker and broker dealer QCP Group, has taken a significant step towards full licensing in Singapore, having been awarded in-principle approval (IPA) for a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license by local regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Regulated spot tradingIn a press release published by PR Newswire on behalf of QCP Trading Pte. Ltd. on Nov. 11, the company outlined further details on the receipt of the preliminary license. The company confirmed that the IPA represents an “essential step towards full licensing,” enabling it to prepare to offer regulated spot trading service facilities relative to digital payment tokens. QCP Trading is geared towards facilitating a broad range of crypto spot trading, including the trading of stablecoins and major digital asset tokens. The company offers on/off ramps into and out of cryptocurrency positions via multiple fiat currencies. Photo by Guo Xin Goh on UnsplashOperational expansionDarius Sit, founder of QCP Trading, commented on the development, stating that as the firm continues its pursuit of a full trading license, the focus remains on supporting Singapore’s reputation as a leader in digital asset regulation. Sit added that the company is proud of its “ability to remain agile and responsive to both global and local market conditions,” suggesting that this approach is the key to success in the rapidly evolving crypto sector. QCP Trading intends to continue to build a local team in Singapore and with that it is hiring in order to enable operational expansion. Melvin Deng, the company’s CEO, said that the firm is aiming “to champion robust governance frameworks,” and that its “early recognition of the critical role of regulation has proven to be a strategic foresight." Global expansionThe QCP Group appears to be pursuing a global expansion strategy as back in May, group company QCP Capital received IPA for regulated digital asset trading activities from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA), the regulator within the Abu Dhabi Global Markets economic zone in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In doing so, it became the first Singapore-headquartered crypto broker and market maker to receive preliminary approval within the Middle East region. At that point, QCP had 70 employees, with plans to relocate some of them to Abu Dhabi. In the lead-up to that IPA licensing award in Abu Dhabi, QCP had partnered with Further Ventures as part of its efforts in expanding into the Middle Eastern market. On Nov. 11, QCP Capital put out a warning via its Telegram channel, informing market participants that given the rise in the unit price of Bitcoin in recent days, it is necessary to be mindful of the risk of pullbacks, which will be required in order to account for the use of leverage within the market. In recent weeks, Fly Wing Technologies, a subsidiary of cryptocurrency service provider Matrixport, and the Singaporean subsidiary of American crypto exchange Gemini have received IPA approval with respect to MPI licensing in Singapore. At the beginning of September, crypto exchange OKX received full MPI approval.
