Web3 & Enterprise·December 04, 2023, 9:25 AM

GroundX, the blockchain subsidiary of South Korean conglomerate Kakao, has teamed up with JND Studios — the only hyper-realistic figure maker in South Korea — to drop a membership non-fungible token (NFT) collection on Klip Drops, its digital art curation gallery and NFT platform, according to an official announcement on Monday (local time).

Exclusive access

JND Studios’ figures are known for being hard to acquire, as they are often made in small batches that sell out quickly. Owners of the membership NFT will get the exclusive opportunity to be the first to purchase products from the company’s K-Star Figures lineup, which features figures of popular characters from South Korean movies and dramas. This will allow the NFT owners to secure the items before their official release without the risk of them selling out prematurely.

The first character from the lineup — actor Choi Min-sik as Oh Dae-su from the critically acclaimed film “Oldboy” — will be gifted to customers who purchase the NFT. The product is valued at KRW 3 million (approximately $2,300), according to JND Studios. A figure of actress Kim Hye-soo as the iconic Madam Jung from the movie “Tazza” will also be unveiled early next year.

The sales period for the NFT drop will run until Jan. 3 with a limited quantity available for purchase. Buyers can link their Klip wallet on the JND Studios website, verify the NFTs they own, and then purchase the K-Stars membership NFT to get their hands on the upcoming K-Star Figures.

Spearheading NFT integration

GroundX is leveraging Klip Drops to promote the widespread adoption of NFTs by implementing them in diverse sectors, such as art, retail and culture, where they can be used as membership vouchers, tickets or even coupons.

Report paints bright picture of India’s Web3 development

India Blockchain Week (IBW) 2024 was held on Dec. 4-5 in Bangalore with venture capital and blockchain advisory firm Hashed Emergent presenting a report at the event, with positive findings with regard to India’s Web3 sector. Titled “India's Web3 Landscape 2024 Report,” the research was presented at IBW 2024 by Hashed Emergent Senior Associate Sharanya Sahai. Photo by Asif Methar on PexelsGlobal frontrunnerThe report claims that the Web3 ecosystem in India has risen to the point where it is a global frontrunner when its progress is measured against Web3 development internationally. A broad network of Web3 startups has emerged, comprising of over 1,000 fledgling businesses.  Those enterprises are being supported in India by global investment, with Indian Web3 businesses having secured funding in excess of $3 billion since 2020. Taking a more recent snapshot, the report outlines that from January to September 2024, Indian Web3 startups received investment funding to the tune of $462 million, an 82% growth compared with the same period last year. These startups are spread across finance, infrastructure and entertainment niches within Web3, although the study found that the bulk of investment funding was placed with Web3 infrastructure businesses.  Home to 12% of Web3 developersHashed Emergent claims that India is home to 12% of the global pool of Web3 developers, second in the rankings on this metric with the greatest number of such developers living in the United States. However, the report maintains that India is in line to surpass the U.S. relative to the Web3 developer metric by 2027. The world’s most populous country also has strength and depth in terms of Web3 founders. It ranks third globally in terms of the overall size of its Web3 founder base. The Hashed Emergent report suggests that Indian founders, accounting for 5.4% of global Web3 startups, are responsible for driving growth in India relative to AI, decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) and scaling solution projects. Stand-out examples of Indian Web3 enterprises include exchange platforms CoinSwitch, WazirX and CoinDCX, crypto developer integration toolkit provider Transak, blockchain scaling platform Polygon, blockchain-based AI startup Sentient and blockchain protocol Biconomy. Hashed Emergent singled out Sentient and Web3 infrastructure platform Avail Network as projects which have showcased “India’s growing influence in decentralized technologies” in 2024. Adoption challengesThe report points to what Hashed Emergent terms as “an undeniable picture of India’s dominance in global crypto adoption.” That finding falls in line with a report produced by Chainalysis earlier this year, establishing India as the global leader in crypto adoption according to data it compiled.  However, in an opinion piece written by Mithil Thakore recently, an Indian co-founder and CEO of Dubai-based Velar, a Bitcoin liquidity protocol, Thakore claims that there is a disconnect between such metrics and the reality of adoption on the ground in India. In the case of the Chainalysis adoption index, the Velar CEO suggests that a “mirage of adoption” is presented, with massive signup numbers not translating into tangible active participation in the market.  While adoption rates are high, he feels that a greater level of active participation is being prevented due to what he terms as an “ambiguous” stance on cryptocurrencies by the Indian government. Regulatory ambiguity puts uncertainty in the minds of investors, holding back the industry’s growth, Thakore claims.

Socket Protocol Raises $5M in Strategic Partnership

Socket Protocol Raises $5M in Strategic PartnershipSocket Protocol, an interoperability protocol founded by Indian duo Rishabh Khurana and Vaibhav Chellani, has raised $5 million with the strategic investment coming from Coinbase Ventures and Framework Ventures.Despite the ongoing bear market, cross-chain protocols like Socket have continued to attract substantial investment, underlining the growing belief in a future where different blockchains seamlessly connect.Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on UnsplashMore than just fundingSocket Protocol, designed to enhance communication between various blockchains, secured this funding to further its collaboration with Coinbase. The firm articulated the nature of the funding and that collaboration on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. The partnership aims to create bridging opportunities for developers and users of Coinbase Wallet and Base, Coinbase’s recently launched layer-2 network built on Ethereum. Socket explained that there is already evidence of that collaboration, borne out by a bridging feature that has already been built into Coinbase Wallet, and powered by Socket Protocol. In relation to the newly launched Base network, the project stated: “We are also helping developers and apps expand to Base with a seamless onboarding experience. Rainbow Wallet, Layer3, Bungee, Zapper & more apps leverage Socket to get their users onboarded to Base already!”As the cryptocurrency ecosystem witnesses the emergence of new layer-2 networks or “rollups” and the continuous expansion of layer-1 blockchains, Socket Protocol positions itself as a critical player in connecting these fragmented ecosystems.Seamless cross-network communicationThe protocol’s primary goal is to facilitate communication between different blockchains, allowing them to interact seamlessly. By offering a bridge for assets, Socket Protocol simplifies cross-network transactions, effectively making the experience akin to operating on a single unified blockchain.Socket boasts that since the launch of the project, it has facilitated over 2.5 million cross-channel transactions, accounting for $3.5 billion in value transfer, while claiming that this is just the starting point, with the project aspiring to grow past that milestone going forward. The recent fundraising highlights the increasing interest in interoperability solutions like LayerZero, as investors recognize the significance of bridging for the future of blockchain technology. Notably, inter-bank messaging system Swift revealed experiments involving the transfer of tokenized value across various private and public blockchains, with Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol playing a pivotal role in these experiments.Socket Co-Founder Chellani emphasized the importance of scalable solutions for the future. He noted that “rollup-to-rollup communication is really important” for achieving scalability, aligning the scaling future with the concept of a multi-chain or cross-chain future. “I think the scaling future, and the multi- or cross-chain future are the same thing,” he added. This investment in Socket Protocol, coming at a time of market uncertainty within the crypto space, reflects the growing confidence in the potential of blockchain interoperability to unlock new possibilities and create a more interconnected blockchain landscape.
