Metabora Singapore, a subsidiary of South Korean blockchain game developer Metabora formerly known as Kakao Friends Games, has officially launched BirdieSquad, a blockchain-based community platform for fans of professional golfers in the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA). Revolutionizing the golf fandom

BirdieSquad was developed by Kakao VX, the digital sports arm of Korean internet juggernaut Kakao, with the goal of creating an innovative and fun playground for golf fans to interact and create a fandom-based community. Users can own NFTs of their favorite golfers — which come in six tiers: Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare, Epic and Legendary — which are stored in personal wallets, and earn various rewards based on players’ actual performance results. They can also interact with other users and compete in “cheer-offs”. During off-seasons, Metabora plans to host various events such as AI-based championship tournaments.

The platform is currently working with 46 professional golfers, including Han Jin-seon, Park Hyun-kyung, Lee Ye-won and Kim Min-byul. The platform said that it would bring more athletes in the future.

“As we strive to create a new fandom culture where pro golfers and fans can interact, we will expand our ecosystem by onboarding various entertainment content revolving around gaming and sports,” said Lim Young-joon, Chief Business Officer of Metabora Singapore.

Expanding partnerships

Meanwhile, the company has been expanding its partnerships with various global blockchain networks such as Polygon, NEAR Protocol, Ethereum and BNB Chain to expand its global ecosystem.

Former Thai PM expresses positive view on crypto

Thaksin Shinawatra, who served as Thailand's 23rd prime minister from 2001 to 2006 and whose daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra currently serves as the Southeast Asian nation’s prime minister, expressed positive views on crypto while speaking at an event in Bangkok on Monday.Photo by Evan Krause on UnsplashIssuing stablecoins According to a report by Reuters, in his speech, Shinawatra called on Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to enable the trading of stablecoins and cryptocurrencies that are otherwise backed by real-world assets (RWAs). Addressing the consideration of systemic risk posed by cryptocurrencies, Shinawatra stated:"There will be no risk, it is just another currency in the world."  Shinawatra also commented on a government plan to make the Thai tourist resort city of Phuket a potential location for a pilot program which would trial crypto payments. Bullish on crypto This is not the first occasion in which the former Thai prime minister expressed a bullish view on crypto. He has been a long-standing advocate for cryptocurrencies. His comments earlier this week mirror similar views he expressed while speaking at an event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Hua Hin in December. On that occasion, he stated: “There are already many cryptocurrencies. Some people say that in the future, we will have more currencies than countries.”  In Hua Hin, he also suggested that his friends believe that Bitcoin could reach a unit price of $850,000. With that potential rise in value, Shinawatra wants Thai citizens to be well-positioned for the crypto wave. He encouraged the Thai government to engage positively with digital assets and to take the time to study the emerging asset class. Back in August, Thailand’s SEC launched the Digital Asset Regulatory Sandbox as part of an initiative to permit interested service providers to trial crypto-related services within a controlled sandbox environment.  Building on that sentiment expressed by Shinawatra in December, in his latest speech, he called on the country’s financial institutions to be more open to cryptocurrency.  Paying attention to U.S. policy on crypto In making that call, he cited developments in the United States. Particularly, he focused on the incoming U.S. administration’s positive embrace of digital assets. This includes positive commentary made by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and the appointment of Paul Atkins by Trump as the new head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the U.S. Atkins has already outlined plans to collaborate with crypto-friendly SEC Commissioners Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda, with a view towards shaping the agency’s crypto policies.  Beyond crypto, the former prime minister had a number of other suggestions that he feels would be good for Thailand. With regard to the country’s stock market, he called for tighter regulatory oversight, tax incentives for long-term investors and improved corporate governance. He encouraged the opening of a carbon credit trading venue in order to ensure better pricing. Shinawatra believes that Thailand should legalize online gambling on the basis that it is currently losing 100 billion Thai baht ($4 billion) in annual tax revenue from the activity. The Thai government has moved to approve a draft law that would legalize casinos and gambling.

Korea's Busan city utilizes blockchain to advance shipping and coffee industries

The Busan Port Authority (BPA) recently announced its plan to deploy a blockchain-based transshipment monitoring system known as Port-i at the port of Busan, located in the southern part of South Korea, according to local news outlet Financial News. The Port-i system is designed to streamline the management of transshipment cargo for shipping companies at Busan Port, which handles about 12.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually. The system is set for a pilot phase in January 2025, with plans to expand it to all shipping companies using the port by the second half of 2025.Photo by Christopher Lee on UnsplashEnhancing efficiency and profitability in shippingWith Port-i, shipping companies will be able to track ships and cargo through the Chain Portal, Busan Port’s integrated logistics platform. Port-i will provide a unified view of berth schedules across all terminals at the port, addressing the current issue where companies have to separately check ship and cargo statuses and independently identify berth schedules at different terminals. The BPA expects that the Port-i service will allow shipping companies to manage transshipment cargo more efficiently, improve ship loading rates and potentially increase profits. Blockchain for coffee quality controlIn addition to the Port-i initiative, Busan is also exploring other uses of blockchain technology for industrial development. The city recently set up the Busan Coffee R&D Lab, backed by the Ministry of Science and ICT, as reported by Metro.  This facility aims to use blockchain to create a platform that enhances the logistics of coffee sourcing and production, including a system that assigns unique identification to coffee products. It will provide reliable data required to control taste and quality. By integrating blockchain with artificial intelligence and advanced logistics techniques, Busan is positioning itself at the forefront of the coffee industry with innovative business models.
