Bitzlato temporarily suspends withdrawal amid ongoing legal battle

Policy & Regulation·January 02, 2024, 1:06 AM

In a recent announcement, Russia-linked cryptocurrency exchange Bitzlato revealed a temporary suspension of certain withdrawal requests, with the suspension taking effect as of Dec. 27.

Asset seizure

The decision comes in the wake of French authorities seizing Bitzlato's assets in January last year, a move that also involved international law enforcement, including U.S. authorities.

In a message shared on Telegram, Bitzlato explained the suspension:

"… We are faced with the need to suspend special balance withdrawals and technical support. This is a temporary measure to prepare for and go through the upcoming court hearings regarding the seizure of user assets in France."

Special balance withdrawals

The specifics of transactions categorized as "special balance withdrawals" were not disclosed by Bitzlato, and it remains unclear whether the withdrawal freeze is applicable exclusively to users in France.

Despite the asset seizure and subsequent closure of Bitzlato's website, the company asserted in its latest statement that it managed to "close 70% of the balance" held at the time of the service shutdown. However, no details were provided on how the company intends to fulfill its obligations with its assets frozen.

Bitzlato has been under scrutiny from the U.S. Treasury, which identified the exchange as a money laundering concern linked to illicit Russian financing. Transactions with Bitzlato have been prohibited by the U.S. government.

Hydra Market counterparty

The Department of Justice (DOJ) separately accused Bitzlato of facilitating money laundering and other crimes, alleging involvement in laundering $700 million connected to the now-defunct Russian darknet market, Hydra Market.

The DOJ's United States Attorney Breon Peace characterized Bitzlato as an "open turnstile by criminals," while the exchange was deemed a "crucial financial resource" for Hydra Market, enabling the laundering of funds, including those from ransomware attacks.

Registered in Hong Kong, Bitzlato served as the largest counterparty in cryptocurrency transactions for Hydra Market, a darknet marketplace for narcotics and illicit drugs. In April 2022, U.S. and German authorities jointly shut down the illicit marketplace.

The legal troubles extend to company executives, with Bitzlato founder Anatoly Legkodymov pleading guilty to charges related to the illicit transfer of funds in the U.S. on Dec. 6. Legkodymov agreed to forfeit $23 million to prosecutors and faces a potential prison sentence of up to five years. He is currently imprisoned at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. European authorities also arrested senior management linked to Bitzlato in January 2023. The exchange's precarious situation highlights the challenges faced by cryptocurrency platforms amidst regulatory scrutiny and legal actions.

The MDC facility also currently holds John Karony, the CEO of crypto company Safemoon and convicted fraudster and former FTX founder, Sam Bankman-Fried. The Department of Justice found itself the subject of major criticism on Friday, when it emerged that it had informed the court that it would not be pursuing a second trial against Bankman-Fried.

A second trial would have centered upon campaign financing offenses. It would have likely implicated Bankman-Fried’s parents. According to federal prosecutors, the disgraced FTX CEO donated customer funds to the tune of $100 million to U.S. politicians. It’s unclear which of these politicians, if any, has returned the money, with critics alleging corruption.

Its Telegram channel has just been established, it doesn’t have a website, while its Discord and Twitter channels are also recently established with modest followings. Anonymity is a feature in Web3 and perhaps that’s the approach this project is taking. Whatever the background, it has to be said that there must be some talent behind the project for it to secure the backing of an entity like AliExpress by way of this partnership. This recent announcement was initially made on AliExpress’ official Twitter account but that tweet has since been removed. The project itself tweeted out news of the partnership on Thursday. The Moment3!’s mission, as stated in its Twitter bio, revolves around utilizing NFTs to immortalize special moments on the blockchain.According to the project’s Discord channel, The Moment3! aims to connect with real-world businesses and provide NFT owners with benefits and exclusive rights beyond the collectible value.NFT debutThis marks AliExpress’ initial venture into the NFT market, although its parent company, Alibaba, has previously explored the Web3 space. In September 2022, Alibaba’s luxury shopping platform, Tmall Luxury Pavilion, introduced an immersive shopping metaverse experience and introduced the Meta Pass, granting users free access to virtual experiences.Alibaba-Centric Web3 projectsThere have been several other Web3-related investments and developments related to Alibaba Group companies in recent months.Last month, Alibaba Cloud, one of the world’s largest cloud computing companies, joined forces with the Avalanche layer one blockchain project to introduce “Cloudverse,” a launchpad facilitating the creation of personalized spaces within the metaverse for businesses. In April Alibaba Cloud was the co-organizer of the Web3 Festival, an event held in Hong Kong to showcase the autonomous Chinese territory for the development of the Web3 sector. The investment firm is the personal investment vehicle of Alibaba founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai.NFT warningAliExpress, owned by Alibaba Group, is a global e-commerce platform that does not cater to customers in mainland China, despite being headquartered in China. The Chinese government prohibited all cryptocurrency transactions in September 2021. NFTs remained legal although authorities recently issued a warning on their use, together with some guidelines. With its new collaboration, AliExpress is expanding its reach into the Web3 space and exploring the potential of NFTs. As the release date approaches, anticipation grows to witness the specific features and benefits offered by the 5,555 NFTs that will soon be available to the public.

Taiwan Crypto Trader Strikes it Lucky in Tax Receipt Lottery

Taiwan Crypto Trader Strikes it Lucky in Tax Receipt LotteryA trader on Taiwan’s MaiCoin Max crypto exchange has struck it rich in an unexpected way, winning a grand prize of 10 million NTD (approximately $310,000) in the country’s monthly national tax receipt lottery.Photo by Nick Fewings on UnsplashFrom 6 cents to $300KWhat makes this story, which was reported by CoinDesk on Friday, even more surprising is that the trader had paid a mere 2 NTD (equivalent to $0.06) in fees on the exchange as they engaged in relatively small trades. The lucky individual, who chose to remain anonymous, didn’t earn this windfall through traditional trading profits or by accumulating tokens. Instead, their fortune came from Taiwan’s unique approach to tax compliance. For crypto exchanges like MaiCoin, every trade conducted on their platform technically counts as a taxable event. This means that active traders can amass numerous virtual “lottery tickets” each month through their trading activities and transaction fees.Uniform invoice lotteryTaiwan introduced its tax receipt lottery system, known as the uniform invoice lottery, back in the 1950s as an innovative method to encourage tax compliance among consumers. While tax authorities worldwide struggle to capture revenue from cryptocurrency holders, Taiwan’s approach allows them to indirectly benefit from the earnings generated on crypto exchanges. For every transaction made by an individual, whether that should occur on a crypto exchange or elsewhere, the individual is issued with a tax receipt. An electronic copy is also registered with Taiwan’s tax authority. Essentially, every receipt then becomes a lottery ticket as the tax authority then runs a draw on an ongoing basis where taxpayers can earn cash prizes. This particular win involving a Taiwanese crypto trader has drawn attention from the broader public. Paul Huang, a Research Fellow at the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation, took to X (formerly Twitter) on the subject, stating:”Who says retail users can’t profit from trading cryptos? Taiwan’s largest crypto exchange @MAX_exch announced some user made a tiny trade that paid $2 NTD ($0.06 USD) in fee on platform, the tax receipt ended up winning 10mil ($310k USD) in Taiwan govt’s invoice lottery!”The recent $310,000 jackpot represents the largest prize ever won by a crypto trader through this lottery. Nevertheless, Taiwan’s tax receipt lottery typically produces smaller windfalls, with the country collecting over $7 billion in sales tax revenue in 2021, and a significant proportion paid out in lottery winnings.Critics argue that this system may not be the most efficient way to boost tax compliance, but Taiwan maintains one of the world’s most effective tax regimes, consistently generating impressive revenue relative to its GDP. Additionally, stories of remarkable lottery jackpots serve as excellent public relations for the scheme. There’s little doubt that cryptocurrencies have brought about significant challenges for tax authorities worldwide. In this particular instance, Taiwan’s tax receipt lottery stands as a unique and intriguing approach to fostering compliance while occasionally making crypto traders unexpectedly wealthy.
