Etherscan expands through Solscan acquisition

Expanding beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) domain, Malaysia-headquartered Etherscan has officially acquired Solscan, a prominent block explorer within the Solana ecosystem.

Enhancing cross-chain analysis

The acquisition, announced earlier this week, signifies a noteworthy development within the blockchain industry and is poised to bring about a new interface aimed at enhancing cross-chain analysis.

 

Solscan, based in Singapore with its primary team in Vietnam, was previously majority-owned by TomoChain Lab, a Singaporean blockchain software developer. The deal’s terms were not disclosed and the acquisition places Solscan in the same league as Polygonscan within the family of Etherscan block explorers.

 

Diversifying product offering

Etherscan, established in 2015, stands as one of the earliest crypto projects, initially focusing on the EVM space. The platform offers an explorer-as-a-service product for blockchain explorers, with the acquisition of Solscan marking a significant step in diversifying its offerings.

 

Since its inception in 2021, Solscan has risen as a leading explorer in the Solana ecosystem, catering to over three million monthly users. Providing services such as detailed address, token, transaction information, APIs, dashboards and NFT metadata, Solscan mirrors Etherscan’s services but is tailored for the Solana network.

 

The merger between Etherscan and Solscan is anticipated to bring forth a series of enhancements and innovations, with both platforms benefiting from the integration of additional features. The roadmap for this collaboration outlines improvements in user interfaces, navigation and overall accessibility, promising an enriched user experience.

 

Solscan, in its announcement, assured its commitment to the Solana community, vowing to maintain unparalleled blockchain exploration services. The shared vision of Etherscan and Solscan revolves around providing what Etherscan termed “credibly neutral and equitable access to blockchain data,” underlining their commitment to transparency and fairness in the blockchain space.

 

Matthew Tan, CEO and founder of Etherscan, expressed excitement about the acquisition and highlighted the alignment of Solscan’s expertise in making blockchain data accessible and user-friendly with Etherscan’s mission. The acquisition is expected to contribute significantly to the broader blockchain ecosystem.

 

Solscan serves as a crucial player in the Solana ecosystem, an Ethereum alternative. The platform assists users in viewing information within the Solana blockchain, managing accounts, tracking transactions and exploring investment opportunities across various crypto platforms.

 

Solana resurgence

This deal comes at a time when Solana’s momentum is evident, ending 2023 on a strong note. In December 2023, NFT sales on the Solana network surpassed those on Ethereum for the first time. Solana has experienced substantial growth in comparison to Ethereum, both in terms of its token’s value and against the U.S. Dollar.

 

The fall of crypto exchange FTX had a large impact on Solana and its ecosystem as FTX had been heavily involved within that community and associated projects. The exchange still holds a sizable amount of locked SOL tokens. Following its collapse, the SOL unit price fell below $10. At the time of writing, it stands at $100.

 

The acquisition of Solscan by Etherscan underscores the resurgence of the Solana ecosystem, with major players in the Web3 space recognizing the value of Solana-based technology. As both platforms collaborate, users can anticipate a more robust and interconnected blockchain exploration experience.

Binance.th, which is currently in its beta testing phase, is expected to open to the public in early 2024. A filing on Wednesday by Gulf to the Thai stock exchange demonstrates that the platform has received approval from the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission to offer exchange and brokerage services for cryptocurrencies and digital tokens. The filing states:“Gulf Binance’s digital asset platform will provide digital asset exchange and digital asset broker services for both cryptocurrencies and digital tokens, prioritizing security and compliance with SEC regulations.”The platform is initially available by invitation only, and the plan is to eventually open the exchange to the general public. It’s understood that the platform will strive to provide a “globally standardized” service that will enhance the level of service in Thailand and promote the development of the country’s blockchain ecosystem.Market opportunityBinance.th enters the Thai crypto market at a time when the local leader, Bitkub, holds a dominant share of 75.4%. Bitkub benefited from the global crypto market downturn in 2022, which affected its competitors such as FTX and Zipmex.Although it has extended market share during the downturn and as a consequence of the demise of other platforms, Bitkub has also struggled with market conditions. In July its parent company Bitkub Capital Group, reduced headcount by six percent. Bitkub recorded $28.6 billion in trading volume last year, out of the total $37.94 billion generated by the top four Thai exchanges.Binance.th hopes to challenge Bitkub’s position by leveraging Binance’s global reputation and expertise in the crypto industry.Legal woesThe launch of Binance.th comes amid Binance’s legal and regulatory troubles in the U.S. and Europe. In September, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Binance, its U.S. subsidiary, and its founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) for allegedly listing unregistered securities in the form of cryptocurrencies.In June, the SEC also accused CZ and Binance of illegally marketing its international platform to U.S. customers.Binance has been trying to improve its compliance and governance standards in response to regulatory scrutiny. The company has hired former regulators and executives from the traditional finance sector to lead its operations in various regions. Binance has also applied for licenses and registrations in several jurisdictions, such as the U.K., Singapore and Japan.The origins of this deal stem from a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Binance and Gulf Energy in January 2022. The joint venture business which emerged acquired a digital operator license in Thailand in May of this year.By expanding its presence in Southeast Asia, Binance hopes to tap into the potential of the emerging crypto markets and diversify its revenue streams. Binance.th also marks the first bank-backed crypto exchange in Thailand, as Gulf Energy Development is partly owned by the state-owned Krung Thai Bank.

Nissan delves into metaverse on a heritage and safety theme

Users can explore this historic car from the 1980s while learning about the influence of pedestrian clothing colors on driver visibility. In another exhibit, users engage in a mini-game designed to educate on driver field-of-view and the impact of multitasking on safety. Alongside, the Skyline 2000GTX-E, famous for its presence in popular media like the Gran Turismo video game series and Fast and Furious movies, adds a touch of nostalgia and excitement, transporting users to the 1970s era. In a 1950s and 60s American diner and drive-in theater setting, the final exhibit offers a hands-on steering wheel spin exercise. It’s not the carmaker's first rodeo where the metaverse is concerned. It introduced its first virtual test drive and a virtual unveiling of its Sakura model in 2022. That same year, the company suggested it was interested in providing more in the way of virtual events, even going as far as to suggest the development of virtual customer support offices for clients. It followed that up in December 2023 with a revamp of four existing metaverse worlds, a project that also formed part of its 90th-anniversary celebrations. Nissan's latest foray into the metaverse coincides with advancements in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) hardware. The recent launch of Apple's inaugural mixed-reality headset in February 2024 signals intensified competition among tech giants like Meta and Microsoft, who have been gradually expanding into consumer and enterprise AR/VR markets over the past decade. Broader auto industry interestNissan isn’t alone in the auto industry in taking initial steps into the metaverse. Rival Toyota has taken a different approach, pursuing an interest in creating remote workspaces for staff so that meetings can be held in the metaverse. Hyundai experimented with entering the metaverse as early as 2021. Through a partnership with Naver Z, the company offered virtual test drives of its Sonata model. Meanwhile Renault Korea has tipped its toes in the metaverse by offering consumers the ability to custom-build virtual cars on a metaverse platform. Through these metaverse updates, Nissan aims to stay at the forefront of automotive innovation, utilizing immersive experiences to engage customers and promote safety awareness in an increasingly digital world.
