Acquisition synergy

Treehouse announced the acquisition on Thursday, via a press release published by PR Newswire. Origins Analytics has distinguished itself as a leader in NFT data analysis. The enterprise had raised $4 million in funding in 2022, going on to grow a community of over 10,000 users. The enterprise-grade platform offers valuable insights and services to NFT enthusiasts and investors.

Origins Analytics proficiency in both on-chain and off-chain data analysis had made it a highly sought-after name in the NFT space. With this acquisition, Treehouse is doubling down on its intention to deliver comprehensive NFT analytics services to its clientele.

In reorganizing the businesses following acquisition, the founding team of Origins Analytics will be joining forces with Treehouse. Treehouse’s management believes that this synergy of expertise from both companies will ensure a seamless transition and integration of Origins’ capabilities into Treehouse’s existing suite of offerings.

Broadening service offering

The integration of Origins Analytics opens up new avenues for Treehouse’s service portfolio. As a consequence, Treehouse will now be able to offer an algorithmically tagged NFT wallet notification system. This will allow its clients to anticipate and better leverage algorithms to deliver real-time updates on NFT transactions and wallet activity.

Treehouse is set to introduce NFT analytics bots designed to provide comprehensive data insights and market trends, empowering users to make informed decisions in the dynamic NFT sector. Additionally, the company will go forward to offer an NFT wallet profiling API, granting users deeper insights into NFT wallet activity and aiding in trend identification and opportunity spotting.

CEO of Treehouse, Brandon Goh, conveyed his enthusiasm for the acquisition and the broader NFT analytics market, stating:

“Treehouse is excited to make this move into NFT analytics. This strategic acquisition underscores our commitment to our clients, many of whom have NFT exposures. Our team is gearing up to integrate Origins’ system into our flagship product, Hyperion, confident that its technology aligns with our users’ needs and paves the way for us to serve the wider NFT community. Despite the bear market, Treehouse is expanding and is actively looking to acquire synergetic businesses.’’

Expansion ambitions

Treehouse’s decision to acquire Origins Analytics comes hot on the heels of its successful seed round in 2021, which saw it raise $18 million from prominent investors, including Lightspeed, MassMutual, Binance, Mirana, LeadBlock, Jump, GSR and Wintermute. This recent acquisition stands as a testament to Treehouse’s ambition to broaden its Web3 portfolio and provide cutting-edge services to its valued clients.

While the exact financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Treehouse clearly views this move as a strategic investment in the rapidly expanding NFT market. The company demonstrates confidence in its ability to harness the potential of the NFT sector, even in the face of challenging market conditions.

Hong Kong and Israel Collaborate to Expand CBDC Access Beyond Banks

Hong Kong and Israel Collaborate to Expand CBDC Access Beyond BanksIn a collaborative effort, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), the Bank of Israel (BoI), and the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) Innovation Hub have jointly released a comprehensive report on Project Sela, a central bank digital currency (CBDC) initiative.Photo by POURIA 🦋 on UnsplashBroadening the role of intermediariesThe report was published to the BIS website on Tuesday. In keeping with the trend of many CBDC projects, Project Sela is characterized by a robust public-private partnership. However, its particular focus lies in broadening the spectrum of intermediaries, aiming to offer retail CBDC services through a more diverse array of service providers, thereby reducing dependency on traditional banks and major payment providers.Andrew Abir, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Israel, emphasized the importance of fostering a dynamic and open ecosystem with a wide variety of service providers. He stated:“Competition and innovation require a flourishing and open ecosystem with many different types of service providers. This was our initial goal in Project Sela as a proof-of-concept, and the project proved the feasibility of the model we had in mind.”Involving retail banksIn a previous model explored through Hong Kong’s Project Aurum, retail banks were entrusted with customer-facing tasks while maintaining the central bank’s operation of the wholesale ledger for the eHKD. In contrast, Project Sela introduces a novel approach where the central bank operates the retail ledger — a model akin to Israel’s digital shekel. The primary actors in Project Sela, known as Access Enablers (AEs), notably do not have control over CBDC balances, distinguishing them from conventional payment providers. Moreover, AEs are not required to maintain liquidity to support CBDC services. Their role encompasses facilitating user onboarding and CBDC access, fulfilling know-your-customer (KYC) and compliance obligations, and routing payments. The role of banks and other “funding institutions” primarily revolves around enabling the conversion of cash and deposits into CBDC.The rationale behind this approach is rooted in the emergence of technological advancements in open banking and DeFi, which have demonstrated the potential to disentangle financial services by granting users greater access to their financial data and control over their own funds.Enabling participation among the unbankedProject Sela envisions the unbanked population utilizing ATMs to convert cash into CBDC. A similar approach has recently been taken by the Chinese authorities. In the resort city of Sanya, authorities have introduced e-CNY ATMs in order to enable e-CNY access for foreign tourists. However, it is noteworthy that in many countries, the primary function of ATMs is to dispense cash rather than accept it. Consequently, the inclusion of AEs could pose challenges to traditional banking institutions, as CBDC adoption could potentially impact bank deposits.Privacy and cybersecurity considerations are implicated within Project Sela. As the central bank operates the retail ledger, ensuring the confidentiality of personal information becomes imperative. To safeguard privacy, AEs employ a hashing mechanism to obfuscate personal identifiers, although the report does not delve into the subject in detail. While Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron admitted that a CBDC can never be anonymous, he claimed that “if we choose to issue a digital cash shekel, it will provide at least as much privacy as other digital means of payment.”

Ant Group preparing to apply for stablecoin licenses in Hong Kong & Singapore

Ant Group, a Chinese financial services conglomerate and affiliate of the Alibaba Group, has plans to acquire stablecoin licenses across Asian markets and further afield. Its Singapore-headquartered global digital payments and financial technology subsidiary, Ant International, plans to file an application for a stablecoin license in Singapore and in Hong Kong once the Chinese autonomous territory implements its stablecoin regulation later this summer.  That’s according to a report published by Bloomberg on June 12, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. Beyond the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, Ant International also plans to seek a stablecoin license in Luxembourg.Photo by Ban Daisy on Unsplash2 Hong Kong stablecoin license applicationsIn a statement, Ant International stated: “We plan to apply for the fiat-referenced stablecoins (FRS) issuer's license once the process is open after the [Hong Kong] Stablecoins Ordinance takes effect on August 1.”Additionally, Bian Zhuoqun, president of Ant Digital Technologies, another Ant Group subsidiary focused on applying digital technologies, confirmed that it too will be applying for stablecoin licensing in Hong Kong.  Zhuoqun told reporters that the company has already opened dialogue with the regulator in Hong Kong, while also participating in a regulatory sandbox. While the company wasn’t a named participant within Hong Kong’s stablecoin sandbox, it had previously participated in Project Ensemble, an initiative run by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) aimed at establishing a tokenization ecosystem in the city. Exploring stablecoin applicationsOn June 10, Ant International and German multinational investment bank Deutsche Bank announced a strategic partnership geared towards establishing integrated cross-border payment solutions to global merchants.  The two firms stated that they would explore tokenized bank deposits while also looking into stablecoin applications for global payments. It highlighted the potential use of stablecoins within Ant companies, facilitating real-time cross-border treasury management, reserve management and on-ramp and off-ramp services. Back in November, Singapore-headquartered StraitsX, a stablecoin-based payments startup, launched a cross-border payments product in association with AliPay+, Ali International’s offshore digital payments platform. A key component of the product offering is the use of the XSGD stablecoin. Hong Kong passed its stablecoin bill last month. Last week, the city’s government outlined that the effective date for the resultant Stablecoin Ordinance has been set for Aug. 1. Under the Ordinance, only licensed institutions are authorized to offer fiat-referenced stablecoins in Hong Kong, while the issuer of such a stablecoin must be licensed in order for it to be offered to a retail investor. Last month, multinational banking and financial services group HSBC launched Hong Kong’s first blockchain-based settlement service, utilizing tokenized deposits for swift transactions. The company collaborated with Ant International, which became the first client of the service. Entering the financial mainstreamA Financial Times report published on June 12 asserted that stablecoins are entering the financial mainstream, a development that “could have profound implications for the global financial system.” Earlier this week, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Hong Kong’s stablecoin law could lead to a boom in digital assets.Daniel Tse, managing director of Hong Kong brokerage firm Futu Securities, told the SCMP: “We’re seeing a significant trend in investments related to stablecoins on our platform, which highlights the growing importance of this sector.”
