Web3 & Enterprise·October 27, 2023, 2:12 AM

Hong Kong-based crypto trade execution specialist Anboto Labs has successfully secured $3 million in funding and unveiled an institutional-grade non-custodial trading platform.

Investors who participated in the funding round included Kronos Ventures, Cherry Crypto, Mechanism Capital, XBTO, and Singaporean digital assets financial services platform Matrixport, contributing to this funding round during the third quarter of this year. Anboto Labs, known for its crypto trading execution tools, has been on a steady growth trajectory, having raised $1.9 million last year, elevating its valuation to $35 million, according to Guillaume Forcade, the company’s co-founder.

Crypto trade execution

From its inception, Anboto Labs has consistently generated revenue, and now it’s ready to introduce its execution platform to a broader audience of experienced traders. The public launch of the platform will enable Anboto to scale up to support thousands of traders simultaneously.

The newly released platform underwent an extensive 18-month closed beta phase, during which it processed $4 billion in trading volume across 20 exchanges and blockchain networks. Anboto Labs is attempting to distinguish itself in the market with its execution algorithms, including TWAP, VWAP, and iceberg, which are designed to optimize pricing and execution quality.

TWAP, or time-weighted average price, can be incorporated into a trading algorithm with a view towards optimizing a trade’s average price while executing the trade over a predefined time period. In recent days, the project’s Head of Quantitative Research, Suren Markosov, took to blogging site Medium to outline how Anboto’s TWAP algorithm is geared up to save on trading costs. According to Markosov, the firm’s approach could lead to traders saving between two and eight basis points in costs.

VWAP, or volume-weighted average price, can be used to filter out the “noise” in the market to determine the real buy/sell price that exists within the market within a given period. Meanwhile, an iceberg order is executed such that it is sliced up into smaller orders. In this way, the impact cost of overall trade execution is minimized.

Focus on security

Anboto Labs also places a strong emphasis on security. It allows users to sign up without the need for a time-consuming Know Your Customer (KYC) process, offering a streamlined experience. Additionally, the platform provides multi-factor authentication and the option to whitelist IP addresses, further enhancing security measures.

Brett Sun, an investor with Cherry Crypto, took to X (formerly Twitter) to recognize Anboto’s platform launch. Sun stated:

“Big strides from @guiviaje and the team at @anboto_labs. They’ve come out of beta to democratize access to professional-grade trading tools for all traders.”

WOO Network integration

Earlier this week, Anboto announced the integration of Taipei-based liquidity provider WOO Network into its platform. Forcade said that the integration will enable the firm to offer even more efficient trading tools to its users.

In the coming months, Anboto Labs plans to expand its trading features with the aim of democratizing access to institutional-grade execution tools for all crypto traders. With a track record and fresh funding behind it, Anboto Labs is setting itself up to potentially make a significant impact in the cryptocurrency trading space, offering traders the tools they need for success in the crypto market.

Singapore proposes additional rules to safeguard retail crypto investors

Singapore proposes additional rules to safeguard retail crypto investorsSingapore announced on Thursday its intention to implement new regulations aimed at protecting individuals by limiting their ability to trade cryptocurrencies.Photo by Daniel Welsh on UnsplashRules follow public consultation processIn a press release published to its website on Thursday, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the city-state’s central bank and financial regulator, finalized these measures following a yearlong public consultation and review of cryptocurrency platforms, also known as digital payment token (DPT) service providers.Effective in phases from mid-2024, one key measure will prevent operators from accepting purchases through locally issued credit cards. Along the same lines, the regulator wants operators to discourage the use of margin and leverage transactions, or borrowing to facilitate trading activity. Market commentators, such as Custodia Bank Founder and CEO Caitlin Long, have long warned of the havoc that leverage has played in the crypto sector. Last year Long commented:”SO MUCH of the garbage in #crypto during this cycle was just leverage dressed up as tech innovation.”Additionally, incentives that encourage individuals to trade digital tokens will be banned. Such incentives could include providing free trading credits or digital assets as rewards during sign-ups or referrals.Curbing speculationWhile the MAS acknowledges the speculative and highly risky nature of cryptocurrency trading, it asserts that these regulations aim to help cryptocurrency operators protect customer interests. However, the MAS emphasizes that the regulations “cannot insulate customers from losses associated with the inherently speculative and highly risky nature of cryptocurrency trading.”Ho Hern Shin, the Deputy Managing Director for Financial Supervision at the MAS, urged consumers to exercise caution, stating:“We urge consumers to remain vigilant and exercise utmost caution when dealing in DPT services and to not deal with unregulated entities, including those based overseas.”The MAS expanded the scope of these measures to include all retail customers, regardless of their residency, following public feedback. This includes individuals who are not accredited investors or institutional investors. Accredited investors are those with over $1 million in net financial assets, among other criteria.Responding to crypto platform failuresThese regulatory steps come in response to the increasing access of individuals to the risky asset class, driven in part by the collapse of several unlicensed cryptocurrency companies in Singapore such as Hodlnaut and Vauld last year. The resulting calls for greater oversight prompted the MAS to initiate a feedback-gathering exercise in October, seeking input from industry players on proposed measures and other framework-establishing proposals. The bankruptcy filing of cryptocurrency group FTX the following month further accelerated the need for regulatory action globally, including in Singapore. In July, the MAS published the initial set of measures based on the consultation, requiring operators to keep customer assets in a trust and limiting their lending and “staking” of digital payment tokens.Staking, a process enabling investors to earn yields by depositing crypto assets for use in blockchain transactions, is among the activities facing restrictions. MAS Managing Director Ravi Menon criticized cryptocurrencies recently, stating that they have “failed the test of digital money,” citing poor performance as a medium of exchange or store of value and susceptibility to sharp speculative swings, leading to significant losses for many investors.

DDC Enterprise signs MOU with Animoca Brands in $100M deal

Animoca Brands, a Hong Kong-based Web3 company focused on blockchain gaming and NFTs, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with DayDayCook (DDC) Enterprise Limited in a deal that will see Animoca allocate up to $100 million in Bitcoin with that capital to be exposed to yield enhancement strategies operated by DDC.Photo by Erika Fletcher on UnsplashBitcoin treasury strategyIn a press release published to its website, Animoca Brands claimed that the deal accelerates the Bitcoin accumulation strategy pursued by DDC. Back in May, DDC Enterprise, a Chinese company listed on the Nasdaq in the U.S. while headquartered in Hong Kong, became one of many Nasdaq-listed companies recently to add Bitcoin to its balance sheet.  At that time, it made a symbolic initial 21 BTC purchase, bearing in mind the leading digital asset has a supply cap of 21 million BTC. The company has set out an ambitious plan to build up a Bitcoin treasury of 5,000 BTC over the course of three years. DDC Founder Norma Chu described the development as a “pivotal moment.” ‘Pristine monetary asset’On this occasion, Chu described the partnership with Animoca as a “transformative step,” reflecting the companies’ “shared vision to accelerate Bitcoin’s role as a pristine monetary asset.” As part of the partnership, Animoca Brands Co-Founder and Executive Chairman, Yat Siu, will join DDC’s Bitcoin Visionary Council (BVC). The company established the BVC recently in order to put strategic leadership and guidance in place so that DDC’s Bitcoin-related treasury operations are conducted in accordance with industry standards so as to maximize value creation in the long term. Siu said that the arrangement enables Animoca Brands “to enhance the value of [its] blockchain technologies and maximize the value of [its] Bitcoin holdings.” Commenting further on the partnership, he added: “We will focus on developing strategies to enhance Bitcoin’s value proposition, leveraging DDC’s commitment to advancing corporate Bitcoin treasury solutions." Siu told Cointelegraph that Animoca Brands' belief in the abilities of the DDC founder played a large part in the company establishing the partnership. He said that her background and experience enable her to “bridge the East and West to successfully navigate markets on both sides of the planet,” adding that “she has good appeal and connections to the Chinese market, one of the largest for crypto adoption, while also running a NASDAQ-listed company.” On BitcoinTreasuries.net, a Bitcoin treasury data hub, DDC is listed as 47th in terms of corporations globally that have adopted a Bitcoin treasury strategy, ranked by the amount of Bitcoin that they have accumulated. The website suggests that DDC currently holds 368 BTC, valued at approximately $43.2 million. Following its initial purchase of 21 BTC in May, the company followed up with the acquisition of 38 BTC in June. On July 1, it announced that it had raised $528 million to expand its Bitcoin holdings, with confirmation of a further purchase of 230 BTC by July 7.

HashKey Capital and FTSE Russell introduce crypto index suite

HashKey Capital, a Singapore-based crypto fund manager, and FTSE Russell, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), have collaboratively launched a series of indices designed to track cryptocurrencies. Three indicesRevealed on the FTSE Russell website on Wednesday, these three indices provide traders with the ability to monitor diversified baskets of digital assets aligned with various investment strategies. They cater to nuanced preferences across different crypto segments and market capitalizations. The flagship index in this suite is the FTSE Custom Digital Asset Top 20 Index, tracking the top 20 crypto assets based on market capitalization. This index is positioned to accurately reflect more than 90% of the overall performance of the digital asset market, offering investors insights into the dynamics of the most significant players in the crypto space.Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashFocus on infrastructure and application layerBeyond tracking market capitalization leaders, the suite includes indices with a specific focus on the crypto ecosystem's infrastructure layer (FTSE Custom Digital Asset Infrastructure Index) and application functionalities (FTSE Custom Digital Asset Application Index). One of them, the infrastructure index, zeroes in on digital assets forming the infrastructure layer, including smart contract platforms, protocol interoperability and distributed computation and storage. Meanwhile, the FTSE Custom Digital Asset Application Index concentrates on digital assets associated with application functionalities, such as those linked to staking instruments and decentralized finance. From Wednesday, these indices have been made accessible on the FTSE Russell website, with plans for future availability through major data providers like Bloomberg, Factset, LSEG Data & Analytics, Morningstar and S&P Capital IQ. U.S. ETF approvalThe introduction of these indices follows the recent milestone approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of spot bitcoin ETFs in the United States. It’s likely that the milestone ETF approval in the largest capital market is having a knock-on effect, proving to be a catalyst for other such offerings implicating the intertwining of crypto and traditional finance on an international basis. These products offer investors a more accessible entry point into the crypto market's largest asset, currently boasting a market capitalization of approximately $780 billion. Industry watchers anticipate the potential approval of a U.S. spot ether ETF later in 2024, with the SEC expected to make rulings on proposed funds by May. Deng Chao, managing director of HashKey Capital, noted a significant surge in demand from investors seeking to diversify their portfolios beyond established cryptocurrencies. This move aligns with broader market trends, as investors increasingly explore opportunities in diverse crypto assets. Notably, these index launches follow FTSE Russell's partnership with Grayscale Investments in October, aimed at enhancing crypto diversification. The earlier collaboration focused on various crypto sectors, including currencies, smart contract platforms, financials, consumer and culture and utilities and services. This development comes on the heels of HashKey Group, the Hong Kong-headquartered parent company of HashKey Capital, securing $100 million in a Series A funding round at a $1.2 billion valuation. OKX Ventures participated in the funding round, signaling strong support for HashKey Group's plans to accelerate product diversification in its Hong Kong business and drive compliant and innovative development globally.
