SBI Remit and Shonan Shinkin Bank Join Forces on International Remittances

Web3 & Enterprise·October 03, 2023, 12:42 AM

SBI Remit, a long-time partner of Ripple, has expanded its collaboration in Japan, partnering with Shonan Shinkin Bank to offer international remittance services.

The partnership, operating under the guidance of SBI Group and announced by SBI Remit last week, claims to provide a more efficient and cost-effective solution for international employees living in Japan who need to transfer money abroad.

Efficient overseas transfers

Both Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, the area of operation of Shonan Shinkin Bank alongside the city of Yokosuka where it is headquartered, have witnessed a surge in the number of migrant employees working there. That makes these metropolitan areas ideal locations for this particular collaboration.

According to the press release, the partnership “was formed as mutual use of both parties’ network and strengths would allow Shonan Shinkin Bank to offer highly convenient international money transfer services that deliver convenience for foreign nationals working at local companies while enabling SBI Remit to develop new markets.”

The collaboration, named SBI Ripple Asia, aims to leverage Ripple’s distributed ledger technology to streamline international payments. The technology has the potential to disrupt the remittance sector by offering real-time processing of cross-border payments. This approach significantly reduces transfer times and costs. One of the key elements of the partnership involves the use of XRP, Ripple’s native digital asset, for on-demand liquidity (ODL) between Japan and the Philippines. ODL allows for near-instantaneous transfers.

Broader sector trend

This partnership is part of a broader trend in the financial industry, where blockchain technology is being harnessed to enhance services. Ripple, in particular, has been targeting remittances through an offering that enables a competitive edge through both speed and cost-effectiveness relative to transfers. Foreign workers in Japan, particularly the 280,000 Filipinos working in the country, stand to benefit from this new offering. That’s due to the ongoing need for foreign overseas workers to send money back home.

The SBI Remit and Shonan Shinkin Bank collaboration highlights the immense potential of blockchain technology in reshaping financial services, especially in regions with a high concentration of foreign workers.

This development represents yet another significant achievement in the longstanding partnership between SBI and Ripple. The two companies first began to cooperate by way of a mutually beneficial partnership in 2016 with the establishment of SBI Ripple Asia. The recent demonstration of using XRP for ODL remittances in Japan and the Philippines showcases the tangible benefits of this collaboration, with the potential to reduce international transfer times from days to mere minutes.

With the demand for seamless international money transfers on the rise, the partnership between SBI Remit, Shonan Shinkin Bank, and Ripple is poised to make a significant impact on the remittance landscape in Japan and beyond.

Foreign overseas workers and the families they support in their home countries have long since been at the edge when it comes to financial inclusion. In the press release, Shonan Shinkin Bank was stated to be committed to achieving financial inclusion by partnering with various stakeholders to provide solutions to the various issues facing small- and medium-sized enterprises, as well as providing international remittances and other solutions to the diverse local community.

As the financial industry continues to embrace blockchain solutions, collaborations like this one serve as a testament to the ongoing evolution of global payments systems.

China and Singapore collaborate on cross-border digital yuan transactions

China and Singapore collaborate on cross-border digital yuan transactionsTaking yet another stride toward globalizing the e-CNY currency, China’s central bank has unveiled a pilot program in collaboration with its Singaporean counterpart, enabling tourists from both countries to use the digital yuan for transactions when traveling.Photo by Eric Prouzet on UnsplashSeries of initiativesThis move is part of a series of initiatives unveiled by the two governments during a Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation event which was held in Tianjin, China, last week. Among the announced measures is a mutual 30-day visa-free travel arrangement, one of 24 deals signed to strengthen bilateral ties between China and Singapore. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) disclosed in a statement that it had collaborated with the Digital Currency Institute of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) for this initiative. The program aims to facilitate the use of the digital version of the Chinese currency for tourist spending, enhancing convenience for travelers during their overseas trips. While specific details about the scheme were not disclosed, it represents a collaborative effort to promote cross-border transactions using the digital yuan.Internationalizing the digital yuanIn its reporting on the announcement, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) pointed to the views of Richard Turrin, an independent financial technology consultant and author of “Cashless: China’s Digital Currency Revolution.” Turrin sees the digital yuan collaboration as a promising opportunity for cross-border retail use. He suggests that starting with small transactions, such as those by tourists, could pave the way for broader applications in trade and other high-value scenarios. In an editorial back in November, the SCMP referred to the birth of the Petro-Yuan, speculating that the era of the Petro-Dollar is coming to an end. “In a global political economy long dominated by the petrodollar, this could be the beginning of a seismic shift,” the editorial stated. The internationalization of the e-CNY will likely be a key aspect of that overall monetary sea change.Over 5 years in developmentChina initiated digital yuan testing in 2019, and although an official launch timetable has not been confirmed, adoption has accelerated recently. Former PBOC governor Yi Gang reported that total e-CNY transactions reached 950 million yuan ($133 million) in June, with a cumulative value of 1.8 trillion yuan compared to 100 billion yuan in August 2022. This indicates a substantial increase in digital yuan transactions. The momentum extends beyond mainland China, with Beijing exploring CBDC usage internationally. The mBridge trial, completed last year, involved multiple countries using central bank digital currencies to settle trades, including Hong Kong, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. In June, authorities in China’s resort city of Sanya introduced e-CNY ATMs so that foreign visitors could buy the digital yuan and use it during their time in China. Another initiative aims to encourage further use of the digital currency within the Chinese autonomous territory of Hong Kong. In July, the Hong Kong arm of the Bank of China rolled out a digital yuan shopping festival in Hong Kong, allowing visitors to Hong Kong from mainland China to make purchases using the digital yuan.

Aave v3 Launches on Metis Scaling Network

Aave v3 Launches on Metis Scaling NetworkMetisDAO confirmed on Tuesday that leading decentralized liquidity protocol Aave has been deployed on the layer 2 Ethereum-centric scaling platform.Photo by Joshua Sortino on UnsplashGiven the distributed nature of the teams behind decentralized networks and projects, it can be difficult at times to determine where project teams are based, albeit in the case of MetisDAO, according to LinkedIn, its primary location is Singapore despite having a Canadian Co-Founder and CEO.Aave’s move to ZK networksThe move comes following a vote taken by Aave’s user community, who voted in favor last month of a proposal to deploy the liquidity protocol on zero knowledge-based networks. In a social media post, the Metis team referred to the decentralized lending market going live on the network as “a new era of Decentralized Finance.”The development is significant for Metis, given that Aave is the third largest project in crypto based on the total value locked (TVL) metric. Within DeFi lending, it’s the biggest project in the sector, holding a TVL of $5.4 billion. One of the keys of Aave’s dominance is its multi-chain strategy. Metis marks the eighth network upon which it has been deployed. The others include Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Fantom, Harmony and Avalanche.Metis technical roadmapWhile there’s a lot of uncertainty as to how various crypto projects will pan out over the longer run, most agree that Ethereum is here to stay. Metis stands a good chance of contributing to that ecosystem over the long term as layer two scaling networks are likely to be part and parcel of the Ethereum environment for some time to come.Last month, the project set out a technical roadmap, detailing what the project has in store, while claiming that in general, 2023 would be a great year for Ethereum. Metis is a layer two network based on Optimistic Rollup architecture. It has grown into the third largest scaling network relative to Ethereum. The project plans to roll out Bedrock, a technical upgrade that will enable improved network security. Furthermore, it plans on bringing about consensus and execution separation. Also in its sights are faster deposit times, which the project claims, will enable better UX.Many DeFi networks are under scrutiny in terms of the centralized elements that they incorporate. Metis plans to make improvements in this regard, with the intention of decentralizing the sequencer pool. The project claims that “Metis Andromeda will be decentralized to the core.”Hybrid rollupsDemonstrating further ambition, Metis is aspiring to bring about hybrid rollups, combining the features of optimistic rollup architecture with zero-knowledge proofs. In a tweet, Head of Marketing and MetisDAO Co-Founder Kevin Li said that “by combining the best traits from both schemes, hybrid rollups will offer the unmatched scalability and EVM-equivalence of optimistic rollups, together with the censorship resistance and fast finality enabled by zero-knowledge proofs. The best of both worlds.”MetisDAO believes it adds value for users of its network through Aave’s offering, enabling them to borrow assets with less collateral via Aave’s High-Efficiency mode. Furthermore, the deployment makes for improved risk management through supply and borrow caps, and siloed borrowing, reducing the risk in the event of market contagion.

Pakistan appoints crypto advisor to PM & allocates 2K MW to Bitcoin mining

Recent weeks have seen a positive policy shift in Pakistan with regard to digital assets and blockchain and that initiative has gathered further momentum with the appointment of a special assistant on blockchain and crypto to the Pakistani prime minister and the allocation of 2,000 MW of surplus electricity to Bitcoin mining and AI data centers.Photo by Abuzar Xheikh on UnsplashOn May 26, the Pakistan Observer, an English language daily newspaper, reported that Bilal bin Saqib has been appointed to serve as a special assistant on blockchain and crypto matters to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Forbes ‘30 under 30’ social entrepreneurIn this role, Saqib assumes the status of a minister of state under Rule 4(6) of the Rules of Business, 1973, with the appointment effective immediately. Saqib had been featured by Forbes through its “30 under 30” list of social entrepreneurs in Asia in 2020. He is the founder of Tayaba.org, a non-governmental organization (NGO) focused on the provision of clean drinking water to vulnerable communities in Pakistan. Saqib came to prominence in the crypto sector earlier this year when he was appointed CEO of the newly formed Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC), an agency established to promote blockchain technology and digital assets within the South Asian country. In April he was added by World Liberty Financial, a crypto project connected with the family of U.S. President Donald Trump, as an advisor. Earlier this month, Pakistan’s Ministry of Finance gave the go-ahead for the establishment of the Pakistan Digital Assets Authority (PDAA), a body that will be responsible for the implementation of regulations governing the crypto and blockchain sector.  Utilizing surplus energyAt the time, one area of focus that had been highlighted in the announcement of the establishment of the PDAA was a desire to make better use of Pakistan’s surplus energy. The country runs an annual average surplus of 4,000 megawatts. A report by 24 Digital on May 25 indicated that action has already been taken in this regard. It outlined that Pakistan has allocated 2,000 megawatts of surplus electricity for the exclusive use of operators of AI data centers and Bitcoin mining facilities.  This plan is being rolled out in phases. The first phase makes surplus energy available to these operators. Phase 2 will focus on enabling crypto mining operators to avail of renewable energy to power their facilities, in an effort to develop the sector in Pakistan in an environmentally responsible manner. According to the Ministry of Finance, interest has already been expressed by international operators in the crypto mining and AI data center sectors. A number of international firms are understood to have visited the country in an effort to explore potential collaboration opportunities.  Earlier this month, Saqib claimed on social media that Pakistan “is moving at crypto speed.” He made the case that the country is a breeding ground for crypto innovation, citing the opportunity to exploit surplus electricity via crypto mining and the potential for crypto adoption given a $36 billion remittance market, millions of unbanked citizens and 64% of the population under 30.
