Matrixport Bullish Despite Bitcoin’s Price Standoff

Markets·September 21, 2023, 2:14 AM

The crypto market, with a total capitalization of around $1.08 trillion, finds itself in a tense state of anticipation towards October, which has been historically the most robust month for Bitcoin with average returns of over 20%, according to Singapore-based digital assets ecosystem firm Matrixport.

Technical struggles

Meanwhile, Bitcoin (BTC) has been unable to breach the $27,400 mark, facing formidable resistance and failing to surpass its 50-day moving average. From a purely technical standpoint, the situation for Bitcoin appears bearish. The corrective rebound in BTC has concluded, with prices falling below key moving averages and short-term oversold conditions correcting themselves.

This technical analysis reflects the cautious stance adopted by financial markets globally ahead of pivotal monetary policy decisions in countries like the US, Switzerland, the UK, and Japan.

Mining difficulty increase

Another notable development in the world of Bitcoin is the recent 5.48% increase in mining difficulty, bringing it to 57.12 T. This surge in mining difficulty is indicative of the ongoing robustness of the Bitcoin network, with the 7-day moving average reaching a substantial 423.4 EH/s, as reported by Glassnode.

The leading cryptocurrency has a number of challenges and regulatory uncertainties that it must wrestle with currently.

The regulatory issues at leading global crypto exchange Binance represent one of those challenges. Trading volumes on the Binance exchange have plummeted by 57% over the past week, driven by users seeking refuge on platforms yet to be subjected to regulatory crackdowns. Meanwhile, a court decision opted against ordering Binance’s US unit to provide the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States with further customer fund information, encouraging collaboration between the parties.

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are another area where the market anticipates a resurgence in the cryptocurrency space, driven by a wave of applications to launch spot Bitcoin ETFs. This development, according to Matrixport, has the potential to be a catalyst for Bitcoin’s growth should a spot BTC ETF be approved. The leading digital currency’s market dominance is currently approaching 50%.

Meanwhile, the announcement of a new Bitcoin fund by Laser Digital Asset Management, a subsidiary of Japan’s largest investment bank and brokerage group, Nomura, has been interpreted as bullish news. Laser Digital has introduced a Bitcoin fund targeting long-term institutional investments, further demonstrating the growing institutional interest in cryptocurrencies.

Further good news has emerged via Citigroup in the United States, which has launched Citi Token. The offering leverages blockchain technology and smart contracts for business-to-business payments and trade finance, reinforcing the adoption of blockchain within the financial industry.

Divergent Predictions

Although Matrixport’s outlook is bullish, it comes amidst a backdrop of regulatory developments and technical challenges, with analysts offering contrasting outlooks for Bitcoin’s future. Matrixport projects a bullish fourth quarter for Bitcoin, citing historical trends of strong performance during this period. It anticipates potential gains of up to $37,000 by year-end.

Mike Novogratz, the Founder of crypto-focused financial services firm Galaxy Digital, envisions Bitcoin reaching $500,000 by 2024, fueled by increased adoption and maturation of the crypto market.

SK C&C to Spearhead Establishment of Korea’s First Alternative Trading System

SK C&C to Spearhead Establishment of Korea’s First Alternative Trading SystemSK C&C, the information communications technology arm of South Korean conglomerate SK Group, is set to launch the country’s first Alternative Trading System (ATS) — a securities trading venue that is more loosely regulated than an exchange — in the second half of next year. The firm announced on Wednesday that it will commence the multilateral trading system construction project for Nextrade, a corporation dedicated to preparing the ATS.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashCollaborative effort of securities institutionsNextrade was initiated by seven securities firms, including the Korea Financial Investment Association, and was jointly established by 34 participating institutions, including 19 securities companies, three securities-related institutions, and four tech companies in November of last year.SK C&C in particular has been working with Nextrade since 2019. When the corporation was still a consultative body of securities firms, the SK subsidiary was in charge of consulting on various matters regarding the establishment of the ATS and functional system requirements.Establishing a solid foundationThe aforementioned construction project aims to establish a multilateral trading system and an operation and management system to support the trading, brokerage, and agency functions of listed securities and depositary receipts on the ATS, which Nextrade will proceed with upon its official approval in the second half of next year. SK C&C will take on a major role in leading this task.“Based on our digital IT service capabilities that we have accumulated within the financial sphere, we will establish an efficient and reliable multilateral trading system that is on par with regular exchanges,” said Kim Nam-sik, head of the SK C&C Financial Digital2 Group.Besides facilitating multilateral trading, SK C&C will develop an information distribution system that processes investment information in connection with the Korea Exchange and the Korea Securities Depository, as well as a trading support system responsible for product information management, trading statistics, and administration.Trading after hoursThe ATS will allow trading past normal trading hours, which are usually from 9 AM to 3:30 PM — an especially attractive selling point for buyers and sellers. This will be made possible by compiling product information based on closing prices after the market closes, which will create an environment that allows for trading after hours. This service will not only be convenient for office workers but also help them refer to official announcements and the status of overseas markets to make more informed decisions, SK C&C said.Securities that can be traded after hours will be limited to listed stocks and depository receipts on the Korea Exchange for the time being, but SK C&C is reportedly looking into allowing trading of security tokens, non-security virtual assets, and NFTs.Ensuring uninterrupted operationsNotably, there will also be a Disaster Recovery Center, which will serve to protect the ATS’ major systems and data assets and ensure business continuity. A data backup system will be set up to reduce backup time and swiftly recover from any failures in case of potential security threats.Furthermore, the ATS plans to introduce new types of orders to enhance investor benefits in the domestic capital market, setting it apart from the Korea Exchange.

Dubai regulator takes action against unlicensed crypto firms

The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), the regulatory body which oversees the digital assets market within the emirate of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has taken corrective action against seven unlicensed crypto entities. Fines issuedAccording to an enforcement notice, published to the VARA website on October 8, the agency issued fines relative to a number of firms that it found were engaging in unlicensed virtual asset-related trading activity. The fines ranged from between 50,000 to 100,000 UAE dirhams (AED), equivalent to between $13,600 and $27,200 in U.S. dollars. The agency outlined that it was taking this corrective action in order to continue its enforcement efforts so as to safeguard Dubai’s virtual asset ecosystem. In its enforcement notice, the regulator did not disclose the names of the entities that have been sanctioned. The agency said that its investigations are ongoing, in partnership with local law enforcement.  A statement from the Regulatory Affairs and Enforcement division within VARA was provided, stating: “VARA will not tolerate any attempts to operate without appropriate licenses, nor will we allow unauthorized marketing of virtual asset activities. Our marketing regulations further emphasize Dubai’s commitment to ensuring transparency and always protecting stakeholder interests.”Photo by Alex Block on UnsplashCease and desist ordersIn addition to fines, VARA also issued the seven firms with cease and desist orders for breaching marketing regulations. Marketing by crypto firms is an area the regulator has been focusing on recently. Last month, VARA published a press release, outlining that it had updated its crypto regulations to specifically deal with marketing-related matters. Alongside that update, it issued a guidance document, clarifying the responsibilities of virtual asset service providers (VASPs) relative to marketing practices. A schedule of fines was provided in the case of a breach of the regulations, while the update set out a need for a mandatory disclaimer on marketing material to indicate that virtual assets are volatile and may lose their value, fully or partially. The Dubai regulator is not the first to home in on the marketing activities of crypto businesses. In the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) enforced additional rules related to crypto marketing in late 2023. Some crypto businesses found the requirements too arduous and left the UK market as a direct consequence. Public warningIn its enforcement notice, the Dubai regulator also had a message for the trading and investing public, stating: “This public warning is VARA’s market notice to all to avoid engaging with any unlicensed firms.” The regulator added that interacting with unlicensed entities exposes both individual investors and institutions to both financial and reputational risk.  Furthermore, it warned of “potential legal consequences” for regulatory violations. “Only firms licensed by VARA are authorised to provide virtual asset services in/from Dubai, and the Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to protect consumers and investors, and to preserve market integrity,” the regulator further asserted.
