Matrixport Bullish Despite Bitcoin’s Price Standoff

Markets·September 21, 2023, 2:14 AM

The crypto market, with a total capitalization of around $1.08 trillion, finds itself in a tense state of anticipation towards October, which has been historically the most robust month for Bitcoin with average returns of over 20%, according to Singapore-based digital assets ecosystem firm Matrixport.

Technical struggles

Meanwhile, Bitcoin (BTC) has been unable to breach the $27,400 mark, facing formidable resistance and failing to surpass its 50-day moving average. From a purely technical standpoint, the situation for Bitcoin appears bearish. The corrective rebound in BTC has concluded, with prices falling below key moving averages and short-term oversold conditions correcting themselves.

This technical analysis reflects the cautious stance adopted by financial markets globally ahead of pivotal monetary policy decisions in countries like the US, Switzerland, the UK, and Japan.

Mining difficulty increase

Another notable development in the world of Bitcoin is the recent 5.48% increase in mining difficulty, bringing it to 57.12 T. This surge in mining difficulty is indicative of the ongoing robustness of the Bitcoin network, with the 7-day moving average reaching a substantial 423.4 EH/s, as reported by Glassnode.

The leading cryptocurrency has a number of challenges and regulatory uncertainties that it must wrestle with currently.

The regulatory issues at leading global crypto exchange Binance represent one of those challenges. Trading volumes on the Binance exchange have plummeted by 57% over the past week, driven by users seeking refuge on platforms yet to be subjected to regulatory crackdowns. Meanwhile, a court decision opted against ordering Binance’s US unit to provide the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States with further customer fund information, encouraging collaboration between the parties.

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are another area where the market anticipates a resurgence in the cryptocurrency space, driven by a wave of applications to launch spot Bitcoin ETFs. This development, according to Matrixport, has the potential to be a catalyst for Bitcoin’s growth should a spot BTC ETF be approved. The leading digital currency’s market dominance is currently approaching 50%.

Meanwhile, the announcement of a new Bitcoin fund by Laser Digital Asset Management, a subsidiary of Japan’s largest investment bank and brokerage group, Nomura, has been interpreted as bullish news. Laser Digital has introduced a Bitcoin fund targeting long-term institutional investments, further demonstrating the growing institutional interest in cryptocurrencies.

Further good news has emerged via Citigroup in the United States, which has launched Citi Token. The offering leverages blockchain technology and smart contracts for business-to-business payments and trade finance, reinforcing the adoption of blockchain within the financial industry.

Divergent Predictions

Although Matrixport’s outlook is bullish, it comes amidst a backdrop of regulatory developments and technical challenges, with analysts offering contrasting outlooks for Bitcoin’s future. Matrixport projects a bullish fourth quarter for Bitcoin, citing historical trends of strong performance during this period. It anticipates potential gains of up to $37,000 by year-end.

Mike Novogratz, the Founder of crypto-focused financial services firm Galaxy Digital, envisions Bitcoin reaching $500,000 by 2024, fueled by increased adoption and maturation of the crypto market.

Blockstream partnership & new office announced in Japanese expansion

Blockstream, a blockchain technology firm headquartered in British Columbia, Canada, has moved to expand its activities in Japan with the opening of a new office and the announcement of a partnership with local companies. The infrastructure development company has partnered with Diamond Hands and Fulgar Ventures, CoinDesk Japan reported. Diamond Hands is a Japan-based company involved in providing Bitcoin-related products. It helps companies to integrate Bitcoin and lightning payments into their services. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, Fulgur Ventures invests in early-stage startups. It is particularly focused on Bitcoin and Lightning Network-related projects.Photo by David Edelstein on UnsplashBootstrapping brand awareness Fulgur Ventures is Blockstream’s largest shareholder. The objective is to bootstrap brand awareness within Japan using these partnerships with local companies. To that end, Diamond Hands CEO Koji Higashi will become Blockstream’s brand ambassador. It’s thought that efforts will be made going forward to further expand partnerships with local Japanese companies. Blockstream announced in a press release that it aims to drive adoption of self-custody technologies and Bitcoin layer-2 innovations within the East Asian country. Furthermore, it plans to drive adoption of real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. Commenting on the development, Blockstream Founder and CEO Adam Back stated:"With increased regulatory clarity and rising institutional interest in Bitcoin now is the moment for Blockstream to establish a direct presence in Japan, one of our most important markets." Back added that the company is looking forward to “empowering Japanese enterprises and individuals to fully harness Bitcoin as the foundation for a financial future that's secure, scalable and decentralized.” Tokyo office Another aspect to the expansion involves the opening of an office in Tokyo by Blockstream.  Adam Back is a Bitcoin OG who has often been the subject of speculation in attempts to identify pseudonymous Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto. Back proposed Hashcash, a proof-of-work-based system and forerunner to Bitcoin, in 1997. The Japanese corporate world has demonstrated its interest in Bitcoin in recent months, with local company Metaplanet launching an ambitious plan to acquire 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026, having adopted the Bitcoin playbook pioneered by American business intelligence and Bitcoin development company MicroStrategy. Blockstream’s investment arm, Blockstream Capital, has also been active in the market. Last month, the company invested $75 million into crypto custodian Komainu. Komainu is a joint venture between CoinShares, Ledger and Japanese global financial services company Nomura.  The same month, the company launched two institutional-grade Bitcoin investment funds. The funds, Blockstream Income Fund and Blockstream Alpha Fund, have been devised to cater to a growing demand from institutions for transparent, regulated and secure financial products. A third fund, Blockstream Yield Fund, is due to launch later this year. It will offer Bitcoin holders consistent, low-risk returns on their holdings. Blockstream was founded in 2014. In its earlier years, the company has served as a technology provider relative to the Liquid Network. In Core Lightning, it has developed a well-recognized implementation of the Lightning Network protocol.  To facilitate Bitcoin holders in terms of self-custody of the leading crypto asset, Blockstream developed Blockstream Jade, a hardware wallet built on open-source software. The device offers air-gapped functionality, meaning that users can perform transactions without connecting the device itself directly to the internet.

SafePal invests in & partners with Switzerland’s Fiat24

Singaporean crypto wallet provider SafePal has announced a strategic investment in Swiss bank Fiat24, together with the launch of a number of financial services. The partnership is a significant milestone in bridging the gap between the crypto world and real-world financial utilities.Photo by Henrique Ferreira on UnsplashVisa card and in-app bankingThe company outlined in a blog post on March 7 that the centerpiece of this collaboration is the introduction of a crypto-focused Visa card and in-app banking services, both designed to streamline the integration of digital assets into everyday transactions. The default deposit currency for these services is the dollar-pegged stablecoin USD Coin (USDC), providing users with a stable foundation for their financial activities. Through the SafePal mobile wallet app, users can convert their cryptocurrency holdings into USDC via Ethereum layer two scaling network Arbitrum, making for an efficient and reliable process. Once converted, the USDC can be stored in multiple fiat currencies, including USD, EUR and CHF, enabling seamless utilization in various transactions and expenses. Enabling Swiss bank account accessOne of the standout aspects of this initiative is the opportunity for users to establish individually owned, fully compliant bank accounts directly within the SafePal mobile wallet app. By completing the necessary know-your-customer (KYC) and onboarding procedures through Fiat24. Opening such bank accounts will be free, with no account creation or annual management fees being applied. However, transfer and deposit fees will be applied starting from a base rate of 0.6%. The project believes that the integration of NFT technology on Arbitrum will ensure the security and transparency of all related transactions. Veronica Wong, CEO and co-founder of SafePal, emphasized the importance of addressing the accessibility challenges faced by crypto users in a communication with CoinDesk. She highlighted the significance of providing a crypto-friendly banking experience that eliminates the hurdles imposed by traditional financial institutions. Additional payment platform partnershipsIn addition to the crypto Visa cards, SafePal has forged partnerships with leading payment platforms such as Paypal, Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, expanding the usability and convenience of its services. While the Visa card will initially be available in select European regions, plans are underway for its gradual expansion across the continent. Similarly, the in-app banking gateway will cater to users outside the United States and in non-U.S. sanctioned countries, fostering greater accessibility on a global scale. Working towards market growth through a partnership strategy is a route that SafePal has taken in the past. In May 2023 the company attempted to make further inroads into the Korean market by partnering with South Korean enterprise blockchain project Klaytn. In that instance, the wallet provider added support for digital assets that run on the Klaytn network via its mobile app, hardware wallet and browser extension-based wallet. In light of these developments, SafePal's SFP tokens have experienced a modest increase in value. At the time of writing, the token unit price stood at $0.8026, representing a 4.62% increase over the course of the past 24 hours.
