Three key initiatives

To achieve this goal, NEOPIN has devised three key initiatives. Firstly, it will make investments in Japanese partners and provide support for their entry into other markets such as Korea, the Middle East, and Africa. Secondly, NEOPIN aims to facilitate the entry of its existing partners into Japan. Lastly, the Korean platform plans to collaborate closely with the Finschia Foundation and its members to effectively drive its expansion efforts in Japan.

Web3 landscape in Japan

Since the Mt. Gox incident in 2014, wherein the major Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange went bankrupt due to hacking attacks, Japan has responded by implementing stricter regulations. However, in recent times, the Japanese government has displayed a more positive stance towards Web3 technology, aiming to attain dominance in this sector. Illustrating this commitment, the Web3 project team, operating under the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) Working Group for Digital Society Promotion, released the Web3 White Paper in April. The document underscores Japan’s determination to lead the global market by fostering a business-friendly environment for Web3 innovation.

Moreover, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently delivered a keynote speech at Japan’s annual Web3 conference, WebX, reaffirming the government’s dedication to establishing a Web3-friendly ecosystem. These initiatives signal Japan’s potential to contribute to the growth of the cryptocurrency and decentralized finance (DeFi) industry.

Adaptation to regulations

NEOPIN’s operator Neowiz Partners, formerly known as NEOPLY, became part of the Innovation Programme of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with an aim to become the world’s first regulated DeFi platform. It is also working with the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) to develop a DeFi regulatory framework for the Gulf nation. In a similar vein, NEOPIN strives to respond quickly to the changing regulatory landscape in Japan to ensure the Korean CeDeFi protocol firmly establishes its presence in the Japanese market.

In addition to providing direct and indirect service offerings in Japan, NEOPIN will also invest in and partner with local Web3 projects. One significant step taken by NEOPIN was its participation in IVS Crypto 2023, a high-profile Web3 startup event held in Kyoto in June. At this event, NEOPIN engaged with various Japanese businesses, initiating important connections. Since then, the Korean platform has been making progress in advancing communication and collaborations with Japanese enterprises.

NEOPIN as blockchain validator

Collaboration with the Finschia Foundation will also be strengthened to achieve success in the Japanese market. In July, the blockchain mainnet Finschia launched its governance consortium and revealed its members. Within just four hours of the consortium’s launch, NEOPIN, as a governance member, received more than 1 million delegated votes, maintaining its position at the top spot in terms of voting power ever since. The Finschia mainnet was established by Line Tech Plus, a blockchain subsidiary of Tokyo-based messaging app giant Line Corporation.

Serving as validators on various blockchains, including Ethereum, Tron, Cardano, and Cosmos, since 2017, NEOPIN has acquired blockchain and technical expertise. Last month, NEOPIN launched liquid staking products for ETH and KLAY, making it Korea’s first blockchain project to introduce an ETH liquid staking product. Liquid staking is a mechanism that allows users to deposit their cryptocurrencies into a staking pool, where they receive liquidity provider tokens in exchange. By holding these tokens, users can further redeposit them to earn additional yield.

In light of this development, NEOPIN CEO Kim Yong-ki emphasized the CeDeFi protocol’s global expansion strategy, establishing its bases in the UAE, Japan, and Indonesia. These locations will serve as hubs for NEOPIN’s expansion efforts in the Middle East and Africa, Northeast Asia, and Southeast Asia. Kim added that NEOPIN will leverage its physical and human resources to achieve notable outcomes in the Japanese market.

North Korean Hackers Take Off With $100M Atomic Wallet Honeypot

North Korean Hackers Take Off With $100M Atomic Wallet HoneypotHaving reported last week on a $35 million hack of Atomic Wallet users’ funds, an update on the matter reveals that the situation is much worse than originally thought, with losses now exceeding $100 million.Photo by Kenny Eliason on Unsplash5,500 wallets compromisedThe attack has sent shockwaves throughout the crypto community, raising concerns about the security of decentralized wallets. Atomic Wallet, an Estonia-based project known for its non-custodial approach where users take full responsibility for storing their assets securely, has been hit hard by this unforeseen breach.Elliptic, a crypto compliance analysis company, published an update on the situation on Tuesday. According to that blog article, it estimates that approximately 5,500 crypto wallets have been compromised, meaning that losses have risen to more than $100 million, highlighting the severity of the attack.Despite the significant impact on users, Atomic Wallet has yet to provide an explanation regarding the root cause of these substantial losses. Users have taken to social media in frustration, demanding clarification from the company. Surprisingly, the company’s last direct update on Twitter dates back to June 7, leaving users feeling even more anxious.User frustrationOne user, Ezra Carlson, expressed frustration, questioning why Atomic Wallet didn’t warn users when they were aware of the ongoing hack. Carlson tweeted: “@AtomicWallet why won’t AM give me a straight answer about why they didn’t warn me, knowing full well that they were being hacked, that it was not safe to use AM last week before I made a transfer to my wallet that was then hacked.”Another user, “Real Deal Crypto,” criticized Atomic Wallet’s lack of updates, stating: “Your last update was five days ago — SERIOUSLY?!?!”Although Atomic Wallet acknowledged reports of compromised wallets on June 3, downplaying the impact by claiming that less than 1% of users were affected, the staggering sum of losses indicates a significant breach. Its last communication on the matter came on June 11 when, in responding to a user, the firm said that it continued to investigate and to await Twitter updates on the matter.Hack tied to North Korea’s Lazarus GroupElliptic has connected this heist to the notorious Lazarus Group, a cyber-criminal organization with ties to the North Korean regime, responsible for stealing over $2 billion in crypto assets through various thefts. This attribution marks the first time a significant crypto heist has been openly linked to the Lazarus Group since their $100 million exploit of Horizon Bridge in June 2022.In response to the heist, Elliptic has been collaborating with international investigators and exchanges, mobilizing resources to recover the stolen assets. Their efforts have reportedly led to the freezing of over $1 million worth of funds. However, the thief has adapted its behavior in response to the freezing of assets, turning to the Russia-based Garantex exchange to launder the stolen assets, as noted by Elliptic. This recent attack adds to a series of notable breaches in the crypto industry. Jimbos Protocol experienced an exploit resulting in a loss of $7.5 million, and Tornado Cash faced a malicious proposal that seized control of its governance in May. According to a report by Chainalysis, crypto hackers made off with an estimated $3.8 billion in 2022, with North Korea being responsible for a significant portion of the attacks.

Hong Kong’s HashKey Adds AVAX Trading

Hong Kong’s HashKey Adds AVAX TradingHashKey Hong Kong, the Chinese autonomous territory’s first licensed retail crypto exchange, has unveiled an addition to its platform with the launch of Avalanche (AVAX) trading.According to an announcement published to its website on Wednesday, HashKey has listed Avalanche on Thursday with the caveat that access to AVAX trading will be reserved for professional investors, as defined by Hong Kong’s Securities & Futures Commission (SFC).Photo by Wance Paleri on UnsplashAccessible to professional investorsTo meet the criteria as a professional investor in Hong Kong, individuals must possess an investment portfolio valued at a minimum of 8 million Hong Kong dollars, roughly equivalent to $1 million. This decision sets AVAX apart from other widely traded cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ether, which remain accessible to retail investors in Hong Kong. While Tether (USDT) enjoys retail status, the majority of altcoins on HashKey will remain the preserve of professional investors. This move is a direct result of the SFC’s proactive stance on regulating the rapidly expanding crypto market in Hong Kong. Since the introduction of regulated retail crypto trading in the Chinese autonomous territory in August, the SFC has imposed rigorous requirements on exchanges. HashKey mandates users to deposit a minimum of 10,000 Hong Kong dollars or $1,500 into their exchange accounts as part of the Know Your Customer (KYC) verification process.Low trading volumeAmid these regulatory challenges, HashKey Hong Kong currently reports a 24-hour trading volume of approximately $5.3 million, significantly lower than its global peers. This lower trading volume suggests that stringent regulations may be affecting the exchange’s ability to attract retail investors effectively. The path to regulatory compliance in Hong Kong has been anything but smooth for crypto exchanges. Reports indicate that these platforms have collectively invested over $25 million in establishing the requisite infrastructure for obtaining a Hong Kong Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license. It was reported earlier this year that crypto firms are forking out between $2.55 million and $25.5 million in order to secure a VASP trading license.Despite the challenges, HashKey is looking at various avenues in bringing its offering forward. Earlier this month the firm signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with insurer OneDegree. That collaboration could be significant as it should lead to the assets of HashKey users being protected and insured on the platform. That would solve a major issue for participants in the crypto space amid the backdrop of ongoing platform failures and hacks.JPEX collapseEven as regulatory efforts intensify, the crypto industry in Hong Kong has not been impervious to bad actors. The recent collapse of the JPEX crypto exchange earlier this month serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing risks associated with the industry. Described as the largest financial fraud in Hong Kong’s history, JPEX faced allegations of embezzling over $178 million of investors’ funds. Notably, JPEX was operating without SFC registration at the time of the alleged embezzlement. In response to such incidents, the SFC has taken proactive measures by publishing a warning list of crypto exchanges considered non-compliant within the Chinese autonomous territory.
