Interbank settlement

The collaboration aims to enable interbank settlement of US dollar transactions in India’s Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), positioning it as an alternative trading center to Singapore and Dubai. That’s according to a report from Bloomberg, published on Monday. The participating banks in this pioneering initiative include HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank, and JPMorgan’s own banking unit at GIFT City.

Onyx blockchain

The blockchain project, utilizing JPMorgan’s Onyx platform, aims to expand the capacity of the existing settlement system. Kaustubh Kulkarni, JPMorgan’s senior country officer, stated that the platform will enable the participating banks to process instant transactions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By leveraging blockchain technology, the interbank settlement process will become faster and more efficient, overcoming the current limitations of time and availability.

Onyx blockchain was established in 2020 and serves as JPMorgan’s digital assets network. It was specifically designed with interbank settlement and wholesale payment transactions in mind.

Reduced settlement time

Under the prevailing interbank settlement system, transactions could take several hours to complete, and settlement is not available on weekends or public holidays. JPMorgan’s blockchain pilot, however, will remove these barriers, as Kulkarni explained: “By leveraging blockchain technology to facilitate transactions on a 24x7 basis, processing is instantaneous and enables GIFT City banks to support their own time-zone and operating hours.”

This initiative not only addresses the operational challenges of interbank settlement but also serves New Delhi’s strategic goal of positioning GIFT City as a prominent alternative trading center. With the implementation of blockchain technology, GIFT City can provide a competitive advantage by offering efficient, real-time transaction capabilities.

The success of Onyx is evident, as the bank reportedly processed nearly $700 billion in short-term loan transactions through the platform as of April 2023. The utilization of Onyx for the interbank dollar transfers in India further demonstrates JPMorgan’s commitment to exploring the potential of blockchain technology in the financial sector.

Positioning for de-dollarization

Additionally, JPMorgan’s involvement in this initiative aligns with the evolving landscape of global finance. The bank’s currency strategists have highlighted signs of emerging de-dollarization, with the US dollar’s share declining in foreign exchange reserves and exports. The adoption of blockchain technology for dollar transactions not only improves efficiency but also aligns with the changing dynamics of the global financial system.

As JPMorgan launches the pilot project in collaboration with the Indian banks, the coming months will be crucial for analyzing the experiences and outcomes. This initiative marks a significant step towards streamlining financial operations, embracing innovative solutions, and strengthening India’s role in the adoption of blockchain technology within its financial infrastructure.

Cake DeFi Co-Founder Launches Ordzaar Ordinals Marketplace

Cake DeFi Co-Founder Launches Ordzaar Ordinals MarketplaceU-Zyn Chua, Singaporean Co-Founder and CTO of Singapore-based Cake DeFi, has launched Ordzaar, a Bitcoin Ordinals marketplace. In a social media post on Friday, the marketplace described itself as “a decentralized & trustless marketplace for #Bitcoin Ordinals, bridging the gap between trustlessness and true decentralization.” The Ordinals protocol has been enabled due to the SegWit and Taproot upgrades to the bitcoin protocol. It’s a system for numbering satoshis, the smallest denomination of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. The protocol assigns each satoshi with a serial number, using that number to track them across transactions.By taking this approach, each individual satoshi becomes unique, allowing additional data to be attached to them in a process called inscription. The project has hit the ground running, with its website online and a step by step guide released, instructing new users in how to buy and sell Ordinals on the marketplace.Releasing a press release to publicize the launch, the project pointed out that “the lack of a fully decentralized Ordinals marketplace [poses] a major challenge”, given a backdrop in which Bitcoin Ordinal inscriptions have surged in popularity over the course of recent weeks. Elaborating on that point, the team stated: “There is a growing need for a reliable and secure platform that allows buyers and sellers to transact in a decentralized manner, giving them complete control over their assets, this is where Ordzaar comes in.”Asia Ordinals marketplace firstOrdzaar represents the first ever Bitcoin Ordinals marketplace based within the Asian region. Alongside U-Zyn Chua, the team behind the project implicates three other seasoned crypto-natives with a wealth of experience in crypto, bitcoin, and blockchain. Cake DeFi colleague Naqib Noor assumes the role of Co-Founder and Development Lead. As well as being Co-Founder, Chua is the project’s Lead Researcher. In an effort to showcase the brand new marketplace, the Ordzaar team sponsored and participated in the Bitcoin Ordinals 2023 conference in Miami late last week, with Chua appearing as a speaker at the event. The Co-Founder told Blockhead that:“Ordinals have proven that Bitcoin is more than just a peer-to-peer payment system and has demonstrated a new, high-value use case for the longest-running cryptocurrency. As the industry continues to build and innovate, Ordinals have the potential to unlock even more value on the Bitcoin blockchain, and will lift the entire crypto ecosystem as a whole.”NFTs took on a life all of their own with a market surge, tripling in value to $250 million in 2020. While that largely Ethereum-based market has cooled somewhat since then, it nonetheless continues to broaden and establish itself. Chua believes that Bitcoin-centric Ordinals can take a large slice of that development. “Along with the explosive adoption seen in the traditional ETH NFT market, we expect to see a similar trajectory in the Ordinals space,” he explained. In a tweet published on Saturday, Crypto journalist and investment team member at Seoul-based crypto venture capital firm #Hashed, Joseph Young, referred to changing dynamics within the NFT space, with relative newcomers Blur and Tensor taking on OpenSea and Magic Eden. Not short on confidence, the Ordinals team responded, stating: “And Ordzaar will be dominating decentralized Ordinals and BRC20 trading.” The overarching crypto space continues its progression at pace, and it will be intriguing to see how Ordinals, together with new marketplaces like Ordzaar, perform as the industry trundles forward.Photo by Dmitry Demidko on Unsplash

PantherTrade applies for Hong Kong trading license

PantherTrade applies for Hong Kong trading licensePantherTrade (Hong Kong) Limited, a subsidiary of Futu Holdings, had been reported last month as being in the process of preparing a licensing application to trade in Hong Kong. According to recent reports in local media, it appears that the company has now submitted such an application to the Hong Kong authorities.Photo by Simon Zhu on UnsplashKey appointmentsThis move aligns with the broader trend, as a total of six companies have submitted applications to the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong. It’s understood that PantherTrade submitted its application on Nov. 15. The move follows a similar application made by Hong Kong-based Meex Holdings on Oct. 12.Key strategic appointments within PantherTrade underscore the company’s vision for its virtual asset trading venture. Chen Zhihu, former Investment Director at Huobi Asset Management (Hong Kong), has joined as a director. The corporate establishment of PantherTrade in March also saw the addition of Hong Yimin, while the initial director, Fang Xingzhi, has a background with Jingdong Securities Co., Ltd.Interest from mainland ChinaRegulatory attention has intensified on PantherTrade and another applicant, Yax, affiliated with Tiger Brokers employees, according to reports from Nikkei Asia. Yax is another platform with mainland China ties, which was reported in October as intending to apply for a license to trade within Hong Kong. It’s understood that the local entity of Chinese enterprise blockchain firm OK Group, OKX Hong Kong FinTech Company Limited, submitted its own trading license application on Nov. 16.Licensing uptakeHong Kong’s regulatory environment has undergone a significant shift, with the city granting the first licenses to cryptocurrency companies under a new framework in August of the current year. The regulatory changes, effective in 2023, allow retail investors to trade crypto on exchanges licensed by the SFC. Importantly, the city has removed the restriction on crypto trading, no longer confining it to professionals with a minimum of $1 million in bankable assets. This regulatory evolution is part of Hong Kong’s broader strategy to position itself as an international hub for cryptocurrencies. The city aims to attract fresh capital and talent, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic. The licensing race among virtual asset trading platforms signifies a pivotal phase in Hong Kong’s vision to lead the digital asset industry in Asia. There had been some short-lived concern that momentum was moving against Hong Kong’s efforts to further the Web3 sector when it emerged recently that crypto derivatives platform Bitget was exiting the Hong Kong market and abandoning efforts to secure a trading license. That concern dissipated when Bitget’s motivations became clearer, following BGX, a related Bitget entity, making an investment into BC Technology Group, the owner of the already Hong Kong-licensed OSL exchange.PantherTrade’s application for a virtual asset exchange license in Hong Kong adds momentum to the city’s evolving crypto landscape. The strategic hires and the broader industry trend highlight the growing significance of Hong Kong in the global digital asset arena. As the regulatory framework becomes more conducive, the city aims to foster innovation and become a key player in the international crypto space.
