Positive market sentiment ahead of Bitcoin halving

Markets·February 07, 2024, 2:23 AM

Seychelles-incorporated crypto exchange platform Bitget recently released findings from a study on Bitcoin's upcoming halving, revealing that the vast majority of surveyed investors predict bitcoin will achieve a new all-time high (ATH) in 2024. Separately, other market commentators and analysts appear to be bullish on bitcoin ahead of the scheduled cut in Bitcoin mining rewards.

84% anticipate new bitcoin ATH

The study, based on anonymized data from 9,748 participants worldwide, focused on investor perceptions surrounding the halving's impact on their investment decisions.

84% of participants anticipate a new ATH for bitcoin during the next bull run, with only East Europe showing a percentage lower than 80%. Over 50% predict bitcoin's price to be between $30,000 and $60,000 by the time the halving occurs in April. Meanwhile, 30% foresee the bitcoin unit price going higher than $60,000.

Off the back of the data that has arisen via the study, Bitget managing director Gracy Chen suggested that it is indicative that 2024 will be a significant year for the bitcoin market.

Crypto investment plans

Approximately 70% express plans to increase their crypto investments, with the highest conviction in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and East Europe regions. Western European investors are characterized as "short-term cautious" and "long-term optimistic."

In addition to the Bitget study, many market commentators appear to have arrived at a similar conclusion. In July of last year, Standard Chartered Bank forecasted a 2024 unit price for bitcoin of $120,000. The bank reaffirmed that view last month, going further still in stating that by 2025, it expected bitcoin to reach a price of $200,000, largely due to capital inflows into spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which were approved in the United States in January.

Broader market sentiment

Taking to social media on Monday, crypto analyst Charles Edwards of Capriole Investments proposed a potential 500% price return for bitcoin if a bullish halving pattern plays out. Edwards envisions bitcoin reaching $280,000 in 2025. Like Standard Chartered, he cites the January bitcoin ETF launch as the driving force, likening it to a "second halving." He argues that major technological developments have historically seen quicker rates of adoption.

Crypto trading analyst Michaël van de Poppe predicts a pre-halving surge to $48,000 and an eventual breakout toward an all-time high in Q3/Q4 of 2024. The next Bitcoin halving is expected in April 2024, historically associated with increased scarcity and subsequent price surges.

Pseudonymous macroeconomist @Micro2Macr0 took to the X social media platform on Monday, stating:

"Only 2.5 months till the #Bitcoin #Halving. The world is getting more unstable and you have the greatest hedge ever invented sitting in front of you. What are you waiting for?"

Meanwhile, "British HODL" warned that recent developments may result in a break from previous trading patterns. He stated:

"Everyone says 12 months after the halving the shock starts for #Bitcoin price. . . . I think there is a high likelihood that the ETF’s change the cycle you’re expecting. Be aware of that.”

Bit Origin makes first purchase following DOGE treasury announcement

Bit Origin, the Nasdaq-listed (BTOG) pork processor turned crypto mining infrastructure firm, has acquired 40.5 million Dogecoin (DOGE), the company’s first purchase of the world’s largest memecoin by market cap since it announced that it was establishing a Dogecoin treasury. In a press release published on July 17, the Singapore-headquartered company with operations in the United States, Canada and China, set out that it would become the “first publicly listed company on a major US exchange to accumulate Dogecoin as a core asset.”Photo by Kanchanara on Unsplash$500 million treasury fundingThe firm outlined that it had entered into agreements with accredited investors, implicating the sale of $400 million in Class A ordinary shares in the company. An additional $100 million unlocked via convertible debt brought funding for its Dogecoin treasury to $500 million. Jinghai Jiang, Bit Origin’s CEO and Chairman, asserted that “what started as a joke has evolved into a globally liquid asset with a payments utility.” Jiang asserted that very few digital assets match the settlement speed and scale of community that Dogecoin offers. X Money potentialIn particular, he singled out the potential use of DOGE for X Money, a new payment system that is in the process of being established by Elon Musk’s X social media platform. Alongside many proponents of the cryptocurrency, Bit Origin is hoping that Musk will implement the use of DOGE to power X money. Jiang added:“In an age of broken institutions, Doge embodies a shared culture of optimism and resilience that transcends existing political and financial systems.” On social media, the company outlined that it believes in “Dogecoin not just as a meme, but as a future payments backbone.” Having utilized the services of Chardan Capital Markets as a placement agent, the company has already completed an initial closing of $15 million under the convertible debt facility that has been established.  On July 21, Bit Origin published another press release, detailing the acquisition of 40,543,745 DOGE with the memecoin holding having been purchased at an average acquisition cost of $0.2466 per DOGE.  Nearing inflection point for paymentsCommenting on the development, Jiang stated:“From our experience in mining, we understand the tradeoffs that define proof-of-work systems. We see Dogecoin’s utility potential for micropayments nearing an inflection point, driven by renewed developer activity and broader institutional interest in tokenization.” Dogecoin emerged in December 2013 having been developed by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus as a joke. The project borrowed much of its code from Bitcoin. Despite having originated as a joke, the project has developed a sizeable community. The digital asset currently holds a market capitalization of $40.5 billion, according to CoinMarketCap data.  Bit Origin rebranded from China Xiangtai Food Co., Ltd. in April 2022. Up until that point, it had been involved in the pork processing business. The company pivoted to crypto mining, partnering with MineOne on a Wyoming mining facility in the United States. The facility was ordered to be shut down by the former Biden administration on the basis of it being a national security risk to have a Chinese project located within a mile of a U.S. Air Force base that houses nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Axie Infinity Moves Further Mainstream with App Store Release

Axie Infinity Moves Further Mainstream with App Store ReleaseThe developer of Axie Infinity, one of Asia’s most iconic Web3 projects to date, has released a version of its latest game on Apple’s App Store.Photo by James Yarema on UnsplashGame adoption strategyAxie Infinity’s Origins game is a card-based strategy game that allows players to collect, own and use a limitless variety of creatures to take into combat. Sky Mavis, the Singapore-headquartered developer behind Axie Infinity, has taken an interesting approach to bring about adoption for what will ultimately be a Web3 game.Initially, the game was launched on iOS with zero Web3 aspects to it. NFTs will not feature. Players will be given free non-NFT “starter characters.” That’s an entirely different approach to the one employed on the original Axie Infinity game. In that instance, players had to acquire NFT-based characters, by either renting or buying them, in order to participate in the game from the outset. While those starter characters will remain non-NFT in nature, the plan is to facilitate players in purchasing NFT-based characters at a later stage, as they progress within the game. Axie Infinity Co-Founder and COO Aleksander Leonard Larsen explained the strategy in an interview with Decrypt:“Starter Axies will remain as non-NFTs, but eventually as people buy other Axies in app we will want [to] turn them into NFTs.”App Store listingIt appears that the firm has been working on an Apple App Store listing for quite some time already. Larsen explained: “We have been in touch with Apple for about two years now, after a lot of trial and error, the current version is a lite version of Axie Origins with more to follow.”In a social media post, the project confirmed the significance of the listing: “We believe this is the first time that Apple has agreed to make an externally-purchased NFT usable on the App Store.” The initial step to getting listed on the large application platforms started out with a feature-limited Origins listing on the Malaysian version of the Google PlayStore in December 2022, before getting listed on that platform on a broader basis. The project outlined that it was following a similar strategy with Apple. This release will see the Axie Infinity Origin game listed on the Apple App Store relative to the following markets: Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The expectation is that the game will be listed in more territories as matters progress.Token price increaseAs the game runs on Sky Mavis’s Ronin network, an Ethereum sidechain, players who own Axie NFTs will still be able to utilize them in gameplay via the iOS version. The significance of the listing wasn’t lost on Axie Infinity community members. The unit price of the Axie Infinity Shards ($AXS) token, a governance token for the Axie Infinity gaming ecosystem, increased by 8% on Wednesday.Axie has proven to be a standout Web3 project for the Asian region. Axie’s developer, Sky Mavis is headquartered in Singapore although the project first emerged via its Vietnam-based development team. The original Axie game, which captured the imagination of crypto-enthusiasts more so than traditional gamers due to its ‘play-to-earn’ model, really came into its own during the pandemic. In particular, the game garnered a lot of adoption in the Philippines due to the opportunity it presented to Filipinos to earn tokens as a result of gameplay.
