Zetrix launches product to simplify KYC for Chinese nationals

Web3 & Enterprise·October 07, 2024, 7:21 AM

Zetrix, a layer-1 blockchain project for real-world applications, has launched an electronic Know Your Customer (KYC) verification product for Chinese nationals.

The Malaysian enterprise, which is a subsidiary of digital services company My E.G. Services Berhad (MYEG), has launched ZCert. The offering is available to Chinese nationals who opt to have their digital identities published to the Xinghuo BF network, a Chinese national blockchain infrastructure network developed under the guidance of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and managed by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

First-of-its-kind application

Zetrix acts as an international super-node relative to the Xinghuo blockchain. In a press release published by PR Newswire on Oct. 3, the company outlined that ZCert had been launched as a first-of-its-kind application, enabling Chinese nationals “to be authenticated and verified digitally overseas, paving the way for a seamless, efficient, and secure verification process for verifiers and identity holders. ”

The service simplifies the issue of identity verification for verifiers located outside of China, as a consequence of Zetrix’s integration with the Xinghuo BIF network.

Connecting to ‘China Web3’

Xinghuo signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Zetrix’s parent company, MYEG, to establish the international super-node back in November 2022. The tie-up was seen as an opportunity to provide access to Chinese government agencies and businesses internationally.

At the time, MYEG Managing Director and Zetrix Co-Founder Wong Thean Soon said that “with the commencement of the Xinghuo International Supernode, the rest of the world can connect and be part of the China Web 3 evolution that will promote the establishment of international communities and facilitate global trade and finance.”

On this occasion, Wong said that the new product “enables a new wave of services powered by smart contracts.” He added that KYC processes can be simplified and automated, while “user data is retained by users at all times and only critical information is shared in an encrypted manner."

The company has already digitized Chinese driving licenses for the purpose of overseas verification. Furthermore, it has plans to expand its offering beyond ID verification soon. In April of this year, Zetrix and MYEG signed an MOU with MaiCapital, a Hong Kong-based virtual assets manager, with a view towards collaborating on the launch of a digital asset fund or digital asset-based exchange-traded fund (ETF).

Last year Zetrix engaged in a pilot project with the Bank of China with the aim of offering supply chain financing products. On a similar theme, its parent company entered into a partnership with the Philippines Bureau of Customs (BOC) and Cargo Data Exchange Center Inc. (CDEC), also in 2023. The collaboration involved the use of Zetrix’s ZTrade product, a Web3 platform that enables digitized trade document verification.

Zetrix launched its ZETRIX token in October 2023 through an initial exchange offering (IEO) facilitated by the Coinstore exchange.

Crypto’s four-year cycle may matter less amid shifting macro forces, report says

Bitcoin’s long-standing four-year market cycle tied to halving events may be losing influence, according to a new outlook from crypto exchange Bybit and research firm Block Scholes that examines market conditions through 2026. The report suggests that Bitcoin price action may be increasingly influenced by macroeconomic policy, institutional participation, and market structure rather than by new supply reductions. It says historical cycles have tended to track changes in global liquidity, often measured by global M2, and that this relationship has become more visible, while Bitcoin continues to respond to shifts in expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts.Photo by Pawel Czerwinski on UnsplashETFs reshaping demand dynamicsThe analysis points to structural changes in demand, citing the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs and the growth of corporate digital asset treasuries (DATs). The report says ETF flows and corporate balance-sheet allocations are playing a larger role in price formation than retail trading. That shift is disrupting the traditional capital rotation from Bitcoin into Ethereum and then into smaller altcoins and memecoins. As a result, the report suggests broad altcoin rallies may be harder to ignite, with gains depending on whether assets can be incorporated into institutional products such as ETFs. On the macro front, the report says markets are pricing in further Federal Reserve easing, with looser financial conditions potentially supporting a closer relationship between Bitcoin and major stock indexes despite recent underperformance versus U.S. equities. Based on options pricing, the report estimates a 10.3% implied probability that Bitcoin reaches $150,000 by the end of 2026. At present, Bitcoin is trading slightly above $91,000. Index criteria and Japan policy in viewThe analysis also highlights policy risks, including potential volatility tied to concerns over the possible exclusion of Strategy from major stock indexes, which could affect companies holding digital assets on their balance sheets. That risk has since eased after MSCI paused a proposal that would have excluded firms with digital asset reserves, though Benchmark analyst Mark Palmer cautioned that the issue could resurface in future rule reviews. The Bybit-Block Scholes report also cites potential policy tightening by the Bank of Japan later this year as another source of cross-asset risk, following its December rate hike of 25 basis points to a 30-year high of 0.75%. RWA and stablecoinsOne area of focus in the report for 2026 is real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, which it describes as building on the stablecoin adoption that gathered pace last year. That view is echoed in a separate outlook from Moody’s, cited by Cointelegraph, which says fiat-backed stablecoins and tokenized bank deposits are functioning as “digital cash” for settlement, liquidity management, and collateral movement. Moody’s estimates stablecoins processed about $9 trillion in on-chain settlement volume in 2025 and projects banks, asset managers, and infrastructure providers could invest more than $300 billion in digital finance by 2030. As an example, Moody’s cited JPMorgan’s U.S. dollar–denominated deposit token, JPM Coin, as a way digital-cash layers can operate on top of existing banking systems. The bank’s Kinexys unit plans to work with Digital Asset to bring JPM Coin to Digital Asset’s Canton Network in a phased rollout during 2026. This follows JPMorgan’s expansion of the project onto Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network Base for institutional clients.

Metaplanet targeting 21K Bitcoin by 2026

Earlier this month Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company, said that it was targeting 10,000 Bitcoin in 2025 but the company has raised the bar once again, planning on an acquisition of 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. On Jan. 5, Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich set out a number of objectives for 2025. Among them was a goal for the company to acquire 10,000 Bitcoin in 2025. Gerovich explained that the firm intended to utilize “the most accretive capital market tools available” in order for Metaplanet to meet that target.Photo by André François McKenzie on Unsplash2025-2026 Bitcoin PlanAbout three weeks after the Metaplanet CEO announced that ambition, the company published a press release on Jan. 28 detailing its 2025-2026 Bitcoin Plan, which goes much further.  The plan outlines that 10,000 Bitcoin remains the target for 2025 but that the company has adopted the strategy to accumulate 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. Gerovich stated that since Metaplanet embraced the Bitcoin Standard on April 8, 2024, the company has experienced exponential growth. Gerovich added: “The market has recognized Metaplanet as Tokyo’s preeminent Bitcoin company, and we are seizing this momentum to solidify our position as a global leader. Our vision is to lead the Bitcoin renaissance in Japan and emerge as one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders globally. This plan is our commitment to that future.” Adopting MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin playbookMetaplanet has adopted the Bitcoin playbook first pioneered by U.S. business intelligence company turned Bitcoin development firm MicroStrategy. In short, that playbook involves financing Bitcoin purchases with debt. In this way, the company can capitalize on Bitcoin’s historical trend of positive returns over time, using convertible notes and equity to facilitate that.  The practice also creates a feedback loop in so far as MicroStrategy buys Bitcoin, resulting in the Bitcoin unit price increases. The MicroStrategy stock price goes up. Demand for MicroStrategy’s stock and debt goes up, enabling the company to buy more Bitcoin. In its press release, Metaplanet looked back on what had been achieved in terms of its Bitcoin strategy in 2024. In Q4 2024, the company achieved a Bitcoin yield of 309.82%, following on from a 41.7% Bitcoin yield in Q3.  At the close of the year, the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company held 1,761 Bitcoin, purchased at an average Bitcoin unit price of 11.85 million yen ($76,411). Shareholder growth has seen the company surpass 50,000 shareholders. Meanwhile, share trading volume has increased 430x, year-on-year. Since the firm adopted the Bitcoin Standard in April 2024, the company’s market capitalization has grown by 7,000%. Last month, the company celebrated the milestone of having reached a $1 billion market cap. Asia’s largest equity capital raise for BitcoinThe company has dubbed its new plan “The 21 Million Plan.” It will comprise the issuance of 21 million shares by means of moving strike warrants. Gerovich confirmed on X that at $750 million, the plan will involve Asia’s largest-ever public equity capital raise to buy Bitcoin.
