Immediate response

In the immediate aftermath of the $70 million hack, CoinEx took action to safeguard user assets and initiate an investigation into the incident. It suspended all deposit and withdrawal services and executed an emergency shutdown of the hot wallet server. Following this, the company securely moved the remaining assets to cold storage, commencing the process of reconstructing and deploying a new wallet architecture.

The firm also engaged in an investigation, spearheaded by its wallet and security teams, to ascertain the extent of the breach. Moreover, CoinEx claims to have proactively reached out to fellow exchanges to freeze any assets related to the attack.

Haipo Yang, the Founder and CEO of CoinEx, conveyed his apologies to affected users through his personal X (formerly Twitter) account. He emphasized the team’s commitment to restoring services promptly and reassured users that their funds will remain secure.

Following up on that commitment, CoinEx published an update on the hot wallet hack on September 15 to address these concerns individually.

New wallet deployment

The exchange expects to finalize wallet upgrades within the upcoming week, after which withdrawals will gradually be phased in, subject to security evaluations. The CoinEx team is currently working on developing and deploying an entirely new and robust wallet system capable of managing activities across 211 chains and 737 assets.

The firm has outlined that each of its product lines operates independently, featuring its own risk control system. Consequently, the security incident that occurred on CoinEx will not affect the integrity of its other product lines.

In its most recent update on Tuesday, the Hong Kong crypto exchange confirmed that 80% of its wallet system has now been reconstructed. It added that it has initiated preparations to enable the withdrawal system on the platform. It stated:

”Details about the resumption of withdrawals, including specific dates, times, and arrangements, will be announced on the CoinEx website. Please stay updated on our announcements for the latest information.”

Ongoing investigation

Regarding the identity of the attacker, CoinEx has confirmed that the matter is currently under investigation. While some security firms have made attribution claims, the company is focusing primarily on deploying the new wallet architecture, restoring affected users and functionalities, and enhancing overall security.

At the same time, the company has initiated communications with the hackers in a bid to proactively seek a mutually agreeable resolution. While the incident implicates the loss of a substantial amount of funds, the firm maintains that in the context of the overall business, the sum represents only a small percentage of total assets under its management.

Exchange security remains a major challenge in the crypto sector, with hacks happening on an ongoing basis. Last week, Seychelles-headquartered peer-to-peer crypto platform Remitano acknowledged a $2.7 million hack. At the beginning of September, crypto gambling platform Stake was reported to have suffered a $41 million hack.

Korean Blockchain Experts Suggest Tackling Everyday Challenges with Blockchain Adoption

Korean Blockchain Experts Suggest Tackling Everyday Challenges with Blockchain AdoptionAt a recent blockchain conference, experts from the Korean industry proposed that the adoption of blockchain could be amplified by addressing daily challenges such as parking problems, according to a report by local news outlet Decenter. They also believe that blockchain has the potential to enhance the quality of life by fostering community solidarity. For this vision to be fully realized, they emphasized the crucial role of government policy support.Photo by Filip Filkovic Philatz on UnsplashBlockchain and parking managementOn October 30 at the 2023 Global Blockchain Incheon Conference (GBIC) in Songdo, Incheon, several applications of blockchain technology were highlighted. Kim Jung-eun, a professor at the Graduate School of Engineering at Inha University, discussed the benefits of integrating blockchain into the management of shared parking lots. She underscored that while privately opening up idle parking lots in locations such as villas can introduce concerns of theft and time violations, blockchain technology can address these challenges. By documenting vehicle details on the blockchain and controlling usage time with smart contracts, the parking process can also become more transparent and trustworthy.Enhancing a city’s image through civic unityBuilding on the theme of blockchain’s societal benefits, the conference also touched on its prospects to enhance civic unity. Kim Hyung-joon, a professor at Pai Chai University, highlighted the significance of civic solidarity in enhancing a city’s image. He drew attention to Stockholm, Sweden, lauding it as one of the happiest cities globally and emphasizing the vital role a sense of community plays in such acclaim. Professor Kim believes that promoting a robust community feeling through Web3 platforms and decentralized autonomous organizations can boost a city’s competitive edge. He stressed that this approach should be paired with policy initiatives that actively support Web3 and blockchain technologies. With the technology being mature, Kim underscored the pivotal role governments play, noting that numerous projects have been stifled by restrictive regulations.Four strategies for the Web3 industryAt the same event, Professor Park Soo-yong from the Computer Science and Engineering Department of Sogang University shared insights on strategic approaches for the burgeoning Web3 industry. He emphasized four primary strategies: bolstering the Web3 gaming and entertainment sectors, cultivating talent for the evolving digital economy, advancing digital asset innovations and financial systems, and urging transformation within governmental agencies. Professor Park highlighted the current division in jurisdiction — with the entertainment industry overseen by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the digital asset sector regulated by the Financial Services Commission. He asserted that consolidating these sectors under one unified jurisdiction could drive significant progress. In a related note, a study from Emergen Research projects a bright future for the Web3 market. It’s forecasted to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 43.7% between 2021 and 2030. This would see its revenue grow from $3.2 billion in 2021 to $81.5 billion in 2030.

Pyth Network brings Hong Kong stock pricing on-chain

Pyth Network, an oracle network that provides a bridge between blockchain smart contracts and real-world data, has added pricing data related to stocks listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) to its service offering. Data covering 85 stocksIn a social media post, the project stated that it’s “bringing the Hong Kong market onchain.” In building out the future of finance, DeFi application developers need real-world data from traditional finance sources. Pyth Network confirmed that real-time data in the case of 85 stocks listed on HKEX is now live. In announcing the development, the company disclosed that price feed data is updated every 400 milliseconds and sourced from institutional-grade venues. Once added to the Pyth Network, the data is made available on a multi-network basis across in excess of 100 blockchain networks.Photo by Anne Nygård on UnsplashGateway dataHKEX data is perceived to be significant given that it is a major global exchange, while acting as a key gateway between global and Chinese markets. Pyth Network stated: “Whether you’re building trading strategies, structured products, tokenized portfolios, or simply want access to real-world stock prices from Asia’s financial gateway, these feeds bring Hong Kong’s equity market onchain openly, instantly, and permissionlessly.” In a blog post published to its website on July 28, Pyth Network outlined that this data addition accounts for data related to companies that have a combined equity market value of over $5 trillion. The project stated that this new data is “giving builders, traders, and protocols around the world direct, real-time access to one of the largest financial markets on earth.” Improving access to APAC equitiesThe project made the point that for many years, access to real-time data from the primary markets within the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has been cost-prohibitive. It claimed that data terminals with this information can cost in excess of $30,000 per year. Pyth Network feels that with its market offering now incorporating HKEX market data, it is opening up access to this data for developers and DeFi protocol projects. This development is the latest in a string of updates that the project has brought about recently. Earlier this month, the project announced a partnership with tokenized real-world asset (RWA) provider Ondo Finance. The deal sees the duo oversee the launch of a USDY/USD price feed, which will be distributed by Pyth across 65 blockchain ecosystems. Similar to its latest unlocking of HKEX equity data, in June it enabled access to real-time onchain pricing related to the UK’s most actively traded equities. Going forward, the company states that “foundational market data will be open, composably integrated, updated in real-time, and available to anyone with an internet connection.” In March 2024, Pyth’s price feeds went live on Injective inEVM, an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible layer-2 rollup developed by Injective Labs. At the time of writing, the unit price of PYTH, Pyth Network’s native utility and governance token, was $0.1204, according to CoinGecko data.
