Korean Cafe Attracts Customers with NFTs

A South Korean cafe owner has employed non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as an ingenious marketing strategy to attract customers.

NFT holder benefits

In an interview with Korean crypto news outlet Digital Asset, Yoo Hyun, the entrepreneurial business owner, explained that he was seeking a strong marketing tool to capture the attention of the NFT market. Yoo was interested in seeing if his cafe could remain profitable while also offering substantial benefits to its customers.

Since April 2022, Yoo has released a total of 50 Ethereum-based NFTs related to his cafe, Hide Me, Please (HMP), in two separate batches of 25 each. The first set of NFTs grants holders a free cup of coffee or drink daily for life, while the second set offers an extra drink or dessert with each drink purchased.

 

Increased revenue

This unique NFT initiative has led to increased revenue for the cafe. Kim Dae-sung, the CFO of HMP, explained that the cafe’s monthly revenue increased by 15% compared to the same period last year.

HMP is currently selling 500 NFTs as a third set and plans to release more depending on demand. Yoo highlighted the importance of an appealing interior design and tempting desserts, as NFT holders visiting for a free coffee may be enticed to purchase a dessert as well.

 

Regular customers

Yoo asserts that the food and beverage industry hinges on retaining regular customers and believes NFTs can help achieve that objective. HMP aspires to become a community-based platform, and according to Kim, many digital artists are interested in the space that the cafe provides because it enables them to connect with clients. Collaborations often take place, and while the cafe charges for food and drinks, it does not charge for space rental. This approach fosters a positive impression and contributes to a strong brand image.

 

High-quality cafe

At present, about 5% of HMP’s customers hold NFT memberships. Yoo and Kim plan to increase this number to 10% but no higher, as excessive reliance on NFT members could jeopardize the business. They underlined the significance of remaining a high-quality cafe, staying true to the core foundation of their enterprise. As they anticipate the growth of the Web 3.0 ecosystem, Yoo and Kim believe that with continued efforts, HMP will gain even greater value.

Exploring the motivations behind Crescendo’s multi-million dollar investment in LINE NEXTIn a move that has made headlines as the largest investment made in the Asian blockchain and Web3 industry this year, Seoul-based private equity firm Crescendo Equity Partners has decided to invest $140 million in LINE NEXT, the NFT business arm of Tokyo-based Internet giant LINE Corporation. According to South Korean news outlet DealSite, this can be seen as a strategic decision to leverage LINE’s global network, which dominates the Japanese market. Considering Crescendo’s track record of successful investments in various IT companies, the industry is keen to see whether the firm can replicate this success in the rapidly growing blockchain sector.Photo by Pepi Stojanovski on UnsplashConsortium takes controlAccording to the South Korean Financial Supervisory Service’s (FSS) Data Analysis, Retrieval and Transfer (DART) System on Thursday (local time), Crescendo’s special purpose company (SPC) established to manage the LINE NEXT investment dubbed Ludwig Holdings will act as a third party in the investment by providing KRW 130 billion in paid-in capital. Other financial investors will also contribute KRW 52 billion through a consortium formed with Crescendo, bringing the total investment amount to KRW 182 billion, or approximately $140 million.As a result of this capital increase, 795,401 new shares will be issued. Crescendo’s consortium will thus secure a 50% stake plus one more share, making it the largest shareholder group. However, among individual shareholders, LY Corporation will maintain its position as the single largest shareholder. The existing number of shares was 795,400. Crescendo plans to utilize its third fund, which raised KRW 1.1 trillion in 2021, to provide the funds by next February.Smooth transitionAlthough the consortium has become the largest shareholder group, there is no indication of an immediate change in LINE NEXT’s current management board. This decision is likely because blockchain development companies should be run by executives who are familiar with the unique ins and outs of the blockchain industry. The firm’s current CEO, Ko Young-su, is an IT expert who had been responsible for financial technology (fintech) operations at LINE Corp.Web3 expansionThrough the investment, LINE NEXT plans to popularize Web3 by expanding its global platform and developing new services. This includes DOSI, a global mobile NFT marketplace app for trading digital products, which will be integrated with LINE’s Japanese NFT marketplace LINE NFT. DOSI’s launch is scheduled for January next year.Navigating uncharted territoryMany believe that LINE NEXT’s ambitions for dominating the blockchain sector aligning with Crescendo’s tradition of investing in promising IT companies is sufficient justification for the major funding decision. However, some observers find the development surprising, considering the fact that it is rare for private equity firms in Korea to make such large investments in blockchain firms — an industry that has mostly been an unpopular choice for investors, likely due to its close association with crypto assets. Indeed, Crescendo’s interest in the company may have been partly driven by the fact that it is more focused on blockchain technology itself rather than crypto.“Crescendo seems to have focused on LINE’s global network, which pushed it to invest in its subsidiary. Considering the popularity of NFTs and other related projects last year, expanding this area of business seems plausible,” said an anonymous source from the investment banking industry. “Peter Thiel [the billionaire entrepreneur and venture capitalist who sponsored Crescendo] is known to have a keen interest in blockchain technology and is actively making investments in the sector, which probably made the decision-making process much smoother.”This development signifies yet another shift in the evolving business landscape, where parts of the industry that have not been traditionally associated with blockchain are increasingly recognizing the potential of its role in the future of industry and technology.

Crypto.com tops USD-supported crypto exchange trading volume in July

Singapore-headquartered crypto exchange platform Crypto.com has boosted its standing amongst its peers by achieving the largest spot crypto trading volume for the month of July where USD-supported exchanges are concerned. According to data published by The Block, the exchange platform achieved $68.85 billion in spot trading volume among USD-supported exchanges in July out of an overall total of $178.84 billion. American exchange platform Coinbase was next in the rankings, with a July trading volume total of $63.97 billion.Photo by Alexander Grey on UnsplashInstitutional client boost It’s understood that the uptick in trading volume experienced by the exchange platform is as a consequence of an increase in the number of institutional clients using Crypto.com’s trading services.  Giuseppe Giuliani, the managing director of Crypto.com, told Cointelegraph that more institutional clients are using the platform due to an improved product offering, together with stronger market conditions. Giuliani stated: “This growth has been primarily driven by the acquisition of new clients on the platform, both large institutions and advanced retail traders, and is being supported by stronger market conditions in 2024.” Giuliani told The Block that growth on the platform has played out over the medium term, stating:  "We have seen incremental market share growth month on month over the last 18 months.” Driving Bitcoin unit price Institutional adoption has been a developing theme in 2024. Some analysts have pointed to its importance in the attainment of an ever higher Bitcoin unit price. Crypto market analyst Willy Woo has suggested recently that a 3% allocation by institutions could lead to a Bitcoin unit price of $700,000. In its most recent quarterly report, global investment bank Canaccord Genuity outlined that there is growing institutional adoption relative to spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The launch of spot Ethereum ETF products in the U.S. last month is also understood to have helped towards an improved monthly trading volume for Crypto.com. Giuliani stated: “In the week of July 21 during which Ether ETF was launched, we have seen double-digit growth in our exchange’s Ether spot and perpetual volume week-on-week, building on consecutive weeks of robust volume growth.” Furthermore, the exchange platform claims to have seen increased interest and market participation from TradFi firms. Growing through licensing and sponsorship Crypto.com has attempted to further its market impact worldwide, including in Hong Kong, having applied for a trading license in the Chinese autonomous territory in February, and succeeding in that endeavor more recently according to subsequent reports. It received a license from the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in 2022, with the FCA awarding the company a further license, an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license, in 2023. High profile sports sponsorships is another marketing strategy the firm has pursued in recent years. The company has claimed to be reaping the rewards of these deals, which it has made in Formula 1 (F1) motor racing and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
