Kiln raises $17M to fund APAC growth

Web3 & Enterprise·January 19, 2024, 3:16 AM

Kiln, the Paris-based Ethereum staking platform, has successfully secured $17 million in a recent funding round, as revealed in a press release on Thursday.

Round led by 1kx

The financing round was spearheaded by 1kx, with participation from Crypto.com, Wintermute Ventures, Thailand’s KXVC and Hong Kong’s LBank and IOSG. This infusion of capital brings Kiln's total funding to $35 million, marking a milestone in the company's growth trajectory. The latest funding follows a previous investment of $17.6 million in 2022 from Illuminate Financial, LeadBlock Partners, Sparkle Ventures, Alven and Blue Yard Capital, among others.

Kiln opted not to disclose the valuation associated with the recent funding round. In 2021, Canadian blockchain infrastructure and staking firm Figment reached unicorn status with a $1.4 billion valuation.

The Kiln platform has witnessed significant growth, increasing its staked assets under management to $4.2 billion in 2023. Acknowledging that growth on Jan. 4, Fred Lardieg, partner at Abu Dhabi sovereign fund Mubadala wrote:

”This little-known French startup called @Kiln_finance has been killing it in the #Ethereum #Staking space, by relentlessly releasing new features throughout 2023. They're now the #1 operator of Ethereum validator nodes according to @ratedw3b.”

The firm’s expansion is attributed to strategic integrations with various custody solutions, wallets and exchanges over the past year.

Regional headquarters in Singapore

The funds raised will be instrumental in facilitating Kiln's global expansion initiatives, including the establishment of its Asia-Pacific (APAC) headquarters in Singapore during the first quarter of the year. Additionally, the company aims to allocate resources for further product development to enhance its offerings in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space.

Laszlo Szabo, CEO and co-founder of Kiln, articulated the company's mission, stating:

"Our mission is to democratize value creation in the digital assets ecosystem, providing millions of users with easy access to rewards through our platform."

The funds will support Kiln's commitment to making value creation in the digital assets space more accessible globally. The company plans to use the funding not only for expansion but also to introduce additional reward mechanisms in the rapidly evolving DeFi landscape.

Regulatory uncertainty

While Ethereum staking offers users the opportunity to earn yields by validating transactions on the blockchain, the regulatory landscape remains uncertain. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken legal action against several exchanges involved in crypto staking, with SEC Chairman Gary Gensler expressing views on Ethereum-like tokens as potential securities.

Despite regulatory challenges, Kiln's staking platform caters to institutional clients, allowing them to stake assets and offer white-label solutions to their customers. With a focus on proof-of-stake blockchains, Kiln holds a significant portion of staked assets on Ethereum, exceeding $3.1 billion, according to its Dune Analytics dashboard.

1kx Founding Partner Christopher Heymann emphasized the increasing role of financial institutions in the crypto space, stating:

"Financial institutions will become a dominant force in crypto, leveraging the immense market opportunity as they stake on behalf of their customers."

By utilizing smart contracts, Kiln allows users to stake smaller amounts, overcoming the traditional barrier of a 32 ETH minimum requirement for native ether staking. This approach aligns with Kiln's goal of fostering inclusivity in the rapidly expanding world of decentralized finance.

India Offers Suggestions in the Development of G20 Crypto Guidelines

India Offers Suggestions in the Development of G20 Crypto GuidelinesIndia submitted its Presidency Note on Tuesday, contributing to the global framework for cryptocurrency regulation under the auspices of the G20, a forum comprising the world’s 20 largest economies. The document aligns itself with the guidance provided by prominent entities including the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).Photo by Swapnil Deshpandey on UnsplashKey Summit topicMany months in advance of September’s G20 Summit in New Delhi, it was clear that crypto regulation would be a key subject for discussion. The FSB’s guidelines, released in July, offer a comprehensive framework for regulating various crypto assets, particularly stablecoins, based on existing standards and principles. These guidelines encompass crucial aspects such as governance, risk management, disclosure, supervision, and cross-border collaboration. In May, the FSB’s Regional Consultative Group for Asia met in Cebu, in the Philippines. During that meeting, the FSB highlighted the risks implicated by digital assets.Published in June, the FATF guidelines put forth a universally applicable set of rules to combat money laundering and counter the risks of terrorist financing linked to cryptocurrencies. One of the main provisions is the “travel rule,” compelling crypto service providers to share customer information when conducting fund transfers. While the IMF guidelines are expected to be unveiled in August, they will encompass a synthesis paper that offers a comprehensive roadmap for crypto regulation. This roadmap is designed to reflect input from multiple stakeholders and jurisdictions.India’s supplementary additionsAmidst endorsing these global crypto guidelines, India also proposes supplementary additions, particularly highlighting the challenges faced by developing economies in the crypto realm. The document underlines that these nations may grapple with capacity and resource constraints when implementing effective crypto regulation and supervision.Furthermore, they might require more extensive access to reliable data regarding crypto activities and associated risks. Developing economies are also at a heightened risk of falling victim to illicit crypto use, including money laundering, tax evasion, and cyber-crime.In light of these concerns, India advocates for the inclusion of developing economy-specific considerations in the FSB’s guidelines. The country also urges for technical assistance and capacity-building support to be extended to these nations. Additionally, it proposes a global outreach initiative to raise awareness of the risks, commencing with nations experiencing higher levels of crypto adoption.Broadening the scopeAnother noteworthy suggestion from India is an extension of the regulatory approach beyond the G20’s scope, encompassing the broader digital economy. While recognizing that crypto is merely one facet of the sweeping digital transformation reshaping multiple sectors, India’s document underscores the need for enhanced cooperation and coordination among various stakeholders and authorities at both national and international levels. In this vein, India proposes that the G20 contemplate formulating a comprehensive framework for the digital economy. This framework should encompass a wide array of concerns, including data governance, digital taxation, digital identity, digital inclusion, and fostering digital innovation, according to the document.India’s exploration of diverse aspects related to cryptocurrency — ranging from legal status to taxation implications, central bank digital currency (CBDC) potential, and innovation possibilities — further underlines its desire to see greater international cohesion in relation to the regulation of digital assets.

Hong Kong regulator unveils stablecoin sandbox

Following December's release of proposed fiat-referenced stablecoin regulations, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has progressed further with the introduction of a stablecoin sandbox.Photo by Nextvoyage on PexelsFormulating a regulatory regimeThe regulatory sandbox, announced through a press release published to the regulator’s website on March 12, encompasses stablecoin currencies beyond the Hong Kong dollar, although the HKMA refrained from specifying particular currencies. Eddie Yue, CEO of the HKMA, emphasized the sandbox's role as a platform for constructive dialogue between the regulatory authority and the industry. Yue stated:"The sandbox arrangement serves as an effective channel for the HKMA and the industry to exchange views on the proposed regulatory regime.”Yue further noted that such engagement is pivotal for formulating regulatory requirements conducive to the sustainable and responsible growth of the stablecoin issuance business. The stablecoin sandbox finds its digital footprint within the International Financial Centre on the HKMA's website. The documentation accompanying the sandbox outlines several key requirements for potential participants. These include demonstrating genuine interest and a feasible plan for issuing fiat-referenced stablecoins in Hong Kong, as well as a concrete strategy for engagement within the sandbox. Additionally, applicants must exhibit a reasonable prospect of compliance with the proposed regulatory framework. Minimum capital requirementsOne notable regulation proposed stipulates that issuers must be Hong Kong-based entities with a minimum capital requirement of HK$25 million ($3.2 million) or 2% of the stablecoin issuance, whichever is higher. The HKMA remains vigilant regarding public announcements by sandbox participants, ensuring that such declarations do not misconstrue endorsement or accreditation from the regulatory authority. In late January, reports suggested discussions between Harvest Global Investment, RD Technologies, Venture Smart Financial Holdings and the HKMA regarding their potential entry into the sandbox. Harvest Global Investment, boasting over $200 billion in assets under management, signifies a significant player in this evolving digital assets space.RD Technologies took to the X social media platform to publicize its approval of the HKMA’s stablecoin sandbox. It also availed of the opportunity to outline that it’s in the process of launching a Hong Kong dollar (HKD)-based stablecoin, which will be known by the short-code HKDR.Hong Kong-based fintech firm AnchorX also chimed in, stating that the sandbox is “a pivotal step forward for the industry, enabling informed dialogue and collaboration between regulators and fintech innovators.” Like RD Technologies, AnchorX is also looking to get involved in the stablecoin business, having developed the AxHKD Hong Kong dollar-based stablecoin, which it is currently beta testing, in collaboration with Conflux Network. Juan Leon, crypto analyst with Bitwise Asset Management, suggested that the move is a great initiative, while calling on the U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to follow Hong Kong’s example. On the tokenization front, Hong Kong made headlines in 2023 with the issuance of the world's largest native digital bond — a green bond exceeding $750 million. Late last year, it also proposed regulations relative to tokenization of real-world assets.Guidance provided to banks on tokenization, coupled with plans for forthcoming legislation, further solidifies Hong Kong's position as a trailblazer in the realm of digital finance.
