Service shutdown within one month

The move, outlined by the firm in a notification to platform users on Friday, involves ceasing new user registrations effective immediately. Existing users will be granted access to the mining pool until Feb. 25. All mining pool-related services on OKX will be completely halted by Feb. 26.

Mining Pools data reveals that OKX holds the 36th position among the top 70 bitcoin-focused mining pools, boasting a total hash rate slightly exceeding 496 TH/s.

The decision to phase out mining pool services was attributed to "business adjustments," as communicated by OKX, though further details were not provided regarding the specific nature of these adjustments.

Previously, OKX's mining pool supported various proof-of-work cryptocurrencies and offered staking services. However, over recent years, many supported assets had been terminated. Presently, the website only displays bitcoin, litecoin and ethereum classic pool services.

Once accounted for 5% of all BTC blocks mined

OKX's bitcoin mining pool had once accounted for around 5% of the blocks mined on the network. However, a setback occurred on October 16, 2020, when the crypto exchange temporarily suspended withdrawals due to one of its private key holders “cooperating with a public security bureau in investigations.” This led to a significant drop in hashpower connected to the pool, from 9,000 PH/s to 20 PH/s. The pool's current 528 TH/s now represents less than 0.0001% of bitcoin’s total hash rate.

Industry trend forming

This strategic move by OKX reflects the evolving landscape of the crypto industry and the challenges faced by mining pools, particularly in the context of regulatory and operational adjustments within the market. The decision may even amount to a formative trend, given that global crypto exchange platform rival KuCoin made a similar move back in August.

At the time, KuCoin outlined its plans to temporarily suspend its bitcoin and litecoin mining pools. Although it suggested a temporary halt to such services, there was no indication of when such mining-related services would resume. A company spokesperson stated:

“We will see if it is needed to restart based on the market and users’ demand in the future.”

Bitcoin halving pressures

OKX’s decision to discontinue mining pool services comes ahead of bitcoin's anticipated fourth halving in April, which is expected to reduce miner rewards from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC. The halving is casting a shadow over the mining sector.

Miners' business cost per bitcoin mined is going to increase significantly. Some industry commentators speculate that the break-even point for miners will reach an unsustainable level.

NASDAQ-listed Riot Blockchain, in particular, is being singled out as potentially being susceptible due to its cost structure. Miners have had a difficult couple of years, working their way through the bear market component of the last market cycle. That period saw leading miner Core Scientific declare bankruptcy. The company has since restructured and has been relisted on the NASDAQ.

Asian Market Surge for XRP Amid Broader Market Implications

Asian Market Surge for XRP Amid Broader Market ImplicationsXRP, the cryptocurrency and native token used by real time gross settlement system, Ripple, has seen renewed activity in recent weeks in terms of trading volume. That trading volume appears to be more pronounced in Asian markets such as South Korea.©Pexels/RODNAE ProductionsThe XRP token has traded up 22% over the course of the past seven days, with a current unit price of $0.54. Trading volume has surged on South Korean exchanges such as Bithumb UpBit and Korbit where volume spiked 18%, 37% and 50% respectively over the past 24 hours. This trading activity is irregular as ordinarily the trading volume of Bitcoin and ether would account for the vast bulk of trading on the three leading Korean exchanges.Speculative interestXRP has under-performed in recent years and at the heart of its difficulties has been a multi-year legal battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States. In its complaint, the SEC has claimed that XRP is an unregistered security. Speculation in recent weeks suggests that this highly litigated battle may be drawing to a conclusion. Many commentators have suggested that either a deal will be struck or the court could soon decide to rule on the matter.During the 2017 bull market, the token reached the heady heights of a $3.40 unit price. That’s a target that the cryptocurrency has never been able to reach ever since. During the last bull market, it rose to around $1.76 for a short time in April 2021. There’s little doubt but the regulatory cloud hanging over it has suppressed the price. Much depends on the outcome of this lawsuit, not just for XRP but for crypto as a whole.Another notion driving speculative interest is the idea that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) may classify XRP as a commodity. That line of thought is more recent and follows the CFTC classifying a number of cryptocurrencies as commodities in its lawsuit against global crypto exchange Binance. In follow up comments earlier this week, CFTC Chair Roistin Behnam reiterated the claim. The very fact that the CFTC has made this claim is significant in terms of the case being pursued by the SEC, potentially weakening the SECs case. Lawyers for Ripple have made the court aware of the CFTCs claims.Crypto moving forwardCrypto traders in South Korea have been notorious in the past for pursuing speculative trends within the industry with the Kimchi Premium on Bitcoin back in the day as a stand out example. Whether speculative or not, the outcome for XRP, Ripple and the broader cryptocurrency space relative to the cryptocurrency’s regulatory status will be significant.A positive result will not just be a fillip for XRP, Ripple and Asian and other crypto traders who have speculated on such an outcome. It will also serve to provide a level of regulatory protection for all other crypto projects within the United States. A negative outcome to the lawsuit will not be ideal for XRP, Ripple and US-based crypto projects. However, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has said in the past that if innovation is driven overseas, Ripple will focus on developing its product overseas. In an interview this week Ripple President Monica Long suggested that over and above the lawsuit, crypto innovation is generally being pushed outside of the United States. Long cites Asia as taking the lead on “thoughtful crypto policy”. On that basis, it’s likely that one way or another crypto moves forward and maybe South Korean speculators will be proven right regardless of the outcome of the XRP..

SBI and TradeFinex establish 'SBI XDC Network APAC'

Japanese financial services company SBI Holdings has successfully established "SBI XDC Network APAC" in Japan, following through on an intended joint venture with TradeFinex, the driving force behind the XDC Network.Photo by William Warby on UnsplashJV company formationAt the end of September, the two companies outlined the starting point of an intended collaboration. Only three months later, SBI has come back with an update, a press release published on Dec. 27, to detail the progress that has been made thus far. According to that document, the companies established joint venture corporate entity SBI XDC Network APAC Co. Ltd. on Dec. 18. Among the directors of the new company is the President of BITPoint Japan, a wholly owned subsidiary crypto exchange business of SBI. Majority stakeholderSBI will be the majority stakeholder in the venture, holding 60% of the company’s shares while Dubai-based TradeFinex will be the minor partner, with a 40% shareholding. The press release outlines that the stakeholders will “work to expand the use case using the blockchain technology of the XDC Network in global economic activities centered on trade finance and cross-border payments, not just the handling of tokens.” With that, this enterprise-focused blockchain initiative aims to elevate the efficiency of trade finance. Going forward, it endeavors to broaden the applications of XDC Network's blockchain technology in global economic activities, with the emphasis remaining on trade finance and cross-border payments. The XDC Network, inaugurated in 2017, is a community-driven platform tailored explicitly for trade finance and payments. It introduces a smart contract system that streamlines global trade operations by tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs) such as bonds, trade assets and trade documents. Operating on a high-speed, secure and cost-effective blockchain, XDC Network aspires to transform the landscape of trade finance. SBI Group has been actively involved in various services related to the XDC Network, including being the first exchange in Japan to handle XDC tokens. This was made possible through a partnership with SBI VC Trade, a company within the SBI Group specializing in crypto asset exchange services. Corda platform proof of conceptLogo design has been completed for the new entity, while a website has also been launched. Not wasting any time, the new company has already initiated a proof-of-concept (PoC) experiment. The experiment involves connecting the XDC Network with the Corda platform from SBI R3 Japan and the Corda Bridge from IMPEL GLOBAL. The PoC experiment revolves around conducting fiat payments generated by business-to-business transactions in XDC via Corda and the Corda Bridge. Leveraging a hybrid blockchain with both private and public characteristics, the objective is to attempt to offer a seamless one-stop service that settles both private and public aspects simultaneously. The company claims that this approach achieves an efficient and smooth payment method for cross-border transactions, including international trade, outshining conventional fiat currency transactions.
