India’s SEBI head wants instant settlement to counter crypto threat

Policy & Regulation·March 15, 2024, 2:32 AM

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is set to introduce a same-day settlement cycle starting March 28, making India only the second country, following China, to adopt such a system. This move comes amidst growing competition from the cryptocurrency sector, with SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch emphasizing the need for instant settlement and tokenization to remain competitive.

Evolving market dynamics

Buch has unveiled plans aimed at enhancing the efficiency of India's capital markets through faster settlement processes. During a recent press conference, she highlighted the significance of adapting to evolving market dynamics. Buch stated:

“If our well-regulated market cannot compete with the crypto world and cannot say we also offer you tokenization and instantaneous settlement over the medium term, I won’t even say long term, you should expect investors to move."

The SEBI chairperson articulated that we live in a time where the current generation demands instant delivery of services. It’s with that in mind Buch believes that crypto is a threat to traditional financial markets. She stated:

"Everybody wants instant everything. Right? So why should anyone believe that tomorrow if an alternative is available with instant settlement tokenization and they say the regulated market doesn’t offer it, you should expect people to move.”

With a focus on meeting investor expectations for instant transactions, SEBI aims to bridge the gap between traditional capital markets and the rapidly evolving crypto landscape.

Faster settlement cycles

India has been at the forefront of adopting faster settlement cycles, having transitioned to a one-day settlement (T+1) model between 2021 and January 2023. The optional same-day settlement, scheduled to commence later this month, represents another step towards enhancing market efficiency. However, Buch cautioned that further delays in embracing instant settlement could lead to a significant portion of the market shifting towards cryptocurrencies.

The move towards faster settlement has been met with enthusiasm from some market participants. Indian business news publication Mint reported the comments of Shauryam Gupta, CEO of web trading platform Rupeezy, on the subject. Gupta stated:

“The shift to instantaneous settlement is a substantial milestone, streamlining operations and cutting down on risk. The potential advantages of reducing counterparty risk and boosting liquidity signal positive growth for the sector.”

However, others, particularly brokers, have expressed reservations. Brokers, who hold client funds and earn interest on balances, stand to see their interest earnings decrease with shorter settlement times. Nonetheless, SEBI remains steadfast in its commitment to modernizing India's capital markets to remain globally competitive.

The regulatory landscape surrounding cryptocurrencies in India has been predominantly shaped by the nation's finance ministry and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). While the RBI has been vocal in its opposition to cryptocurrencies, advocating for central bank digital currencies instead, SEBI's recent initiatives underscore its willingness to adapt to changing market dynamics.

SEBI's efforts reflect a broader trend of regulatory bodies worldwide seeking to strike a balance between innovation and investor protection in an increasingly digital financial landscape.

In addition, the firm has followed up on March 4 with the publication of financial results for Q4 2023.Photo by Thought Catalog on UnsplashSealminer A1The company revealed on X that its inaugural crypto mining chip, known as the SEAL01, destined to drive the Sealminer A1 mining rig, was engineered utilizing four-nanometer process technology, a feat achieved in collaboration with a semiconductor fabricator. Bitdeer boasts that this chip exhibits a power efficiency ratio of 18.1 J/TH. At the heart of Bitdeer's latest achievement lies the SEAL01 chip, the culmination of years of dedicated research and development. By harnessing state-of-the-art technology and meticulous planning, Bitdeer aims to tackle the pressing challenges confronting Bitcoin miners, including skyrocketing operational costs and environmental implications. The company claims that the efficiency of the SEAL01 chip not only promises a shift towards more sustainable mining practices but also holds the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption, thereby bolstering profitability and return on investment for miners. "This powerful chip offers enhanced Bitcoin mining performance with minimized power consumption, leading to lower operating costs and a reduced environmental footprint for miners," Bitdeer affirmed in the X post. The firm stopped short of disclosing the launch timeline for its upcoming mining rig. On the financial front, Bitdeer disclosed its financial results for Q4 2023, on March 4. The company reported a total of 111,966,634 outstanding ordinary shares as of Dec. 31, 2023, including class A and class V ordinary shares. Additionally, Bitdeer revealed key operational metrics for Q4 2023, including total Bitcoin mined, power usage across its mining data centers, average cost of electricity and miner efficiency. Bitdeer's shares closed up 2.11% at $6.76 on Nasdaq on Friday, indicating a positive market response to its recent newly developed Bitcoin mining chip. However, trading outside regular hours, going into March 4, have seen the share price peak at $7.52, yet having retraced to $6.9 at the time of writing. That may indicate that investors are not particularly enthralled by the firm’s Q4 2023 results. Bitdeer emphasizes that the SEAL01 chip is engineered to meet the evolving demands of the cryptocurrency mining industry. As mining activities continue to gain traction and market dynamics evolve, the adaptability of hardware solutions becomes paramount. Bitdeer's strategic emphasis on innovation with the SEAL01 chip aims to pave the way for future advancements in cryptocurrency mining technology, ultimately fostering the growth and sustainability of the industry. Moreover, Bitdeer asserts that the newly developed chip enables it to optimize efficiency, stability and performance in anticipation of the upcoming Bitcoin halving event slated for April. Last month, the company’s founder Jihan Wu was installed as CEO, in a move that is understood to better position the company as it transitions to a growth phase.

Five Foreigners Detained in Thai Crypto Scam Crackdown

Five Foreigners Detained in Thai Crypto Scam CrackdownAgainst a background that continues to see the crypto sector plagued by fraud, Thai authorities have taken decisive action by detaining five foreign nationals accused of orchestrating a multi-million dollar crypto scam.Photo by Dan Freeman on UnsplashA $76 million griftThe scam was clever in that it targeted the aspirations of over 3,200 victims, promising them substantial returns through fraudulent investments in gold and cryptos like Tether (USDT). In its wake, the scheme has left countless investors devastated, with some resorting to drastic measures like securing second mortgages on their homes.According to a report on Monday by The Bangkok Post, an English-language publication in Thailand, Thailand’s Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) told the publication on Sunday that it had initiated an extensive investigation into BCH Global Limited, the company at the heart of the scam. The individuals responsible for perpetrating the alleged fraud are four Chinese nationals and one Laotian citizen. They now face a litany of charges including fraud, transnational crime, money laundering, and the falsification of computer documents. The scammers ingeniously enticed their victims with alluring promises of remarkable returns through their crypto investment platform, bchgloballtd.com.International cooperationThailand’s efforts to bring these culprits to justice did not take place in isolation. The Thai authorities forged partnerships with international law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security in the United States, which aided the Thai authorities greatly in their investigations. The collective effort ultimately culminated in the arrest of the five suspects and the seizure of properties valued at 585 million baht ($16.5 million) by Thailand’s Anti-Money Laundering Office.Part of a broader problemWhile this particular crypto scam is significant, it is far from an isolated incident within Thailand. It adds to the growing concerns of Thai officials who are becoming increasingly exasperated with the prevalence of cryptocurrency scams within their borders.Thai authorities have even issued a stern warning to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, cautioning that failure to address the issue of deceptive advertisements on its platform may lead to expulsion. The government contends that over 5,300 fraudulent ads on Facebook have victimized more than 200,000 Thai citizens. The overarching Asian region in general appears to be harder hit when it comes to crypto-related scams. In August, a $120 million crypto ponzi scheme was exposed in India. Last month the South Korean Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) issued a press release warning investors to be mindful of fraudulent crypto investment schemes. The very same month, Singaporean authorities uncovered a $1.3 million crypto mining scam. The apprehension of the five suspects responsible for the $76 million crypto scam underscores the pressing need for more stringent regulations and heightened vigilance within the crypto space. Such measures are required if innocent investors are to be protected from falling victim to similar scams in the future.
