Web3 & Enterprise·August 08, 2024, 3:38 AM

Mox, a virtual bank in Hong Kong and a subsidiary of Standard Chartered, has introduced exchange-traded fund (ETF) trading for cryptocurrencies, marking a significant expansion into the digital asset space. The bank announced on Aug. 7 that it now offers its customers the ability to trade spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs directly on its platform, making it the first virtual bank to do so.

Expanding crypto offerings

The digital bank is also planning to broaden its cryptocurrency services. Future expansions may include direct purchasing and trading of cryptocurrencies in partnership with a licensed exchange. This move aligns with Hong Kong’s regulatory framework, which has been adjusting to accommodate and regulate crypto activities more robustly.

Competitive pricing and user engagement

Mox is promoting itself as an economical choice for crypto ETF trading, with fees set at 0.12% of the transaction volume, with a minimum charge of 30 Hong Kong dollars ($3.85) for Hong Kong-listed spot and derivatives ETFs and $0.01 per share with a minimum of $5 for U.S.-listed derivatives ETFs.

As of now, a local report reveals that 28% of Mox's customers engage in cryptocurrency investments, with 18% actively trading. The introduction of these ETFs is seen as a move to empower these customers to access emerging asset classes securely.

Future aspirations

Barbaros Uygun, the CEO of Mox, expressed that the inclusion of crypto ETFs is part of the bank's broader strategy to set a global benchmark from Hong Kong. The bank aims to stay competitive by innovating and adapting to market changes. Jayant Bhatia, the bank’s chief product officer, hinted at more extensive plans in the crypto investment realm, although specifics on the timeline for launching broader crypto trading services were not disclosed.

Despite the launch, the overall uptake of crypto ETFs in Hong Kong has been lukewarm. Bosera HashKey, ChinaAMC and Harvest Global, the issuers of the three spot ETFs in Hong Kong, have seen minimal activity with combined assets under management totaling just $236.3 million.

The launch by Mox could potentially invigorate the market for crypto ETFs in Hong Kong as the region strives to become a leading hub for cryptocurrency in Asia.

Growing Concerns about Single Crypto Exchange Listings in Korea

Growing Concerns about Single Crypto Exchange Listings in KoreaAccording to Yonhap Infomax, there is increasing concern about single crypto exchange listings in the Korean market, following the recent arrest of two former Coinone employees.©Pexels/RODNAE ProductionsCrypto listing briberyThe individuals were detained by the Seoul prosecution for allegedly accepting about 3 billion KRW (equivalent to over $2.2 million) in bribes to list a certain cryptocurrency on the exchange.Prosecutors are investigating if these suspects were also involved in the listing of the Puriever token, which is reportedly connected to the kidnapping and murder of a woman in her forties in Gangnam, Seoul.Single exchange-listed cryptosA recent report by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) revealed that 389 cryptocurrencies were listed on a single Korean exchange in the second half of last year, a decrease from the previous year’s 403. Despite the decrease, the trend of single exchange listings continued. Exchanges often exclusively list specific cryptocurrencies to gain a competitive edge, as investors typically prefer larger exchanges with greater liquidity. However, these cryptocurrencies may lack proper review and management and are often highly volatile. The FSC report showed that 34% of cryptocurrencies listed on a single exchange had a market cap of less than 100 million KRW (~$76,000). The Financial Intelligence Unit also warned investors about price fluctuations and liquidity shortages.High volatile cryptocurrencies are attractive to exchanges, as they can lead to increased transaction fee profits.Transparent listingTo address this issue, experts advocate for a transparent listing process. One lawyer in the crypto industry noted that there is a global trend of regulating cryptocurrencies as securities, and if relevant bills pass in Korea, their issuance and disclosure will be regulated. Clear guidelines on disclosures could resolve the issues of single crypto exchange listings, the legal advisor added.Another industry insider has called for investor caution, stressing the need to consider the potential delisting of these crypto assets.

CityLabs Secures 8.55% Stake in Gopax

CityLabs Secures 8.55% Stake in GopaxCityLabs, a company listed on the KOSDAQ stock exchange, has stepped in as a rescue investor for the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Gopax. The company announced last Friday that it has acquired a total of 76,308 shares of Streami, the operator of Gopax, securing an 8.55% stake in the company. The investment amounts to a total value of KRW 5.4 billion (approximately $4 million).Photo by Precondo CA on UnsplashGopax’s turbulent historyGopax has recently been facing public and regulatory scrutiny due to its internal struggles, such as undergoing major changes in leadership earlier this year following its acquisition by Binance, with Lee Jun-haeng resigning and Binance’s Asia Pacific Head, Leon Sing Foong, taking over. After this event, Streami submitted reports to the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under the Financial Services Commission (FSS) in line with requirements to inform the regulatory body about such changes. However, due to delays in the FIU’s approval process likely influenced by Binance’s various legal and regulatory challenges, there was yet another leadership transition — Foong stepped down, and Lee Joong-hoon, Gopax’s former Vice President, took over. Notably, Foong recently left Binance altogether amid regulatory crackdowns.During this process, Gopax also struggled to make principal and interest payments on its own decentralized finance (DeFi) service, GOFi, in the wake of last year’s FTX collapse. The amount of customer funds locked in GOFi totals KRW 56.6 billion, according to an announcement made by Gopax in April. Binance acquired a stake in Gopax on the condition that it would inject enough capital into Gopax to repay this amount in full.CityLabs steps inAs a result, there have been speculations that a Korean company would invest in Gopax and deliver the exchange from its woes. Some even predicted that this company might become a major shareholder, although CityLabs has acquired only an 8.55% stake due to the fact that the funds required to do so far exceed CityLabs’ annual revenue.Last year, CityLabs reported a consolidated revenue of KRW 28.4 billion and an operating loss of KRW 6.1 billion. Although its revenue increased by 2% compared to the previous year, operating losses grew by 46.9%. While the company may not have sufficient funds at present to become a major shareholder, there lies the possibility that it may increase its stake in the future. The acquisition seems to be driven by CityLabs’ interest in blockchain businesses and the crypto market. While it currently specializes in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), it was formerly Dayli Blockchain, which was affiliated with the crypto exchange Coinone and Dayli Financial Group (now known as Gowid). In 2017, Yellow Mobile became the largest shareholder of Dayli Financial, and in February 2018, it became the largest shareholder of DailyBlockchain, making Dayli Blockchain its subsidiary. Coinone was also a subsidiary of Yellow Mobile at the time. All of these ownership relations have now been restructured.CityLabs has thus been involved in the blockchain industry for some time now with previous connections to cryptocurrency exchanges while also offering decentralized identity (DID) and blockchain as a service (BaaS) products. Observations point to the possibility that its history has influenced its decision to invest in Gopax.“We acquired shares to secure an entry point into the crypto market and position ourselves as a major player,” the company said in a statement.Meanwhile, financial authorities are considering plans to examine the eligibility of major shareholders when reviewing applications from crypto businesses.

Zetrix launches product to simplify KYC for Chinese nationals

Zetrix, a layer-1 blockchain project for real-world applications, has launched an electronic Know Your Customer (KYC) verification product for Chinese nationals. The Malaysian enterprise, which is a subsidiary of digital services company My E.G. Services Berhad (MYEG), has launched ZCert. The offering is available to Chinese nationals who opt to have their digital identities published to the Xinghuo BF network, a Chinese national blockchain infrastructure network developed under the guidance of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and managed by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.Photo by Diego Jimenez on UnsplashFirst-of-its-kind applicationZetrix acts as an international super-node relative to the Xinghuo blockchain. In a press release published by PR Newswire on Oct. 3, the company outlined that ZCert had been launched as a first-of-its-kind application, enabling Chinese nationals “to be authenticated and verified digitally overseas, paving the way for a seamless, efficient, and secure verification process for verifiers and identity holders. ” The service simplifies the issue of identity verification for verifiers located outside of China, as a consequence of Zetrix’s integration with the Xinghuo BIF network.  Connecting to ‘China Web3’Xinghuo signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Zetrix’s parent company, MYEG, to establish the international super-node back in November 2022. The tie-up was seen as an opportunity to provide access to Chinese government agencies and businesses internationally.  At the time, MYEG Managing Director and Zetrix Co-Founder Wong Thean Soon said that “with the commencement of the Xinghuo International Supernode, the rest of the world can connect and be part of the China Web 3 evolution that will promote the establishment of international communities and facilitate global trade and finance.”  On this occasion, Wong said that the new product “enables a new wave of services powered by smart contracts.” He added that KYC processes can be simplified and automated, while “user data is retained by users at all times and only critical information is shared in an encrypted manner." The company has already digitized Chinese driving licenses for the purpose of overseas verification. Furthermore, it has plans to expand its offering beyond ID verification soon. In April of this year, Zetrix and MYEG signed an MOU with MaiCapital, a Hong Kong-based virtual assets manager, with a view towards collaborating on the launch of a digital asset fund or digital asset-based exchange-traded fund (ETF). Last year Zetrix engaged in a pilot project with the Bank of China with the aim of offering supply chain financing products. On a similar theme, its parent company entered into a partnership with the Philippines Bureau of Customs (BOC) and Cargo Data Exchange Center Inc. (CDEC), also in 2023. The collaboration involved the use of Zetrix’s ZTrade product, a Web3 platform that enables digitized trade document verification. Zetrix launched its ZETRIX token in October 2023 through an initial exchange offering (IEO) facilitated by the Coinstore exchange.
