OKX mulls U.S. IPO

Web3 & Enterprise·June 24, 2025, 7:05 AM

OKX, a global crypto exchange, is understood to be considering carrying out an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States.

That’s according to a report published by The Information on June 22. The development indicates changing fortunes for the firm in North America. In February, the company agreed to pay a fine of $84 million and surrender revenues earned through U.S. customers of around $420 million to the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ).

‘New era for OKX’

The DoJ had taken action against the crypto exchange on the basis of allegations of unlicensed money transfers. Having put this matter behind it and in taking advantage of a more positive regulatory approach to the crypto sector in the U.S. by the Trump administration, in April OKX relaunched its service offering in the U.S. The company described the newly launched service as a “new era for OKX in the U.S.”

Another consequence of that positive regulatory approach in the U.S. has been a renewed interest from crypto companies in pursuing IPOs. Yueqi Yang, a reporter with The Information, stated on X:

“From IPOs to crypto treasury stocks, crypto is booming right now, but the rally is playing out in the stock market, at valuations that even surprised industry insiders.”

USDC stablecoin issuer Circle (CRCL) executed its IPO on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on June 5. Circle’s experience is likely to be encouraging for other crypto firms considering going public. Since going public, the company’s stock has surged by more than 675%. Circle raised in excess of $1 billion with an IPO share price of $31. During Monday’s trading, the company’s market cap exceeded that of Coinbase (COIN).

The current market environment has encouraged other crypto firms to follow suit. In March, American crypto exchange platform Gemini filed confidentially for an IPO. Bullish has also taken this option, according to reports earlier this month. Kraken, another global crypto exchange platform, has indicated that it intends to pursue an IPO in Q1 2026.

OKB token holder fears

News of OKX’s intentions to go public has led to crypto community discussions surrounding the use of an exchange token as a means of fundraising versus a traditional stock market listing. OKX launched OKB, its native token, in March 2018.

Commentators have pointed out that those who invest in traditional shares will have access to more liquid markets whereas platform token liquidity is oftentimes concentrated on that specific exchange. Some OKB token holders fear that following the IPO, their token will be sidelined or abandoned.

OKX has been working towards expanding across various regional markets recently. Last year it launched OKX TR to cater towards the crypto community in Turkey. It also acquired trading licenses in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

It emerged last week that the company had launched its services in Germany and Poland having acquired regulatory approval in both countries.

OKX was first founded in Beijing in 2013, later moving its headquarters to the Seychelles due to regulatory changes in China.

OKX Entering Indian Market With a Focus on Web3

OKX Entering Indian Market With a Focus on Web3Cryptocurrency exchange OKX is gearing up to make its presence felt in the Indian market.Local recruitmentThat’s according to a discussion between a company executive and CoinDesk, as explained by the publication in a report published on Friday. The firm plans on recruiting local employees in its endeavor to conquer the market within the world’s most populous nation.OKX intends to rely on local employees who will spearhead its initiatives in the country. Haider Rafique, Chief Marketing Officer at OKX explained:“We’re trying to identify who’s who in the zoo and what is their contribution. There’s a large developer community. How do we help them? Build a relationship with them.”He believes that adopting a community-centric approach will pave the way for a successful entry into the local market. Rafique emphasized:“We’re going to learn about the community. We’re going to work with local folks — figure out where we can add value.”Photo by Naveed Ahmed on UnsplashFocusing on Web3 applicationsThe company also intends to take on the challenge by placing emphasis on the use of Web3 applications. Rafique revealed the company’s ambitious plans to scale up its wallet services “exponentially” by engaging with India’s developer community. Currently, there are approximately 200,000 OKX Wallet users in India, accounting for just 5% of the country’s Web3 user base.In a recent collaboration, OKX partnered with the blockchain platform Neo for an APAC Hackathon held in Bengaluru, a city in southern India. Rafique described this move as a strategic test to validate assumptions, understand the local culture, and support the burgeoning Web3 ecosystem. The global exchange already has a physical presence in world centers such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, and the Bahamas.Indian crypto environmentTrading cryptocurrencies is currently legal in India, albeit with no established regulatory framework by a central authority. Ironically India has been very active in working towards the establishment of global regulatory standards relative to crypto while coming in for criticism from its Supreme Court recently for the government’s failure to provide regulatory clarity at home.Cryptocurrencies are used and traded at the investor’s risk in India and do not hold legal tender status for banking purposes. Additionally, a 30% tax is imposed on cryptocurrency transactions in the country.Rafique believes that Indian regulators are gradually distinguishing Web3 from centralized finance (CeFi). He remarked: “They’re more concerned about venues that have fiat on-ramps, which we do but don’t offer it in India.” He expressed a readiness for the company to become a front-runner once India establishes a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. It’s interesting to note that while OKX embarks on expanding its footprint within the Indian market, Indian crypto market incumbents have been looking to downsize. Indian cryptocurrency exchanges like CoinSwitch and CoinDCX have faced layoffs amid the current market downturn.Notwithstanding current market conditions, it’s likely that OKX is taking a long-term view and positioning itself for future success in what should be a very important crypto asset marketplace in the future.Ryan Selkis, CEO and Founder of crypto market intelligence firm Messari expressed this view, stating: “I love to see companies like OKX expanding in India. The largest democracy in the world should be a haven for crypto innovation in the years to come.”

Woo X launches tokenized T-Bills for retail investors

Taipei-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange Woo X has announced the launch of tokenized United States Treasury Bills (T-Bills), marking a significant milestone for the crypto-sector retail investment landscape. In a press release, the company outlined that it has partnered with London-based institutional tokenization platform OpenTrade in order to bring its Earn Vaults product backed by real-world assets (RWAs) to market. The product is being heralded as the first protocol offering tokenized T-Bills accessible to retail investors.Photo by Jorge Salvador on UnsplashStable yield accessWilly Chuang, Chief Operating Officer of Woo X, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, highlighting its potential to bridge the gap between conventional financial securities and the cryptocurrency market. He told CoinDesk in an email that “for the first time, retail users on a centralized exchange can instantly access an interest-bearing account backed by U.S. Treasury Bills.” With RWA Earn Vaults, Woo X users now have access to stable, predictable yields on their USDC holdings, backed by U.S. Treasury Bills, without encountering additional complexities. These yield-bearing products offer attractive annual percentage rates (APR) ranging from 4.5% to 4.7% for USDC holders. Subscriptions accrue real yields, fully backed by U.S. Treasury Bills, with current annual percentage rates (APRs) for seven-day and 28-day terms standing at approximately 4.5% and 4.75%, respectively. OpenTrade is a tokenization platform supported by Circle, the issuer of the world's second-largest stablecoin, USDC, lending further credibility to the partnership, with USDC boasting a market cap of $34 billion. OpenTrade had established links with Centre, the now-dissolved collaboration between Circle and Coinbase, and the Marco Polo enterprise blockchain project. Interest in RWA tokenizationRecent institutional interest in the RWA tokenization sector is exemplified by BlackRock's launch of the USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, valued at over $298 million. This development underscores the increasing recognition of digital assets as viable investment instruments by traditional financial giants. Additionally, a recent report by CoinGecko highlighted the profitability of tokenized RWAs in the crypto space, positioning it as the second most lucrative narrative in the first quarter of 2024. Lim Yu Qian, an analyst at CoinGecko, noted the substantial profitability of the RWA narrative compared to other sectors, emphasizing its growing prominence.Franklin Templeton's Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund (FOBXX) has emerged as a notable treasury tokenization fund, reflecting the sector's maturation and investor confidence.  Woo X's product offerings extend beyond tokenized T-Bills, encompassing index-linked perpetuals covering crypto meme coins and layer-2 tokens in collaboration with market maker Wintermute. The exchange's native token, WOO, plays a pivotal role in governance and incentivization, offering users the opportunity to stake WOO and earn an average APR of 12.66%. The recent robust performance of WOO, experiencing a price surge of about 30% since its April 13 low, has served to boost the platform further. Tokenization of U.S. T-Bills has witnessed significant growth, with over $1.15 billion worth of assets tokenized through various products by April 2022, highlighting the growing appeal of digital asset-based offerings in the financial sector. This latest product offering benefits retail market participants, giving them increased access to diverse and lucrative investment opportunities in the burgeoning digital asset space.
