Hong Kong's Mox Bank launches crypto ETF trading

Web3 & Enterprise·August 08, 2024, 3:38 AM

Mox, a virtual bank in Hong Kong and a subsidiary of Standard Chartered, has introduced exchange-traded fund (ETF) trading for cryptocurrencies, marking a significant expansion into the digital asset space. The bank announced on Aug. 7 that it now offers its customers the ability to trade spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs directly on its platform, making it the first virtual bank to do so.

Expanding crypto offerings

The digital bank is also planning to broaden its cryptocurrency services. Future expansions may include direct purchasing and trading of cryptocurrencies in partnership with a licensed exchange. This move aligns with Hong Kong’s regulatory framework, which has been adjusting to accommodate and regulate crypto activities more robustly.

Competitive pricing and user engagement

Mox is promoting itself as an economical choice for crypto ETF trading, with fees set at 0.12% of the transaction volume, with a minimum charge of 30 Hong Kong dollars ($3.85) for Hong Kong-listed spot and derivatives ETFs and $0.01 per share with a minimum of $5 for U.S.-listed derivatives ETFs.

As of now, a local report reveals that 28% of Mox's customers engage in cryptocurrency investments, with 18% actively trading. The introduction of these ETFs is seen as a move to empower these customers to access emerging asset classes securely.

Future aspirations

Barbaros Uygun, the CEO of Mox, expressed that the inclusion of crypto ETFs is part of the bank's broader strategy to set a global benchmark from Hong Kong. The bank aims to stay competitive by innovating and adapting to market changes. Jayant Bhatia, the bank’s chief product officer, hinted at more extensive plans in the crypto investment realm, although specifics on the timeline for launching broader crypto trading services were not disclosed.

Despite the launch, the overall uptake of crypto ETFs in Hong Kong has been lukewarm. Bosera HashKey, ChinaAMC and Harvest Global, the issuers of the three spot ETFs in Hong Kong, have seen minimal activity with combined assets under management totaling just $236.3 million.

The launch by Mox could potentially invigorate the market for crypto ETFs in Hong Kong as the region strives to become a leading hub for cryptocurrency in Asia.

Crypto and Wall Street leaders set to meet at Abu Dhabi Finance Week next month

Emerging as one of the world’s major crypto hubs, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to host Abu Dhabi Finance Week, described as the region’s largest financial and investment event, in the capital next month. Scheduled to take place from Dec. 8 to 11, the conference will feature leading figures from both traditional finance and the crypto industry. Notable speakers from traditional finance include Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio, Morgan Stanley International CEO Clare Woodman, and Franklin Templeton CEO Jennifer Johnson. Representing the crypto sector will be Binance CEO Richard Teng, Solana Labs CEO Anatoly Yakovenko, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, among others.Photo by Saj Shafique on UnsplashHashed, ADGM host Web3 policy talksAmong the partners for the four-day event is Seoul-based venture capital firm Hashed, which opened its Abu Dhabi office last year. The expansion followed its partnership with Hub71, the city’s global tech ecosystem, which aims to help more Korean startups expand into the Emirates. According to South Korean news outlet News1, Hashed, jointly with Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) Emerging Tech, will host the Web3 Leaders Roundtable. The event will feature two sessions: one exploring next-generation digital infrastructure, where artificial intelligence and blockchain converge with the real economy, and another focusing on digital asset regulations, particularly how policies can be designed to balance innovation with oversight. Bybit courts UAE talentAbu Dhabi’s growing appeal as a hub for digital asset businesses is also underscored by crypto exchange Bybit’s recent participation in the annual NYU Abu Dhabi Career Fair. Concluding on Oct. 30, the event marked the trading platform’s first talent outreach initiative in the UAE. The participation comes after Bybit obtained a full virtual asset platform operator license from the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) last month. The occasion gave Bybit an opportunity to engage with students and recent graduates. The growing adoption of cryptocurrency in the country is reflected in Du’s launch of a crypto mining service aimed at individual users. As one of the UAE’s two major telecom operators, Du is leveraging its nationwide data centers to allow residents to rent the necessary computing power on a subscription basis to mine digital assets, according to a report by the Emirates-based newspaper The National. Du’s cloud platform powers user miningJasim Al Awadi, Du’s chief information and communications technology officer, said the new service is powered by Cloud Miner, a platform introduced last year under the company’s sub-brand Du Tech. He explained that as the service evolves, users will gain access to a calculator that estimates their potential monthly Bitcoin earnings. Du also intends to continue enhancing and expanding its mining-as-a-service offering. The launch coincides with a period of volatility in the crypto market. On Nov. 5, Bitcoin fell below the $100,000 mark for the first time since June 23, dropping to $99,992.01 against USDT on Binance before recovering to above $103,000.

Korea’s crypto exchanges resume charging fees, shifting market shares

Korea’s prominent crypto exchanges Bithumb and Korbit have recently resumed charging trading fees, local media outlet Edaily reported. However, these changes in fee policies are reinforcing Upbit’s dominant market position while downsizing Bithumb’s and Korbit’s market shares. Meanwhile, the local banks affiliated with crypto exchanges are benefitting from an uptick in fee revenue from the recent bitcoin boom. According to crypto data intelligence platform CoinGecko on Feb. 28, Upbit accounted for 77.4% of the local market share in crypto transactions, followed by Bithumb (20.43%), Coinone (1.73%), Korbit (0.35%) and Gopax (0.09%). Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashShifts in market sharesAs of March 2, the market shares of Bithumb and Korbit decreased by 8.59 percentage points and 0.21 percentage points, respectively. Conversely, Upbit’s dominance grew to 86.57%, up by over 9 percentage points. A Korbit official said it’s too early to pass judgment on Korbit’s market performance, as the exchange’s policies on trading fees could change depending on the market sentiment. The person added that CoinGecko tracks only eight types of tokens traded on Korbit and does not cover all the transactions on the exchange.  Bithumb had previously benefited from charging no fees, driving up its market share to as high as over 40% in December. Following the decision to impose a fee of 0.04% on Feb. 6, however, the exchange has been experiencing a drop in transaction volume. Korbit also reinstated trading fees last Thursday, roughly four months after eliminating them on Oct. 10 as a promotional move. However, it's worth mentioning that the newly introduced trading fee is 0.07%, which is lower than the earlier rate of 0.2%. Meanwhile, Gopax currently exempts fees for users who trade BTC, ETH, XRP and USDC.  No local regulations on fees for crypto transactions At the moment, there are no local regulations on fees for crypto transactions, leaving the task of setting such fees to individual trading platforms. It is known that crypto exchanges in other countries, such as the U.S., set their own rates as well.
