The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission imposed $172,000 in sanctions on a former White House staffer who handled publicity for President Donald Trump over insider trading allegations tied to prediction market platform Kalshi, The Block reported. The case marks the CFTC’s second insider trading enforcement action involving a government employee accused of using nonpublic information to trade event-based prediction contracts.
Gabriel Perez, who served as a White House publicity and technology adviser, abused job-related access that allowed Perez to review Trump’s speech drafts about an hour before delivery, according to the report. From December 2025 to February 2026, Perez traded in Kalshi “Mention Market” contracts tied to whether specific words or phrases would appear in the speeches and generated profits. The CFTC ordered disgorgement of $107,539 in illicit gains, imposed a $65,000 civil penalty, and barred Perez from trading at CFTC-registered entities for three years.

The Taliban has effectively banned cryptocurrency trading across Afghanistan and threatened to prosecute traders and related businesses, Bitcoin News reported. More than 20 crypto exchange shops in Herat were shut down and at least 13 traders were arrested.
Monthly crypto inflows then plunged to under $80,000 from a peak of more than $150 million. Bitcoin and stablecoins had served as important tools for savings and remittances after Afghanistan became largely isolated from the international financial system. The Taliban classified digital assets as fraudulent and stressed crypto speculation is akin to gambling under Islamic law.

Dormant BTC activity has fallen to its lowest level since the third quarter of 2022, according to Galaxy Research.
Galaxy Research said long-term holders are overwhelmingly more likely to maintain their positions than sell. From Aug. 16 to 26, only 553 BTC moved from six old wallets, which Galaxy Research described as an exceptional case rather than a typical pattern. The firm added that when older coins do not move, they do not flow to exchanges, do not create selling pressure, and do not test market liquidity. With BTC testing $81,000 amid momentum from U.S. government Treasury purchases, Galaxy Research said the trend supports further upside rather than downside. The current structural outlook remains positive, it added, as lower circulating supply pressure reduces resistance to price gains.

The funding for the developers was traced to KuCoin. GoPlus added that the same group also issued Trump Digital Platinum (PLATINUM), a token containing malicious code capable of draining holders’ balances.

Zhuoer Jiang, founder of mining pool BTC.top and an early figure in China’s crypto industry, said he sold half of his spot Ethereum holdings.
Jiang said Bitcoin spot ETFs posted $202 million in net outflows on Friday after nine straight days of inflows, signaling short-term profit-taking and weaker buying demand. Ethereum spot ETFs, meanwhile, maintained $102 million in net inflows, indicating stronger relative demand than Bitcoin. Jiang added that a hawkish stance from Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole had a major impact, and said Bitcoin is now facing its first test since the rally began. The overnight drop could mark the start of a downtrend, he said, adding that he would watch developments over the weekend.

European Central Bank Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel said central bank money, which is issued and managed by central banks, should be moved onto blockchain networks, according to Bloomberg.
Speaking at the Jackson Hole conference on Aug. 28, Schnabel said the shift is aimed at revamping how monetary policy is implemented. Schnabel added that using on-chain systems would allow central bank money to retain its role as the foundation for settlement while making use of distributed ledger programmability, including the ability for funds to move automatically when preset conditions are met.

A mismatch emerged at South Korean crypto exchange Korbit between customer-deposited coins and the amount the exchange actually holds, News1 reported.
The affected token was Harmony (ONE), which recently suffered a security incident and is traded among South Korean won-based exchanges only on Korbit. Customers had deposited 4,706,076 ONE with Korbit, while the exchange holds 4,491,789 ONE, leaving a shortfall of about 210,000 tokens. The gap is worth roughly 214,200 won, and Korbit plans to cover the shortfall with its own funds. Still, as the only South Korean won-based exchange to list and support trading in Harmony, Korbit is also facing criticism that it cannot easily avoid responsibility for listing and post-listing oversight.

CoinShares CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti warned investors to be cautious about cryptocurrencies with no real use cases, saying even such tokens are rising as the broader crypto market rebounds sharply.
According to CoinPost, Mognetti said investor sentiment had been at one of its lowest levels in recent years until just a month ago. More than 100 crypto projects have shut down or disappeared from the market this year, he said, adding those projects did not fail simply because of macroeconomic conditions. Rather, the main reasons were depleted funding, security problems, and a failure to create sufficient utility, revenue, or economic value. While the broader crypto market has recently been trending higher, that does not mean the fundamentals of every asset have improved, he said. Many are climbing simply as risk appetite returns. Rather than asking whether the market is back, investors should examine which assets can retain value when liquidity, political conditions, and investor sentiment no longer support price gains, Mognetti added, according to CoinPost.

Stablecoins are unlikely to be reliable enough for large-scale payment and settlement use, Bank for International Settlements General Manager Pablo Hernandez de Cos said at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, according to Reuters.
Hernandez de Cos said stablecoins and tokenized deposits can coexist, but tokenized deposits should handle everyday payments while stablecoins should be limited to specialized uses. He added stablecoins could help boost demand for U.S. Treasuries and lower government borrowing costs, but a shift from bank deposits into stablecoins could raise banks’ funding costs and increase lending rates for retail customers.
The BIS has consistently expressed a negative view on stablecoins.
